American Bandstand. August 25, 1964. Preceded by the Record Review of Johnny Burnette's "A Bigger Man". A nice interview with Irma follows the performance.
I was so lucky to grow up in New Orleans with a steady diet of Miss Irma Thomas all through those years. The New Orleans Queen of Soal and many others. The great news is she is still rocking. (JAZZ FEST NEW ORLEANS)
Mike Gruhn that would be wonderful- make it happen Charlie! Mind you considering how every character who sings it has an unhappy fate would want to spare Irma that!
Considering the newest promo for Black Mirror & Netflix uploaded on Netflix's channel 3 days ago as of writing this comment also featured her beautiful song, sung by Jessica Brown-Findlay, I would be quite surprised if the creators of the show aren't itching to get Irma to appear on a future episode at this point.
Dick Clark was not only a music aficionado and connoisseur but was also a trailblazer. Never cared what you looked like but focused on only "the music". Oh how he loved Music. This video touched my soul and am grateful for the power of music.
My mamma was an alcoholic. She grew up in foster care and drank her sorrows away everynight and played the blues. I grew up on Irma. I now have lived in New Orleans for 30 years. I come home from working in the French quarter late at night and listen to Irma, like tonight. She lives 5 miles away from me and often im tempted to go leave a letter on her door telling her what her music means to me. She is legendary to me. I often wonder how man 50 yr old white men or 50 yr Olds period know every word to her songs. Who is home in bed at 3 a.m. jamming to Irma??? I am.. trust. Shout out to Irma Thomas for a lifetime of good and timeless music.
Music history still relevant in the aughts - It is so wonderful to see this living legend New Orleans soul queen on this great show with her classic 1964 jam. The original mono echoey 7" is wonderfully featured for 2017 ears on Big Little Lies, HBO, with other Irma Thomas tunes - thank you for posting! Cheers, DAVEDJ
It's a trip to see so many on here because of black mirror and the light it shed on this classic. I got lucky years ago when an ex girlfriends mother was playing this song. The chorus and xylophone caught my attention right off the bat. Had it on my music lists for awhile now. Played it at my house party I was hosting for my parents and my mother remembered the song and had forgotten it over the years. Now it's requested a lot by her. Awesome song
I saw it on AB when I was 13. Loved Irma. This was in the same R&B sound in the genre of the he girl singers on 1962-65. Timi Yuro, Sandi Shaw, Cilla Black, Dusty Springfield doing blue-eyed soul. Irma was the real deal. New Orleans girl. Motown signed Brenda Holloway and I thought for sure they would get Irma. It was a glorious time to be a teen.
+FloridaRaider Today's music is not music. It's made by synthesizers, drum machines, and people with no talent. Consumed by tattooed, brainless drug addicts. Pushed on the population by a failing entertainment industry due to slim profits caused by pirates. Real talent got greedy and overpriced their products and caused the demise leading us back to the days of traveling minstrels.
+MactanDotCom that is such a closed minded view of music and you should be ashamed if you truly feel that way. There are still plenty of very talents musicians today - even those that work on "synthesizers and drum machines" as you say. Irma Thomas' era of music was absolutely gorgeous, but so was the 40s, 50s, 70s, 80s, and heck, all music. I suppose not everyone is blessed with the ability to truly love music and appreciate it in all forms.
Beck did a modern cover that I honestly enjoy of "I only have eyes for you" by the Flamingos. You just got to search man. I heavily recommend you checking that song out if you like this song a lot. Be sure to check out the beck version, in my opinion.
IronFistedChampion I know that's kind of a meme thing to say, but in this situation it straight doesn't make sense. Did you expect a hero to appear in the video? The description?
Watch American Bandstand online. Just pick a year and you can discover what your grandparents and parents use to listen to. It's a lot of fun to see how the old singers entertained. Etta James great singer as well.
The preview for "Moonlight" is why I was looking for this song, but only could find it because the lyrics were in "Black Mirror." They only played the intro in the movie preview
Irma Irma Irma!!!!! Great voice--great moves! Ms. Thomas definitely IS sanctified! Very cool that this tune was recently resurrected on one of the Black Mirror episodes! Bonus on the gal reviewer in the beginning "I just don't like hillbilly music"! Ha! ( Mute Button On: What are you kiddin'??? NEVER!!! )
A quick trivia note about Johnny Burnette, whose song was featured on Rate A Record. I'm guessing this show was taped potentially days before Johnny Burnette died in a boating accident on 8/1/1964. At first I thought they were featuring his song because he had just passed, but you wouldn't think so by the way Dick was reacting at the end of the song. I wish we could see where Dick introduces the song just to confirm he had no idea of Johnny's passing. And I really like Johnny's song too.
Some of the Black Kids I recognize from the Clip The Jerk by The Larks. They really got down on that song. Can you imagine how dumbfounded their parents were when they saw their Kids on TV.
You can blame me Try to shame me And still I'll care for you💞 You can run around Even put me down Still I'll be there for you The world🌎 May think I'm foolish They can't see you👀 Like I can Oh but anyone Who knows what love is💞 Will understand Anyone Anyone Anyone I just feel so sorry (anyone) For the ones Who pity me 'Cause they just don't know (Anyone) Oh they don't what happiness love can be💗 I know I know to ever let you go Oh, it's more than I could ever stand Oh, but anyone Who knows what love is💞 Will understand Oh (anyone) they'll understand (Anyone) If they try love, they'll understand (Anyone) Oh, try to understand
Always loved Irma Thomas...oh so long ago. Didn't know that Johnny Burnette died a few days after this was on. I liked it music too! But never as much as the black female or male singers. Thanks for the video. Is Irma still alive?
finding an old song like this is better than finding money on the street
onemorebrando more like finding a song in general like this
To be honest, I feel so sorry for the ones who lost it .
@@IoT_ Conversely, I feel sorry for the ones who will never discover it.
Nah. I found two fifties recently and it is the best feeling 🎉
it really is!
Black mirror brought me here
ME TOO!!!
Same this is such a beautiful song and man why can't music be this good now a days
Me too...
And me

Irma Thomas is alive and well. I hope Black Mirror wakes up and gets her booked on season 4 for a nice easter egg moment!
Mike Gruhn that would be wonderful- make it happen Charlie! Mind you considering how every character who sings it has an unhappy fate would want to spare Irma that!

They listened!!!!
Mike Gruhn...from your lips to God's hear. That would really be deep
Her song appeared on Schitts Creek..which is on netflix
black mirror has this song stuck in my head I had to find the singer

Leave the letter -- for her and you.
Where do you work in New Orleans? I live there!
If I am ever so lucky to cross the big water, New Orleans is main place I'd love to see, and you are exactly the kind of person I am hoping to meet.
@@user-hy2ry3if8h well that is pretty darn nice of you to say. Thank you much. Peace
