    MCC is one of the most beautiful souls you’ll ever know. During the whole COVID quarantine she did a weekly series of SONGS FROM HOME, and played dozens of her hits and deep album cuts, keeping us sane and connected. I have all of her albums, it’s hard to pick a favorite song, and many people here have suggested her many hits, but my suggestion is “Only a Dream” especially the live version, it’ll bring tears to your eyes…and yes, the girl can sing! And you’ll love the piano…

      "MCC is one of the most beautiful souls you’ll ever know". Absolutely. I got to meet her back in my radio days when she opened a concert that we'd sponsored, and she killed that night-including the full, NSFW version of "Opening Act". We had to do the "meet and greet" on her tour bus, because there weren't any backstage rooms at the theater and she kept saying "I don't understand why you'd want to meet _me_ because all of the staff that went to the show wanted to meet her and not the headliner.
      I've got really nice picture of the two of us-I'm more than a foot taller than her so I had to sit, but it's painfully obvious that I was (and still am) seriously crushing on her.

    That unique "Zydeco" sound with the use of the accordion bellows to reinforce the rhythm..
    I was forced to play the accordion (poor me) from ages 6 - 16, this was 1968 - 1978. I remember messing around with my accordion before the paid hour of instruction ($7.00 per lesson) started and accidentally discovering a primitive version of that interesting Zydeco sound by pushing and pulling the bellows really fast with the rhythm of the song my friend was practicing. It was a moment of music discovery and collaboration.
    Our accordion teacher Mrs. Zahn came bursting through the door into the room with myself and four other students and demanded that I stop, pack up my instrument and report to the Accordion School Manager for discipline.
    I had no idea that what I was doing was wrong, before the lesson, we would always be doing scales or practicing runs, like when an orchestra gets ready before a performance.
    The head guy at this Accordion School told me I was destroying my accordion, wrecking the inner workings of instrument and disrespecting the "Milton Mann Accordion Studios" fine reputation. He reminded me that my parents had paid a lot of money for my instrument and the lessons and that they would be notified of my disruptive behavior unless I promised to stop, which I did.
    I was practically in tears at age 9.
    We were told that shaking the bellows to create that happy sound was the equivalent of "The Who" smashing their instruments after a performance. It may be harder on the inner workings of the accordion to play it that way, but I don't know, worth it for the sound.
    This was back in the day, if I messed up, my parents used a belt on us, so the last thing I wanted get in trouble.
    It's good to hear this "forbidden" accordion style of music perfected after all these years ..
    After a quick Google search I've found that Zydeco and Cajun music is usually played on an instrument that is not the full keyboard accordion that I played as a kid. It's a smaller squeeze box type deal but I have seen full size accordion players recreate that sound on "Austin City Limits" or somewhere...
    Great video, love you guys, thanks for the new song for my playlist..

    • @chrisdutton2975
      @chrisdutton2975 2 года назад +4

      I was hoping someone who knew more than me would mention Zydeco, because I was pretty sure that was the right genre to reference. I believe the squeeze box I glimpsed in the video is called a concertina.

    • @scottcortmeister4164
      @scottcortmeister4164 2 года назад +2

      @Maya Nightwolf We moved to Washington State when I was 16 to a small town, so no more lessons for me. I'd still have to play at birthday parties, weddings or upon request.
      I went into the Navy at 18 and volunteered for Submarine duty, so I couldn't take my accordion, it was too big to fit down the water tight hatch. The folks wanted a boat so they sold my accordion, sometimes I miss it but digital keyboards satisfy me when I get the urge to play.
      My Mom and Dad laughed when I showed them what I was doing with the accordion, so the crisis was averted.

    Congratulations, not just on getting with Mary Chapin Carpenter but on discovering the Zydeco/Cajun sound. I used to go out dancing to this every week when I lived in Seattle and before that I used to go to the Twist & Shout when I lived in DC during the 1980s. Yes, Ms Carpenter is singing about a real thing, a Zydeco dance club that existed in Washington D.C., where I believe she started her career. Of course the homeland for Cajun and Zydeco dance & music is Louisiana, especially around Lafayette.
    Make sure you catch Chapin's "Stones in the Road" and "Passionate Kisses".

    Yes Mary Chapin Carpenter! This is definitely one of her most upbeat "party" songs, and the only one I know with Cajun influence. She's an amazing singer-songwriter, but not your typical country artist, starting her career in the Washington DC area. Her album Come Come On was chock full of hits and was the peak of her commercial career in the mid 90's.
    I Feel Lucky, I Take My Chances, He Thinks He'll Keep Her , Shut Up and Kiss Me, Why Walk When You Can Fly... so many amazing songs.

    I've seen MCC live on three ocassions and she is an incredible talent, performer, mucisian and human being. I 1st saw her singing on a PBS show in the 80's and have been a fanboy since.

    Mary Chapin-Carpenter is to me a major talent whose music spans both country, rock and other music genres. You might also want to check out: "Walking Through Fire," "He Thinks He'll Keep Her" and "Quittin' Time". Just incredible music!

    Most of her catalog is slower and more relaxed. A very thoughtful and intelligent songwriter. When she started out in the business, the record company promoted her as a country artist. She didn't object, but thought herself to be more folk than country. But,there are a few up-tempo songs like this. I enjoy MCC early in the morning with a cup of coffee and just ease into the day.

    She was marketed by the record company as county but she is more like Americana folk. The live performance of “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her” would be a great female Friday song.

    My Mom loves this song!!!! My brothers and I were teenagers when this song came out, my Mother would turn it up, and dance with us around the living room! She used to say that if we want a good woman, then we need to pick one who is never afraid to dance and act silly. If a lover cannot dance with you, then they could never ever truly love you. Thanks!

    Every time I hear that zydeco sound I immediately think of Jo-el Sonnier and especially the song "Tear Stained Letter"... one of my favorites by him. You should definitely give it a listen... Amber may finally dance right out of that chair!

    Mary Chapin Carpenter put out some great music during the '90s. Her 1992 album COME ON, COME ON is a joy, from start to finish. You'd both really enjoy it. Happy Fathers' Day, Jay!
