"OK, my friends..."
Smoked paprica is my favorite. I put that on just about everything.
Lovely! Thank you so much. I love smoked paprika, and I totally agree- nutrient rich soil is the key to delicious food and spices. I also love the idea of keeping them whole until you're ready to use them. Freshly ground spices taste infinitely better, and once you've used them fresh the idea of using stale spices just won't cut it.
I started my gardening life at 8yrs old laying between rows of tomatoes and eating figs from the trees on the northern side of a 1/4 acre wedgie patch in central New South Wales in Australia, way back in 1960.
Now at 70 after a bad accident in 2005, I am restricted to planting the tops of every pineapple we eat all homegrown and lemons from 3 trees.
Most of our bananas these days we are beaten too by flying foxes. Anyway rambling again BUT you have my Sub.

I’ve made smoked paprika for years. Love it! My main variety is Ferenc Tender. My technique is the same, smoke for a few hours then dehydrate to a crisp. If you grind a bunch it will keep its flavor in the freezer. That way you don’t have to grind so often.
Have you considered, or tried, vacuum sealing? Just an idea.
Yes definitely a post I didn’t know I needed. Smoked paprika is my guilty pleasure. Whenever I’m cooking I have a naughty eye on this amazing spice... should I, shouldn’t I.... ok just a little :)
Oh wow! Okay this is interesting stuff for us! We are a semi-retired couple who bought a 62 acre island on a lake in the wilderness of Canada this past summer! We are already starting to build and we are planning a geothermal greenhouse as well! What a ride!!! 😊
Amazing channel, I'll work with your knowledge, thanks so much,
Nate, you're a natural! Your videos are top notch! No one would ever guess that you hadn't been doing this for decades! ThanQ!
I appreciate the inspiration my friend thank you!!
@@gardenlikeaviking 😍
I'm buying a dehydrator this week and going to fire up the smoker soon. I'm ready to try this now that my peppers are ripe. Thanks Nate!
Glad this video came along when it did. Paprika/chili powder is one of the things I am looking to up my game in this year. I normally grow poblanos, but I've added pasilla and mirasol peppers this year too. I'm looking for a more complex, mid-heat powder this year. I had planned on smoked and plain dried chiles, but I hadn't thought about the smoked onions and garlic to add in. I am nearly out of smoked onions from last year so I'm planning on doing more this summer, and I haven't smoked and dried garlic before, so I'm looking forward to that. Thanks for the ideas!
I think this is my 5th time back at this video, getting ready for my large pepper harvest. I am going to be testing a few other varieties this year. Thanks so much for teaching us how to use the harvest!
Your my go to guy this spring. If just for your enthusiasm alone your channel is subscribable but you have so much more. Great content, interesting topics and editing just adds to the the process. We love smoked paprika and use it almost daily. Blessings friend.
Poblanos! Yep, they’re in the mix & now they have a dedicated purpose this season! Thanks!!
This is the video i was waiting for all my life not even joking, i once ate a dish with the most amazing paprika powder, it was sweet and smokey and flavourful, i looked for it in every store i could and never succeeded but now with this video you bet im going to try this out with my corno rosso paprikas this year :):) Could you make more spice videos in the feauture? I would love to learn how to make the best tasting spices like garlic powder, and i absolutely love onion powder aswell.
Im so glad your sharing this i formation to the world big thanks :)
I absolutely love your Chanel. Such passion and so much knowledge delivered brilliantly 😊
Awesome..I am doing this .. this year!!
Thanks Nate great vid. You're the best teacher.
I grow the Alma Paprika. You are absolutely right. Nothing in the store have I found that can touch the smell or taste of homemade smoked peppers. You are very Knowledgeable on many subjects. Keep the positive energy flowing.
thank you for the positive energy and feedback my friend!!!
Wow. I never knew. Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I would love to try it someday !
Oh my gosh, I had never thought of making my own. Guess who is going to be planting a few extra pepper plants seeds in the coming weeks. Thanks so much for the idea.
We grow Hungarian Hot Wax peppers as well as a few other types. I had no idea that this is how you get paprika or smoked paprika. Guess I will be letting a couple plants go full term and start making our own! Thanks for the video and information!
I can almost smell it from this side of the pond, cheers Nate
Love videos like this. I had to buy supermarket peppers until I get my pepper game up and going, but man it was delicious too! I love that you can't buy this, its costs you effort and love
nicee video. thank you for the knowledge
I dried and powdered Alma Paprika pepper last year, so good! The pepper has a very ripe sweetness, with a moderate even burn. The flavor profile un-smoked is devine. I will try smoking some this year.
I just smoked a bunch of pablanos last week!!! They are Devine.
I’ll try Hungarian peppers next. Another good video Nate. 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼
Thank you very much! Best regards from Germany :)
I learned something new today! Thank you 🙏🏾
Thanks Nate, my poblano’s are doing great definitely going to try your recipe thanks again 👍🙏🏼
good luck my friend remember to let them smoke for a nice long while!!
Thanks for sharing
Nate you got me trying all kinds of new things 😅and can’t wait
I grew ajvarski this year just to try this. No dehydrator yet so I'll dry them in the oven after smoking. Thanks.
Thanks Nate!
That looks fantastic! I am definitely going to smoke some peppers at the end of summer and try my hand at making homemade smoked paprika. Thanks so much for teaching us your method. And I also have the Cosori dehydrator and LOVE IT. I actually have two of them and they work beautifully. Like you said, for the price they really can't be beat.
I just cant get enough of these videos!
I think I need to start some more pepper seeds! I can't wait to try this - I was thinking I needed a dedicated smoker, but now I know my Weber will be perfect 😊 thank you, Nate! ❤
That looks amazing!
Oh, my friend! This is so delicious looking! Poblanos are my favorite pepper. But, I will be starting some Hungarian Wax pretty soon. Great info as usual!💜🌱💜
Definitely saving this for my pepper harvest. What mic you using? Voice sounding nice and crispy
I'm hungry!
I've been waiting for this! Thank you so much!!
I string them up with a needle and thread and hang to dry from raw. Definitely going to try cooking them first this year. Yum!
I usually plant for fermented pepper salsa but I might have to change my plans. Smoked paprika sounds delish. Thank you Nate!
you won't be disappointed!
Why not do both if you can?
Yesterday I started the seed for some paprika. 😆 Couldn't help myself!
@@2Blackdiamond You are just too freakin' cool! 😂🌶‼
You da bomb! Thanks again Nate!
Yes sir. I like the spice.
You just put peppers on my list. Bring on the green fire!
There seems to be a theme in your videos.........SOIL! SOIL! SOIL! 😂
lol thats right!!... plants are just an expression of what is happening in the soil
@@gardenlikeaviking ☑‼
I have missed peppers so much being on the AIP. I am hoping to have healed enough that I can do THIS!
Okay now I'm convinced I need a blender and dehydrator lol
yes you do!... it opens so much possibilities with food storage and especially making your own spices!
Excellent video. Very glad you shared. I've been wanting to make my own spices.
BTW was that a goldenrod plant in the video I saw ? Looked like it
oh yes I definitely have sever goldenrods around the place that I allow to flower each year
Nice. I found some growing wild nearby and collected the seeds and spread I my garden.
Hello
I have sowed passion fruit seeds , what care do I need to take. What shall be the watering, fertilizer and pesticide/fungicide/insecticide schedule? Can you please help me out with it?
Regards
🙏🙏🙏
I have the same dehydrator works great. I make fruit leather in it.
Hey Nate! I'm still going to grow potatoes but my long term goal is to grow peanuts as my staple crop. Much healthier (boiled) and the shells can be used as a replacement for coconut coir.
actually you can't get much healthier than potatoes my friend they are truly amazing especially when grown in nutrient rich soil bursting with life!!!... peanuts are also good but never could they replace potatoes IMHO
@@gardenlikeaviking This year will be my first go at potatoes. I love them, and now seems like a good time to have a good harvest. Peanuts are amazing too. But I have awesome soil that can handle the heavy feeding with a little love.
I planted like 100 peanuts this year with the same thing in mind but the mice dug them all up and ate them. I didn't get a single sprout 😅
Be careful with peanuts re aphlotoxins (sp?)
@@garthwunsch This is why I pressure boil my peanuts for 4 hours along with adding apple cider vinegar, garlic, and turmeric to my seasoning.
Fantastic!
Freeze drying? Would it do just as well?
Instead of a grill, im doing them over my firepit and making a teepee from branches to contain the smoke. Thanks for the info!
yes thats also a great way and the old school traditional way!!
I’m happy that I’m growing poblanos this year, although, they don’t get huge in my soil.
be sure to add some wood ash for big peppers!!
@@gardenlikeaviking Thank You 🙏
I've got hot Hungarian Wax and Poblanos coming along nicely! Thank you!
I have a lot of scrap cherry left over from making my art. I use that for smoking meats and cheese. I suspect that cherry wood would be amazing for this.
cherry is another fantastic choice!!
you can get little packets from amazon that will absorb oxygen. pop a few in a jar seal it and they prevent oxidation. It's easier than back filling with nitrogen.
where do you buy your seeds? mygreathanks and blessings
Surprised to see the pablano scored so high, I'll have to give them a try. I was surprised that smoking the peppers could be achieved so easily. I always thought it'd be harder.
its so easy but the key is to use big chunks of wood not the little wood chips... and oak is the most intense flavor of smoke IME
thank you as always. is now good time to start peppers from seeds?
yes now is pretty much the ideal time no matter what zone you are in... our last frost date here is may 15 so I start mine about 6-8 weeks before that date
@@gardenlikeaviking awesome, thank you. I have pretty much the same zone as yours, 6b-eastern PA. Blessings to you, my friend. Eva
Awesome video! Thanks. Is there a traditional smoke for smoked paprika? I know that chipotle is traditionally jalapenos under mesquite smoke. It's probably worth experimenting with both spices.
FYI I did a batch of chipotle a few years back with legitimate hot jalapenos. The heat carries over and it's a few tsp to a batch of chili. Vent the room when you grind this stuff. :)
yes my friend I've done the homemade chipotle and its so blazing hot I can hardly use much!!!... I am not certain about the traditional smoke but I do know for me the best flavor by far is from oak wood smoke
Do you cook the peppers etc first Nate or just put them straight on the grill?
Straight onto the grill, my friend!!
I don't have a dehydrator, but I'll let you know how solar dehydrating works. I'm drooling for this spice.
very nice!.. solar dehydration from just setting in the sun or did you build some kind of device to speed the solar process?
@@gardenlikeaviking still experimenting with a home made device, but we live in Africa, so heat isn't much of an issue
from my experiance
for mild or hot by far tastiest pepper for drying are the Reza macedonian peppers
for the the sweet is another macedonian pepper that video actually mentioned is the ayvarski pepper
I bought seeds for this pepper last year but didnt have space to plant it. Maybe this year.
Cool my frend im glad i found you in 2024😊
Whats the secret for keeping bugs off you peppers and plants? We have fruit and leaves with holes in them, where bugs have go to them. Your plants look great!
Ive got loads of habaneros I'm going to smoke tomorrow with some garlic.
Yum
So the reds(cornado del toros?) weren’t smoked? Just the poblanos? Could I use bell peppers? I generally grow hotter peppers like jalapeños, for chipotle, but I want to try something different. I’m making hot sauce, but paprika sounds interesting. And store bought sucks. Or is too expensive(for me) for good quality.
any kind of pepper can be smoked and dried and it will be amazing... I like particular ones due to the thickness of the skin and subtle sweetness of the flesh.. the ones that made the best paprika were the Ajvarski peppers from baker creek seeds... amazing!!
@@gardenlikeaviking thanks.
I’m gonna be trying this with cayennes, I only have so much use for fermented hot sauce and I already have a ton! 😂
Okay my friends here it is:. I've got to do this myself!
Extremely helpful video. Especially seeing the level of “done-ness” after smoking. I have also grown a couple hundred poblano, Hungarian hot wax and jalapeños to sell from my little greenhouse. I’m going to link to your video in my fb posts… everyone’s saliva glands will be in overdrive… they’ll be lined up at the door on opening day!!! I have well over a 1,000 person reach! 600 on one page that I’m admin for!
thats really cool garth I'm happy you are spreading the word about these awesome skills everyone can be doing!! thank you my friend and best of luck!
Also, I never put much though into it, but I wonder where we draw our lines with paprika vs chipotle vs chili powder. We have expectations but I don't have any idea what peppers are in chili powder.
paprika is typically any of the Hungarian Wax pepper types that have gone fully ripe... chipotle is the smoked jalapeño pepper when its been allowed to age fully to red... chili powder can be so many things!
You’re living the life I want to live.
stay focused and keep the vision strong and it'll happen for you my friend no doubt!!!
Salt, pepper, paprika 🌶
Yummy yummy 🤤🤤🤤
i got super rich soil here, been composting my whole life
Smoked Hungarian = smoky paprika
Smoked poblano = ancho
Smoked red jalapeno = chipotle
Smoked Bhut Jolokia = stupid hot
Smoked Trinidad Scorpion = inedible
lol thats a pretty solid rundown thank you!!
Hi really like your channel and you do all organic but I have question for you? Why did you use chemical briquettes instead of charcoal in a barbecue and you put garlic on aluminum foil instead on metal tray. We all know how aluminum is so bad specially garlic in that stage.
Lol. You can't get this cuz I grew them in "nutrient dense soil bursting with life". That's exactly what I will say when people taste my peppers 🤣🤣
WOW!!!! thank you
Even better than McDonald's barbecue sauce??? Thanks I'm going to try this but can't get those peppers here, usual story, we've got lots of varieties of potatoes though.
lol I hope you are joking my friend.... and I'd be shocked if you can't get the classic Hungarian Wax Pepper there!!?
♥️♥️♥️
Well, I think I got a new project.
Hello
👊🏻
😳🤤😋!
The world of pepper plants. Easy to grow but that cross pollination is a biachi
thats no joke and I wish I would've mentioned that in the video!!
@@gardenlikeaviking you have said it before, bit this I have "first hand knowledge" of as you like to say. All kinds of sweet peppers with weird shapes , sweet hot you name it, planted the seeds and got even stranger results.
I wear gloves when I seed peppers. If you choose not to, be warned from my mistake. Do not pick your nose.
But if you rub your eyes they will not itch again for at least an hour.
Or touch your "delicate bits". Lol. Don't ask me how I know that. . .
@@Jdngls 🥴
@@katherinepettus5132 Yup, I am goofy. But, even in zone 4a, I can grow some wicked hot peppers and it isn't a joke. Be careful boys and girls. :-D
@@Jdngls nice work, thats a rough zone for peppers! My mom gardens in that zone and doesnt get a ton of success with them.
But definitely, stay safe folks. 🤣
Twitter account?
I have never considered that but maybe it's something I should do!?... I just have never used twitter
@@gardenlikeaviking I used to think it was lame as hell. But I decided to try it and it seems it’s a good communication tool . You have lots of great knowledge to share and Twitter should help you grow.
