- Just a couple of days after hitting 3k on IG, I hit 4k and I couldn’t be happier. Thank you all so much. I seriously don’t fully understand what is happening, all I know is that I am thoroughly enjoying this process so far.
While the 4K caught me a little off guard, I think we all know by now that I am always prepared to celebrate. 🎉💕
I bring you 25 richly dyed blocks that remind me of my Ghanaian/African tradition of sitting ‘by the fire side’ to tell stories. It’s a mix of the arrangement of the blocks and their fiery colours. Out of all the colours, it’s the reds and yellows for me. The occasional green block was good too. Aside the colours, the consistent crunch in this crush brought me immense satisfaction💕😍.
Anyways so by the fire side is the concept of gathering all the little kids to sit by a fire side under a huge tree and then the old folks in the village would tell stories.
A lot of the stories that featured were what we call the ‘Ananse stories’. These were the cartoons /kids fairy tales in the olden times for us in Ghana 🇬🇭. They were so well told - they had suspense, mystery, shocking outcomes and always always always a lesson to learn. In summary, Mr Ananse (who was a spider) was always trying to outsmart everyone which always proved futile. I’m sure some of these stories have been digitized now and can be found online. I can’t wait to tell them to my kids, please God 💕💕💕.
There is so much rich culture worldwide and it’s important that we not only know about them, but preserve them.

aw it’s always a delight for me to watch your crushes and read the description! It’s so interesting to know about your story. Sitting near the fireplace, listening to stories your mom/grandmother’s narrating is something I call quality time. I wish we could go back to those times because now it’s just kids watching random animated rhymes on channels like cocomelon or something. Lol. While reading your description I had the most vivid memory of reading (more like it being read to me ) a story of Anansi the spider. I live on the Southern tip of the African continent 🇿🇦 but we as a people of this continent we are story tellers to our core and so it isn't that surprising that Anansi's stories would have traveled all the way south. Thank you for that memory. It is actually really special as my fondest childhood memories are of my grandmother reading to me from the time I was an infant (quite literally). She never did learn to read or write Afrikaans (one of the official languages in South Africa, though she understood it and spoke it) When I was older, she would have me read and translate recipes for her from Afrikaans. Such a joy. I am still am and always will be the most avid reader. ❤

So my Ouma (grandmother in Afrikaans) used to work as a domestic worker (clean, cook, housework, and raising children) for British folk. It was then called working "in service".
Years after she had retired and was helping my Mum and Dad raise my sister and I (and the myriad of people she would take in and feed and clothe) she would always cook very traditional British food. Sunday was roast day complete with Yorkshire puddings and loads of gravy! 🤌🤌 Sunday afternoon tea was accompanied by Victoria Sponge. Christmas was for trifle!
There were however many recipes that evolved from the rich melting pot of cultures around Cape Town, Dutch, Malay, English and the indigenous people of the Western Cape. There is the wonderful Malay curry, milder and, in my opinion, much more flavourful, than the spicier Idian versions. Hearty stews bursting with whatever vegetables were available to make it stretch to feed an entire brood, cabbage, carrots, potatoes, patat (sweet potato/yam), mielies (corn) all in one pot simmered together with braised meat...."potjiekos" (literally pot food ~ "potjie" is the diminutive form of pot) And then there is a Cape delicacy....fried snoek. A snoek is a kind of mackerel (fish) found in Cape waters. It would be eaten hot out of the pan with a "smoortjie" a warm tomato and onion sauce, often spiced up with chillies.
Many of these recipes were passed down from generation to generation in the oral tradition, but some would be written in Afrikaans, a melting pot language if ever there was one, and those were the ones my Ouma would have me read to and translate for her. ❤❤❤

Have you considered please writing a recipe book so some of us can venture to taste this deliciousness? Your describe it so well!!!! some of my favorite traditions we do is eating pappardelle noodles (usually with either bolognese or a mushroom sauce), helping my grandma make homemade arancini and then in the morning have some freshly baked panettone :)
