I think a lot of people are ripping on this guitar for all the wrong reasons. If you think of it as being a replica of the custom shop version, you'll be disappointed because it just isn't the same guitar, even on major specs like the wood the neck is constructed of. But, if you think of it as a standard with some extra customizations and look at what it offers, I actually think there are some really interesting specs on it.
If you note the mahogany neck with a volute, the high output bridge pickup, ebony fretboard (on a standard), and MoP inlays those are not normal specs. In fact, the volute is something people have been begging Gibson to do.
In short, I think that if you think of it as a standard with some upgrades that Adam Jones chose, it is a really interesting guitar. That miscommunication is 100% on Gibson though.

TBH, I picked up an Adam Jones Les Paul standard for £2299 from GAK and it's rather awesome..

...and when all this has died down we'll be eagerly awaiting some sort of silverburst V with a split headstock like Adam is playing on the current tour..! HOW much?!?!?

I was fortunate enough to to get one of the AJ Standards and it is a really nice Standard- not a Custom…a Standard with some very nice additional appointments as Davis Phillips said below. If you don’t want it, don’t buy it. But don’t assume it is any lesser quality either. As a matter of fact , you should see what Adam plays live

Thanks Dave I didnt realize that these were released. Heard it here first ladies and Gentlemen. Im in agreement that this is not a favorite finish. A while back I saw a person make a comment about this color finish and it was called gravestone burst lol, It does have a depressing look to it in my opinion. To all you guys and gals who love it.......Go for it! I guess I would have to see it in person but im not in a hurry. Thanks again for the update. See you Saturday LIVE!!!

But they still couldn't put the correct bridge pickup in.

I think they look alright.... it's good to know that it's going to be a standard production run so people won't be trying to flip them (as much) . And yeah, I got so tired of waiting for the Epiphone version that I bought myself one of the Epiphone 61 SG's with the burstbuckers in it. Plugged it in tonight and WOW! Just my opinion here, but it does everything that a Gibson SG should!

All the people asking for the Epiphone…there’s already an Epiphone silverburst Les Paul Custom ebony board available now. I’d just buy that and replace the pickups with something similar to what Adam Jones has and you got your own signature for much less than an official release.

  • @themaggot8

I like it. I've always wanted a silverburst LP, but since Gibson came up with Adam's signature custom the prices just went too high, so this standard looks like a nice option. Also, I couldn't care less if it isn't what Adam uses, in fact I couldn't care less that it's Adam's signature model, I just love the way it looks and if I get it, I'm gonna swap the pickups anyway to make a little more "me"

For Epiphone My one hope is that if they do release their version that they take a page out of the recently released 61 Les Paul SG and get rid of the veneer. I think we all realize we’re not going to get the electronics other than the 50s wiring in this level guitar. Yeah it may be more affordable, have his name on it but if you want to justify having his name on it you Gotta do more than JUST put his name on it. Paint the front the correct burst (teardrop) and the back black. They probably do some custom probuckers that wind up getting replaced anyway with the Duncan distortion. I can’t see it getting the same construction with the 70s rounded profile neck and volute though that is another nice thing to wish for. And course it’s all a wish. But then I woke up.

Wow, they FINALLY hit the trigger on the USA Adam Jones - only took like 18 months, lol.
I agree that this guitar seems rather crappy when you consider that there are much nicer Gibsons for the same price or less with nicer binding, burst finishes on both sides, better pickups, etc. I wouldn’t expect this guitar to be exactly the same as the pricier AJ’s, but they could have done much better. Also, the AJ case should have come with this guitar (now we know why they sold those AJ cases without a guitar lol), the mirror should have come with it (it would have cost Gibson a few cents to toss a teeny mirror into the case candy), etc.
I’m willing to bet that the Epiphone model will be MUCH nicer than this model . . . or at least you’ll have saved a boat load of cash even if it’s just as crappy.
The $10,000 models are really nice, even if it’s not my thing. The v2 was just weird. This one is a shadow of an AJ. Seems rather pointless to call it an AJ at this point without the right pickups, the mirror, and certain other spec appointments.

The pickups seem to be wired differently too. No push/pull pots. I preordered but I’m not completely convinced.

Doesn't seem crappy to me. A regular USA standard is $2700. You can get a nice top on a normal standard but likely won't have a AAA top for that unless you spend $3000 on a dealer exclusive or Slash model. What the Adam Jones standard gives you for $3000 besides the artist branding and 70s neck/volute is an ebony fretboard, mother of pearl inlays and a nicer case. That stuff seems worth $300 to me, especially the real mother of pearl inlays which are normally only on customs and honestly look so much better up close than the acrylic/Cellulose Nitrate you get on everything else. This guitar is really so unique compared to the other artist series that just use different pickups/tuners/plastics/colors.

@@derekspipesandcigars1892 Gratz, it is a great looking guitar and the specs are really something special. I'm sure your going to love it.
I don't think people are really down on it so much as they have the attitude of how can you call a standard an Adam Jones artist model when he is famous for playing a custom. That's true but this standard is practically a custom with the ebony/MOP and the 70s neck profile which I'm guessing was directly modeled after Jones custom. If it had multi-ply binding and square inlays it would basically be an old Gibson silver burst custom.

Oh, that's how they're going to sell those extra cases. Which are probably the cases from the "stolen" ones anyway. This is the only model where it'd be better if it didn't come with a case so you could just buy the $300 one. 😂 did you get a new Epiphone dave?

  • @georgecaplan11

It’s a disappointment. Looking forward to the Epiphone version because you can upgrade the pickups on the Epiphone and still have change.

A $2000 painted guitar for $3k, but I guess there's no reason for gibson to make it if they're going to charge $2k for it.
Have had 15 gibson guitars in the last 25 years, and now zero. It's not realistic to believe that anything coming from the standard line is going to be representative of what a pro will play. A pro may go through a *whole bunch of them* and find one here and there that's good.
But I did more fret leveling and stability correction on the gibsons that I had when I wanted to sell them than anything other than mid-range tokais (they were about the same).
Somewhere in the price spread above has to come making this worth making for gibson and paying adam jones. So that you can get a signature guitar that he doesn't really play...which is a really weird concept. I'm paying extra so that an artist fee can be passed along to get a guitar that the artist doesn't actually play.

A regular Standard is only $300 less and you're getting MOP inlays and Ebony besides the new bridge pickup. Doesn't seem crazy to me.
As far as buying AJ's guitar, I bought one and I don't even like Tool, just like I bought a Slash and don't care for him either. It's about the guitar for not the Sig for some.

For me it feels like an expensive Epiphone... it is heavy and has Grover tuners... yawn... . They must be in trouble if they want to make so many Silverburst , because it used to be the most desirable finish.. Goldtops and Sunbursts were always much easier to find...

The Inspired by Gibson line from Epiphone already has a Les Paul Custom silverburst. Musicians Friend/Guitar Center was blow'n em out at $620 right before this last price hike went into effect. Now there back up to around $749. I threw some Zakk Wylde 81/85 EMGs and Gotoh keystone locking tuners on mine. With the Schaller straplocks and black Epiphone hardcase, I've got just over a $stack$ into it. Looks, plays and sounds like nothing else in my collection. It serves the purpose it's intended for at a third the cost of a Gibson.
