I think one thing toy collectors can do is to be less gatekeepy about the hobby. We like what we like, let others do the same, even if it's Funko Pops and not action figures, Marvel Legends and not imports, or fun customs without a masters degree in painting. Just join them in being excited - the excitement is the fun part!
well said!!!! its what ive been thinking all along and you finally put it into words. Toy collecting is my hobby from my hobby. i cycle, run, and have a lifetime of being commited to health and fitness. toy collecting is like my reward from that
There is no difference between a toy collector and a hardcore hunter. No difference between a collector and a hobby car builder, or a gym fanatic, or a book worm. Do what makes you happy. My wife likes to say she collects hobbies (knitting, drawing, cross stitch, etc) and I collect toys. Only difference is my hobby is fully displayed in our living room. My own sister in law once scoffed at me for collecting and said she’d make her husband throw the figs out, but yet he goes on multiple hunting and fishing trips per year without her and has deer heads and other crap hanging in their house. ITS THE SAME THING. Dammit… now hatter has me on a fucking rant. 😂
Perspective is needed here. The stereotype of toy collectors will iron itself out as the generations continue. Remember, we are the first generation (Gen X, Millennials) of people who truly grew up with viable and valuable IPs that could be properly monetized with respectable representations of those IPs. That goes for gaming, which was reborn and exploded in the 80s. Comics, which saw its popularity skyrocket in the 80s and 90s. And cartoons, which grew with the growth of cable television in the 80s and 90s. This generation will continue to redefine the stereotypes of toy collecting...it just takes time. Previous generations (most of the Baby Boomers and older) did not have nearly as many characters and tv media properties to grow nostalgic with. Seriously, if you're in your 30s, 40s or 50s and your grandma or grandpa is alive...ask them what their favorite cartoon or comic book character was. Oh and don't bother asking them about videogames. It's slim pickings for them. They spent their days outdoors and had generic dolls/toys that weren't specific to anything in particular. On the other hand, we had a wealth of IP from the 70s-2000s that companies can be mined for nostalgia.
I've known people for years that once I tell them I collect figures they look at you like a freak. Ill tell them I use them for stop motion and then I get a mixed reaction of cool to wtf is that? This is deadly accurate. I blame Big Bang Theory for confusing the general public on the difference between a "geek" and a nerd. I blame Disney shills for pushing the narrative that old school Star Wars fans are jocks and "dude bros". Nerds studied science, won math competitions and kept up with statistics. Star Wars geeks watched Star Wars movies, collected Star Wars toys and quoted the movies often.

Stereotypes exist for a reason, but I get what you're saying. I think the majority of toy collectors now don't fit that typical stereotype, although there are still A TON of them/us in our hobby. Female toy collectors are out there. They just collect dolls and plushies and other types of toys that aren't action figures.

6:00 Every girl that'd come over (including when I still lived with my parents at age 28 in the 2000s) thought my collection was cool. These were different types of women; and not one of them was a 🖖🤓 nerd. And most had no fucking clue what a lot of it was, but they still thought it was really neat. *That's so fucking nuts they put playing video games at the top of the list. I'm not a gamer, but most of the women I know/have known are PC gamers. And they put BIRD WATCHING as the least worst??? I swear man, if I told a woman I bird watched for a hobby, they'd think I have the personality of a potato or I'm a fuckin' serial killer.
Be who you are never change for anyone because who you are is your true self so changing makes you a fake you were the adults living our childhood dreams and were happy could be the happiest people in the world surrounded by action figures bliss.
Well i think it depends on the person that's collecting. When i tell people i collect turtles, they find it extremely cool and endearing. I'm a big dude who boxes (and has a face to show for it) and lifts weights and when i tell them that, it's a cool contrast. But you do have collectors who just are nerds and ONLY nerds. I'm not saying it's good to make fun of them but it's kinda not a surprise, to be honest
My wife used to encourage me to collect, She would say I rather you be collecting toys and comics then be out drinking and doing drugs and getting into trouble, When I lost her I lost my best friend, but when I see people trying the stereotype crap it just makes me roll my eyes and laugh at how childish they are, Because to me it just amuses the hell out of me when people say that is disgusting then they have there own collection of something you feel makes no sense either.
Was little nervous back in the day but then i said to my self i don’t judge people who collect cards games sneakers watches an if any of my friends or females im into judge me off my gambit figure then i dont need you in my life. 😂😂
Love collecting toys. My wife supports my hobby. She’s happy I don’t live my old life of getting into trouble and drinking. Having my son just unlocked the nostalgia in me. That’s when I started getting into toys. There are stereotypes in every hobby, but collecting always has the stigma that you’re childish for liking toys. Mike Tyson and Anderson Silva are huge toy collectors, don’t see anyone calling them childish lol.
I used to heavily collect vintage toys. Had a giant collection spanning multiple lines, TMNT, Ghostbusters, Street Sharks, Godzilla, Power Rangers etc. for myself personally it became an extremely negative mark on my life. I prioritized it over my romantic relationships, and at times my financial responsibilities. Collecting can become insidious because you’re constantly chasing the dopamine hit. The real hobby becomes buying things instead of enjoying them. Before I knew it I had 7 detolfs and 4 5 shelf bookshelves meticulously filled with action figures and the rest of my life was baron. Toy collecting can be fun but be sure to audit yourself from time to time. I sold everything and completely moved away from the hobby.
Some of the biggest nerds I know are sports nerds. I had a cousin whose friends were all bro dudes who liked hockey and cars and never had any women around. I've never stopped collecting toys and have always had girlfriends and i play in a cool band haha
Not only am I an avid toy collector in my mid 40s that's in good shape, but I'm divorced with a kid I barely see. I'm one step away from being Mel Gibson's character in Lethal Weapon. You still think that's a nerd?!
Hell yes! This really sums it up for me as a dude that is collector and makes custom figures as a hobby. I also live alone with 2 cats and enjoy anime. Wait.....I think I figured out why I don't have a girlfriend...lol
You're hilarious!... Speaking the Truth With Facts Super alpha male Here. It is the truth that sometimes I would hide my hobby because people don't understand the hobby and it is also associated with kid or nerd behavior. But kids can't afford these action figures and even parents hesitate to buy an action figure price over $40 or $50 for their children. That's why it's called adult collecting . Adult signify that you're mature and know what you're doing. Thanks for this review. Like always positive reinforcement to the collector.
Yeah that’s what I say not hurting anyone and end of day have something to show from hobby unlike drinking and things like that. Just a heads up Hatter don’t know if it’s just the angle but is your street dio bending/bowing in middle that you have over your sewer? Wouldn’t want that great display to fall apart
I look like I carry amps for Metallica and talk like a market trader, I also collect vintage Care Bears. Stereotypes are bollocks. Hatter knows his shit.
What I've learned over many years is that you probably shouldn't tell people what bothers you. If collecting toys makes you happy, collect toys. If eating bologna sandwiches on crowded buses makes you happy, munch away. The worst thing you can do is respond to real or imagined criticisms, mostly because it almost never helps. It's also good to be humble and laugh at yourself. If you can admit that there are probably some aspects that appear or just are kinda weird the less upsetting criticism becomes. (edit: Don't become militant about a hobby. Seriously, don't. People who choose that route are lolcows and nobody wants to be a cow except for cowboys).
It depends on the point of view... I like to be exclusive! This is the way i see things, this hobby is not for everyone and thats what makes it feel special!
A lot of that stereotyping came from Hollywood and women in the dating scene. Some women run in the opposite direction without understanding the person or the hobby
I’m a toy collector but let’s be real. There’s a stereotype for a reason. Most Women want alpha males like James Bond or John Wayne. Can you picture Clint Eastwood excited about a new Leonardo figure? Lol. So I love my hobby and will continue to, but in the real world, especially old school version, collecting toys is kinda geeky lol. But hey, screw those people who say that and just do you. That’s what I’m doing 🤷🏻♂️
@@madhatterreviews6705 hope that’s true. I’m 48, 20 year nypd cop, consider myself the typical “man”. Love scotch and cigars, ufc, sports, etc, and I have 2 huge bedrooms of 80’s toys beautifully displayed and love my hobby. I date a lot and was even married, But every girl that has seen it was definitely turned off and thought something was mentally wrong with me lmao. But I own my hobby and love your channel bro. Alphas😂😂😂😂😂😂. If you have to think of yourself as an alpha, then you’re not. If you’re that obsessed with what man is an alpha or beta then you’re definitely not an alpha. Alpha never show that are are alpha, they just are.
Hatter, collecting is a hobby for me. It works. I have met fellow collectors and feel richer for the experience. I have interests in common with others enough to be part of a community. Am I a gig chad no but that has never been what I ever aspired to be. I know me and I like me loosly paraphrsed as the the line from Planes, Trains, and Automobiles( a quintessential Thanksgiving movie). Enjoy this hobby enjoy the fellowship, we are social creatures. We support creativity and the arts. We support the economy 😂😅. Lets go!!!✌️
Yeah, people who want to act weird about the idea of collecting action figures probably don't have a hobby of their own, or have no clue what a hobby is. If it's that deep to them, you'll be just fine not wasting your time trying to explain what you do to them or anyone else.
Collecting is in sync with our biological programming to forage for food. Hoarding is when there are things that are everyday items and objects that you don't need more than one of. Or food. Or animal waste. Yes, some collectors over do it, but I think its healthy to purge some things you don't want. I try to give away or sell old figures so I can enjoy new ones. Yes, its a fun hobby like collecting toy trains. Model cars. Stamps. Coins. Antique Guns. But there will always be a stigma synonymous with mental health. My partner was in my studio and she told me I was "sick" as she waved a hand at me with bent witch-like fingers... And she was adamant about it.
Hey hatter ..living overseas and still watching your vids while smashing girls half my age! I still love buying toys! I just bought the Haslab Ghost for $300 (No Figures) off a seller by my house back home. Now i gotta get my nephew to pick it up for me! Im what you might consider a Passport Collector Bro!

Stereotypes exist for a reason, but I get what you're saying. I think the majority of toy collectors now don't fit that typical stereotype, although there are still A TON of them/us in our hobby. Female toy collectors are out there. They just collect dolls and plushies and other types of toys that aren't action figures.
Also I can 100% see Mad Hatter being shoved in a locker. 😀Cheers to 2025 Brother. 🥂 Your channel is awesome. Can't wait for Flippor and to see where you take the channel. Love your humor and positivity.
@@NickDoobs😂😂 that locker better be made out of adamantium!! Thanks bud, happy new year
So tru Hatter 👍🏾 happy New year 🎊🎉🎇🎆👋🏾 from the Nederlandse
FACTS HATTER!!!!!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR MY GUY.
Preach on MH! Happy 2025, do what makes you happy.
I’m not sure if you did it on purpose, but I can see the blinds reflecting off your toy case. It almost looks like the ghost of the vent has returned!
+1 for BBT hate. True nerds rise up!
Was little nervous back in the day but then i said to my self i don’t judge people who collect cards games sneakers watches an if any of my friends or females im into judge me off my gambit figure then i dont need you in my life. 😂😂
What do we do if we are the stereotype???
You enjoy your life buddy! You do you! ❤️❤️❤️
@@madhatterreviews6705 I'm sorry for making the hobby look bad MadHatter. 😞
Flip-Or👍
I used to heavily collect vintage toys.
Hahaha wow
Well you’re divorced so……….and you don’t get to see your child so……….
Hell yes! This really sums it up for me as a dude that is collector and makes custom figures as a hobby. I also live alone with 2 cats and enjoy anime. Wait.....I think I figured out why I don't have a girlfriend...lol
Yep 👍
You're hilarious!... Speaking the Truth With Facts Super alpha male Here. It is the truth that sometimes I would hide my hobby because people don't understand the hobby and it is also associated with kid or nerd behavior. But kids can't afford these action figures and even parents hesitate to buy an action figure price over $40 or $50 for their children. That's why it's called adult collecting . Adult signify that you're mature and know what you're doing. Thanks for this review. Like always positive reinforcement to the collector.
You’re a super alpha male????😂😂😂😂. You’re not even a beta😂😂😂😂.
Yeah Diddy collected toys too and we know how that turned out! 😂 jk
He collected lube lol
Whatever your flavor is lol, amazing line 😂🤘
Preach!
Ok , taxidermy is more atracative than almost everything lmao ! ? WTF , this list cant be serious.
I myself, 1.Collect toys
2.Drink too much
Yeah that’s what I say not hurting anyone and end of day have something to show from hobby unlike drinking and things like that.
You look like your men carry amps for Metallica??? You mean you look like a roadie? 😂😂😂😂😂.
@@masonj4779 yes. yes I do.
As an avid collector and a cyclist….😂
Champions of Nefarity - Lockerfist confirmed. 🎉🥳
I'm over 40 not a virgin got 5 kids but don't drink or do drugs I collect figures and the wife don't mind keeps me quiet apparently lol.
It depends on the point of view... I like to be exclusive! This is the way i see things, this hobby is not for everyone and thats what makes it feel special!
we only live once, do whatever makes you happy
A lot of that stereotyping came from Hollywood and women in the dating scene. Some women run in the opposite direction without understanding the person or the hobby
Mad Hatter 😂😂😂😂❤
Hey you're a Hollywood dude, fix it man :)
That’s the past dude, it’s opened up. I’ve known a lot of really hard ass military guys that collect action figures because it makes them happy
All this "alpha" and "beta" crap has as much credibility as Astrology.
Collectors unite!
What about Henry cavil playing war hammer
Hey I’m one of the retired hard ass military dudes and I love my turtles it makes me happy
Lol I agree but, I think you chose the wrong scene. Women generally will act weird if they walk into a room with my Marvel Legends display 🤣🤣
Amen to that big bang theory garbage, I hate it for the same reason. It is the definition of “cringe”
Worst show ever made. Not funny at all.
Hatter Nation 🎩 🙌
2025 the year of the TOY! I just started my RUclips Toy adventure to bring that Alpha energy. WOOF WOOF!!!!
Reverse psychology on those normies.
Alphas are the new Toy Collectors and Toy Collectors are the new Alphas. I couldn't agree more. Awesome statement 👏👏👏
Only in your mind
As long as it's the right frame of mind 😂
@@MichaelOMahony-n2q 😄
Lets go!!!✌️
Resolutions usually last til like January 12th or so, so they are pretty much destined to fail, but good on ya for trying. 💯
The world will change by January 12 mark my words!
Make it so buddy. 💪
Yeah, people who want to act weird about the idea of collecting action figures probably don't have a hobby of their own, or have no clue what a hobby is. If it's that deep to them, you'll be just fine not wasting your time trying to explain what you do to them or anyone else.
There was a time I was a cyclist and doing triathlons and playing video games
