Did the same for me as even a lighter skinned child (I was darker than I am now back in the day, because I practically LIVED in the glory of the sun, being burn-proof and all...lol) who grew up in the south. I didn't understand when I was little what my darker fam went through, but I did when I got a little older. I'm so glad this song was able to uplift you, dark skin is beautiful too! Remember many of us kids singing this at every opportunity in elementary school. It gave us dignity and a feeling of empowerment. And a lot of kids were encouraged to embrace their heritage.

American music at the time was quite shit literally because they were too racist. The brits were less so, and they allowed themselves to be inspired by black music, creating a new era. But as with basically most things in western music since the 20th century, the pillar is black music.

It stayed in Jet Magazine at number 1 so long that they had to make it an honorary hit so that the other groups had a chance to be number one!!!

@rayburton4867 we still need to listen to this song on a daily basis. Check out how we are hearing more and more that Blacks are the "problem". Something is amidst. Something is changing! Stop listening to that poison hip hop music, stop listening to fear-based things (because they know we LOVE the drama in the trauma), The Jewish blame us for not allowing them to be the Jews, Whytes don't like us because we are the dominant gene carriers, we are talented, competitive, sing better, jump higher, etc and yet they want to give us the envsions of being enslaved. That is Hollywood during the Reconstruction Period teaching our children that mess. And so now, a Reconstruction Period is in our horizon again, using the children to influence the future, again. Remember, we are Shemites, so of course we cannot be anti-semetic, we are the American Indians, remember how everyone use to say, "we have Indian in us," as well, the history books revealed that the "indians" didn't make good slaves. Hmmmm. So they brought over people, JUST AS THEY ARE DOING NOW to fulfill some kind of purpose (slavery). And what we must do ...because they are trying to INDIVIDUALIZE everyone, and it's working! Look at the word INDIVIDUAL! Each of us are DUAL/Two - meaning we each have a feminine consciousness and a masculine consciousness that are suppose to work together as ONE. And in that respect, there is no gender. But the sexes are very much gendered. Man and Woman! And what they have done was separated the Man and the Woman, especially our Black Families. REASON FOR THAT is that Blacks have been first on this planet and are the TRENDSETTERS! You see that it has taken 30 years for the entire world to start getting the rhythm and dancing like us. Now, they feel they don't need us. But we must return to each other, learn to love and respect each other because we are ALL that we have. These people have been busy manipulating our minds with distorted music frequencies, using psychological drama that we intake through our minds that embeds in our consciousness. CLEVER! THIS SONG NEEDS TO BE OUR ANTHEM. HEARD EVERY DAY. The 70's were the BEST TIME for us. And because of that, infiltration treated like a war against us using Hollywood movies to create the pimps, thugs, drug dealers so that we would glorify them. And we did! We must now break that curse. Stop the intake of all music that is negative and all tv and movies that are negative. We are at the point where we no longer know who to protect our families and who from. People are upset because we are now Awakening! INDIVIDUAL when broken down states that the "DUAL is divided" which creates unalignment in each of us. We must recognize that we are DUAL, as explained. Feelings and Ideas are of the feminine consciousness to be nurture and grow, while the masculine consciousness is when the feeling and idea is more matured to further give Thought to it and possibly or eventually become a manifested reality. Anger sets in when the masculine consciousness is not aligned with the feminine consciousness! If we are at war/battling with self, most definitely will show up outside of self. Therefore, we must return back to self reflection. Because we are the "water"/feelings/emotion that we are inside that flows also on the outside of each one of us as our reflections. This is how a person can be read like a book! Their outward appearance is a reflection of their inward appearance of the Mind. Even looking out of our two eyes reflects upon what we see and it triggers a negative thought, that leads right back to our minds. We could actually change the world by changing our Minds. Saying NO THANKS to the music and shows that the world is feeding us. We haven't been as creative as we use to be, and we really and truly MUST return back to doing so. It is clear that others don't want us to think highly of ourselves, want us to always be angry, envious, etc. And we must change/erase that within us! SAY IT LOUD, I LOVE MYSELF AND THEREFORE, I LOVE MY PEOPLE. PEACE

Sounds a bit xenophobic and divisive to me. Black people need to come together more than ever. Back in the day when this song came out, this was an anthem for all blacks but do your thing. I'm 64 years old...I was 13 when Dr. King was murdered. I remember the anger, the boiled-over rage in my city- and it was the same in cities across the country. If it had not been for James Brown - this country would have gone up in flames, and the streets would have been soaked with blood. He toured the hot spots - unafraid - and calmed crowds...spoke to them from stages...in the streets, to keep this country from imploding. He was something else.......
