I live very close to a city centre and a Tawny has visited recently, a few times about a month apart. It's so sad, because I'm sure it's calling for a mate when there'll be nothing for it round here. Sounds beautiful though, and takes me back to my childhood living near the countryside.
The ones outside my bedroom window have this conversation all night. It sounds quite melancholic and haunting but I think it's probably a domestic dispute about who's doing the dishes (owls can't afford dishwashers).
Janus O'Blivion Same! Finally worked out what I was hearing outside my house was a tawny owl (I think calling another tawny owl) and not some demented dying creature
Thanks for this. To me, it is so comforting. Reminding me that there is more to life than human endeavor. I am supposed to be asleep. I hear him in the small wood in the distance and I lay there waiting impatiently for his next sentence. I always smile the second time I hear it, because then, I am sure I did and it was not a dream. I stroke my sons hair if he is in my bed, and go to sleep feeling reconciled with the previous day.

I live in West Lancashire and can hear a few Tawny owls! They sound wonderful... I’m playing Tawny Owl noises via RUclips out of my window. It’s making them call more often - beautiful!

I was woken at 4:30 this morning by a Tawny, rushed downstairs opened back door and the volume of the hooting nearly blew me away, have never been so near to this magical creature, always heard from a distance. Settled back in bed and then the Foxes started screeching....a wildlife dawn
I have heard this call many many times. It always, without fail, instinctively makes me feel its in pain or distress. It always sounded very agonised to my ears

Saw a tawny owl just now. I was scrambling around in the undergrowth looking for a green woodpecker that I could hear calling, then this owl comes flying so quite over my head. I wasnt 100% sure what it was, until I gave up on trying to see it again and heard the classic hoot as I was walking away.
We took a walk in the woods with My best friend and we stopped to Listen to This beautiful sound🥰 The call was exactly the Same! Happy valentinesday!💗💌

Am watching the 1983 Hound of the Baskervilles (TV movie) and heard this beautiful call on the Moors. You can also hear this call in the Dark Castle computer games. Very haunting, like a little ghost calling out for its loved one. But also extremely comforting and peaceful to listen to. Would love to hear it in real life some day. Can't thank you enough for the video.
I could hear this coming from my garden last night, it was so loud it must have been sat on the fence or something, I recorded on my phone for a bit and I couldn't find what owl it was for ages, cheers for the helpful video
Been hearing this owl for the past few years or so and went to the Horniman museum today where I found out tawny owls are common in London. This video has confirmed that it is in fact a tawny owl I've been hearing all this time, including right now!

did you know the Tawny Owl's call is said to be associated with Bad luck or Death. Also i did a test to tell what kind of person you are with a animal and mine was the Tawny Owl makes me feel glad i got such a majestic bird

It's a male owl ,The females go tu it, the males go tu wu. It's just a sound they make to let the other owls know where they are.Not sad.

I've seen many barn owls but never heard one; and heard many tawny owls and never seen one.

It's the males that make that noise. The females say "Toowit" and the males reply "Tawoo"

Does these owls nake very squeaky noise when they are young? I am trying to indentify an owl, sound is squeaky like a whistle or puppy whining?
That is most likely the female you hear. She makes that sound in the breeding season.
