    I'm a game ranger here in South Africa. We have these Lil guys all around camp. Your substrate is perfect. They live in a sand forest so it's not always wet but they do enjoy the humidity. Try keep humidity above 75%. But don't be afraid to throw in some more foliage they not much for views. Also try keep everything flat 🎉

      @tarantulakat these guys come from a really harsh environment so don't worry to much they not going to roll over and die at the slightest issue. As long as the humidty is fine you shouldn't have a issue, if there's low humidity for a day or 2 it's the not the end of the world. Just keep the Temps up 🙌🏻

    • @Kuamata
      @Kuamata 3 месяца назад +7

      @@tarantulakat I'd second trying to go bioactive with some springtails. That way you don't have to disturb them much. These frogs give live birth in their burrows, so if you happen to have a female and they breed, disrupting the soil is going to make birthing difficult and they may reabsorb their offspring instead. Having a clean up crew will ensure the soil doesn't foul while they're doing their thing. Also, after extensive research, as mentioned by Liam, they are an African species so they're no stranger to warmth. Maybe a back panel or overhead panel would help further replicate the conditions they're used to, but absolutely do not use a UTH. Burrowing to cooler ground is how they thermoregulate, and heating the ground would make that difficult.

      They are so incredibly cute but I find it really problematic that they are all wild caught and specially if they are suddenly becoming a viral reptile lots of people want, that we don't even fully know how to care for them. I'm worried how it could affect the species in the wild.

    I adore rain frogs. But I personally can’t get behind owning them right now considering the fact they’ve not been captive bred yet and they’re being captured in massive quantities because of the trend. In Asia they’ve been around as pets for a little while but they are all still wild caught and imported.
    Always buy captive bred, especially for sensitive animals like amphibians.

    • @jdssurf
      @jdssurf 2 месяца назад +5

      You can't captive breed if you can't get the wild animals to start it, just like every other species. Yes they shouldn't be wiping so many from the wild, but you need to think about the big picture. They should make some rules, but you can't say always only buy captive bred.

    • @Fr0gl3t
      @Fr0gl3t 2 месяца назад

      @@jdssurf animals are usually brought into captivity via zoos collecting them from the wild and focusing captive breeding them. Many reptiles we have today were initially caught by zoos in the beginning, bred by them then later released to the public as pets.
      You are not helping this species by owning them as pets and not even attempting to breed them. It should be those that are attempting to breed them for captivity that should only have species that are new to the hobby otherwise the people that just get them as pets are selfishly contributing to population decreases and those caught animals needlessly dying.

    • @liddytheweeb
      @liddytheweeb Месяц назад

      Unless it’s negatively effecting the natural population and they’re being humane I’m not worried. Not every wild caught animal is a poaching horror story, some of them are just little dudes caught with the intent to start captive breeding so we don’t have to rely on wild caught. That’s how you start captive bred populations in the first place.

    😢 I miss living in Puerto Rico. I lived in the country, so we were basically surrounded by natures animals all around. In Puerto Rico there's a distinctive kind of frog called "Coqui" it's pronounced ko-key that lives only in Puerto Rico. People have tried taking them out of the country, and they die within days. No one has the info as like that little animal (which is amazingly adorable) leaves the country and it dies. If you ever go to Puerto Rico and it rains while your there, omg you are going to hear them all over, everywhere. And the sound they make is like their name , coqui coqui coqui. Just fyi.

      They have taken over the Big Island of Hawaii too. Since they are an invasive species, it's causing issues with the native species. But I agree, since I live on a different island in Hawaii, that it is soothing short term. They can be incredibly loud in large numbers, though, so the residents there do complain since they are growing in large numbers without natural predators.

      Thank you! They are desert rain frogs, so they actually stay underground when it’s dry and come out when it rains. I was recently in QLD Australia and it had been raining for a few days and one night I went outside and heard the most beautiful soft gentle chorus. I called my friend out and asked what was so sweetly chorusing. She said it was tree frogs. There was no croaking and they were all synchronised going up and down the scales like some sort of heavenly sound. I sat there listening for an hour it was so sweet. It was almost like purring. If I never experience that again I will consider myself blessed to have heard it just once.

      Every species of animal we have in the hobby was originally wild caught. How are we supposed to get captive breeding going without it? Furthermore, I would suggest checking out this article. It’s more about wild tarantulas, but it backs up that the hobby is not what’s destroying the wild populations.
      “We conclude that any potential correlation between the popularity of certain tarantula genera in the pet keeping hobby and the level of endangerment in their natural habitat is mostly coincidental and not causative, particularly given that many tarantulas in the pet keeping hobby are regularly bred in captivity. Most notably, there are other major threats such as the highly unsustainable collection of tarantulas for food products in Cambodia (Yen & Ro, 2013), the collection as tourist souvenirs in Malaysia (Smith, 2011) and the ongoing habitat destruction globally (Branco & Cardoso, 2020)”

      @@tarantulakatYou are correct about needing to do wild caught to get breeding going. However it does indeed cause issues as we rake so many reptiles and such from the wild, we throw off a balance, we can't just go off a few tarantula articles. I've known over the years enough people who traveled regularly for importing fish and reptiles, and they eventualy switched things up because they saw the species diminishing, we do need to be careful, like I said in my other post, I wish you the best in getting them to breed, I know you love and care for your animals.

    Hello! Thank you for sharing!
    Just some advice (coming from an experienced reptile/amphibian keeper) for everyone out there whos interested in buying:
    If you are buying wild caught animals and you are not a seasoned exotic pet breeder- try not to buy them until they are well established in the hobby OR you can buy one that is captive bred and born. Wild caught animals do not thrive most of the time. ALSO- please set up your enclosure BEFORE the animals come into your care. Have the environment and heating/temperatures established before introducing the animal!
    Thanks for reading!

    FYI I have heard (don't know if it's true but wanted to mention it to you), that that the clay they make those flower pots out of contains something toxic that can leach into the water. Like I said I have zero experience with any frogs or toads but just wanted to mention it to you just in case. They are adorable.

      I wonder if it's a regional thing where the clay is harvested 🤔 but absolutely something to look into especially since amphibians are so sensitive to any chemicals, which A+ Kat for wearing gloves!
      I wonder if she bought a shallow pot that has been glazed would be better? Maybe do something food safe from the market? Always good to be aware though.

      @@houndgirl7365 I think the glazing that makes it like ceramic would be fine, we can use that for food items, as well as glass. It's just that raw textured stuff that I would steer clear of. I can't recall what it was but I was going to use the dish like her for something and was warned about that from someone.

    Please, let's not buy them until they're captive-bred! We can wait!😂❤

    Problem is that most people don’t realize you won’t see them a majority of the time. Will essentially an empty box if keeping them properly.

    Rain frogs are soooo cute, I love that they walk rather than hop.

    So darn cute! I hope they do well in your care. I’m already attached and they aren’t even my pets. 😂

    They're so cute!! I hope people successfully breed them so they can stop wild catching them 🙂 Imagine their reunion with the third one? "Heyyyy, welcome to the party! This is our crib" hahaha.
