  • Sidelying Massage Techniques for the Low Back
When it comes to treating the low back, the sidelying massage position can be a game-changer! This unique positioning is not only comfortable for your massage client but also offers numerous benefits for accessing and targeting the muscles of the low back.
By lying on your side during a massage session, the low back muscles are more accessible and can be effectively addressed. As a massage therapist, you can incorporate a variety of massage techniques, including deep tissue, myofascial release, and stretching, to address specific issues in the low back. The therapist can use their hands, elbows, or even specialized tools to release muscle tension, improve flexibility, and alleviate pain and discomfort.
In this short video, Erk Dalton demonstrates sidelying massage and shows you how he addresses low back pain by placing the client in a sidelying position. Notice how he has the client place their arm overhead and how he uses one hand to pull the pelvis downward to provide sufficient space to use his elbow between the pelvis and ribs.
This massage technique is part of a systematic approach for treating postural dysfunction called Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, an approach developed by Erik Dalton, PhD. Erik Dalton is widely regarded as one of the foremost innovators in the massage profession. He has studied with some of the profession's leading clinicians, like Ida Rolf and famed osteopath Phillip Greenman. He is the developer of Myoskeletal Alignment Techniques, a system of manual therapy that addresses and heals pain patterns at their very core.

I LOVE working on someone in side lying position. Had to learn how for my pregnancy clients years ago and really found it an effective position. I really like how you always teach excellent body mechanics in all your work.

That's great! Yes, we are three dimensional beings with more than a front and back. 🤓

Love it. Always looking for new ways to work with this space. Idk if I can do it backwards, but I can certainly have clients do these movements. ❤ Including client movements.
