Hello, I am from Mexico and I am currently reading The Read Pony by Steinbeck. I had trouble to understand a description about drinking coffee out of the saucer -one of the character did in the novel- then I had to run into youtube and here I had the answer!! Thanks a lot.

These are great stories. I wish I could have filmed my dad telling some of his stories before he passed so that I could replay them and remember them easier.

My Great Grandparents did this. I watched them drink from a saucer every time. They were born in the 1890’s. This was in northeastern Oklahoma in the Ozarks.

My great grandfather would drink his coffee like this as well, with a cube of sugar between his front teeth. It used to be common practice here in Sweden.

He sounds like a Texas! Am I right? We were looking up WHY people would saucer their coffee in the old days and came upon this sweet video of grandpa!

This is actually the proper way to use a saucer and was considered polite in the olden days my grandmother used to do with her tea and I still do it today and have taught my daughter the same technique 💙

    CUP AND SAUCERS
Like with the ubiquitous ties and mugs which are the staple gifts at Father’s Day appreciation functions and in homes and Church because they are inexpensive and practical (it’s the thought that counts); I happened on an Indian drama series where I saw a rich woman sipping tea from her saucer. Turns out this is not bourgeois behaviour but a cultural and historical way to cool tea. In deference to Dubai’s gold cup and saucers we are all precious vessels for GOD and the servants to others. As such let your cup overflow today to the saucer with His love.

I read about drinking coffee from the saucer in the book Little Farmer Boy. I had never heard of it before and had to search the web to see if anybody else heard of this.

If I were to do this in my household I would be told I’m being messy and rude.

It makes sense, if it's been boiled on a stove or fire.
