    Hi Mary! Just noticed that bench behind you. We have an almost identical one that I applied Linseed Oil to and it really looked nice on our deck. My base layer is a tight fitting Under Armour wicking t-shirt. Next layer is a long sleeve wicking hiking shirt. Next is my fleece hoodie and finally my Enlightened Equipment (EE) Torrid APEX synthetic jacket. I never get cold in them but if I get wet, it can be an issue but the jacket still provides warmth. Then of course an EE Visp rain jacket with underarm zippers. I also use a hiking umbrella when it's down pouring rain. For my neck I have super light Zpacks buff and for a spare, a Merino Wool buff. I have a Merino wool beanie as well for sleeping. I use a pair of Merino wool gloves and if really cold, I wear a pair of Goretex mittens over them. I have a pair of sport polarized transition lens glasses. I'm taking sport so they last through the falls, trials and tribulations of the Appalachian Trail in 2021. For rain pants, I'm using the EE wind pants and I also have a rain skirt if needed. All are ultralight. For socks, I am using Injinji socks first with Merino Wool Compression socks over those. Excellent video. John from MI

    Some of you watching this may not know of Mary's qualifications for this video but I can assure you she knows what she's talking about she's been there. About a year ago she did the PCT approximately 2,600-ish miles which about three quarters of it was deep cold lots of snow and just some wicked weather. The kind that's fun to play in but then you run home take a hot shower and break out the hot cocoa 😳😊.
    One other piece of information that I will share, is, in heavy cold and snowy climates no matter what you're layering, do not exert so much energy that you sweat too much. Pace yourself, be moderate, keep your sweat to a minimum. When you're living outdoors for four to
    six months it's kind of hard to dry your first and second layers out while in a tent in the snow in the middle of winter. 😲😵
    I think in general you'll just find you have a much more pleasant time outdoors whether you're out for the day a week or more 😀🤗
    Peace to you all and keep on rocking the free world ☺️

      Thank you so much Traky boy 😊 Very true about trying to avoid that extra exertion where possible to stay dry!

    Very informative video Mary. Just curious, how much of this winter gear did you have with you when finishing your PCT hike in Oregon? It seemed pretty cold for you then because of how late in the season it was. Glad to see you hiking at home. Stay safe, keep well, keep on smiling, Don from Eugene, Oregon.

      Thanks so much Donald. I had a lot of it with me in the end! One thing I wish I had were my boots as my trail runners were not appropriate in the snow. My trousers were different as I had lighter ones, I only had the one buff and I also didn't have the mittens - but I did have the other two pairs of gloves.

    Hi Mary, Have you done a what to wear in Summer video. Something that may also contain clothing to gaurd against midges. I live on a fell in the North Pennines. moved here a short while ago. but the midges are a big problem in summer.

    Excellent and very thorough video, Mary. Not telling you anything you don't know, but for other subscribers, in my experience, hypothermia is one of the more common potential injuries people can face outdoors -- and it doesn't even need to be freezing out, particularly if you get wet and/or physically overextended. Wearing the right clothing, and keeping it dry, can be life-saving. Also, it is just as important to stay hydrated in cold weather as it is in the heat. Your body is working overtime to keep the core temperature up, so eating enough calories is also important. Altogether, winter hiking and camping is its own kind of demanding, but good preparation starts with good clothing choices.

    Good tips, Mary. Personally, I have migrated to wool instead of polyester for my base layer. It doesn't hold odor as badly and is somewhat water resistant. I also use a down puffy mainly to save weight. The downside is it takes forever to dry if it gets wet, so I really have to be cautious about wearing a water proof shell at the first sign of precipitation. And yes, no cotton. I made that mistake, once. Never again.

    • @MarysOutdoorAdventures
      @MarysOutdoorAdventures  3 года назад +1

      Thanks so much Tom! Yes that is true about polyester - it does smell bad quicker!

Now I've seen the snow 🎩 Three skins on top of yours, here in winter drinks Ex: Bean broth with a piece of crackling, cassava broth, Hot Mocotó ☕ Eu gosto do caldo de feijão e compro na padaria, tem a canjica (I like the bean broth and buy in the bakery, has the very good canjica with cinnamon) Eh Trem bao so, Festas Juninas tradição Portuguesa kkkkk 😆 There is the event in June, Quadrilhas de Festas Juninas Bye (tchau) Saudações Mineiras. 💡The language Portuguese is beautiful but complex, accentuation for example canção 👉 Song
