I'm mostly just really concerned about this guy's physical health.
The panting and heavy breathing is because its based on the Developer Matt Gilgenbach own asthma

The teeth...perhaps Freudian symbolism (castration anxiety, general anxiety, fear of either loosing power or problems coming to terms with an actual state of powerlessness, or fear of growing up and/or maturing - including it's physical aspects.) And this is a dream, so "Traumdeutung" seems to be a good way to go?
Another thing is the frequent "descending stairs"-motive. This may symbolise exploring/ discovering the unconscious and suppressed memories - everytime you descend some stairs, the house gets more and more grody.
It may also be a reference to the short story "Berenice" by Edgar Allan Poe - especially since the game seems to be set in the 19th century. In this story a man falls in love with a relative (his cousin) and starts to fetishize her immaculate teeth. The lines between fantasy and reality begin to blur, and eventually he imagines her succumbing to an illness upon which he disturbs her grave - to collect her teeth. And that isn't even the most gruesome stuff - in the end it turns out that she's stll alive...but now missing her teeth.
So I think there is a strong sexual subtext going on (based on both the "tooth loss"-symbolism and the possible reference to "Berenice"). Maybe he had intercourse with his sister and their parents found out? Maybe his sister and one point refused his advances and he killed her out of jealousy?
Another theme going on may be abuse inside of the family over generations. There are pictures of stern looking men in uniform (of violence) all around the house (as well as predatory birds, battered dolls and meat in all variations) and one of the pictures shows a man with bottles of liquor - alcohol abuse?
Maybe the father molested/abused the sister and our protagonist wasn't brave enough to interfere and now feels guilty about her eventual death?
Also, as you've mentioned, he's possibly a cuckold child. (He's the only one with blond hair) and that may be of concern too.
Worth noting the extremely heavy inspiration by Edward Gorey's works not just in art style, but also the whole idea of depression, since Edward Gorey himself was known to never see anything "pleasant" in the world, and said himself that he never saw anything happy in visual art or music.
I do wonder if this game will also end up following a "literary nonsense" narrative that Gorey's works usually did.

Hi Red Hua!! Very insightful! Wonder if game dev used this style for that express purpose. I think the use of literary nonsense definitely applies to the “monsters” as representations of mental illness. Like the giant muscled deformed thing with a baby head - in a mawashi, no less! At first I thought perhaps it symbolized a real baby, but the more I thought about it, the more I realized it was a nonsensical "gibberish" thing. But a monster nonetheless.
I appreciate the dev’s portrayal of his personal history of mental & physical disorders within the game. I’ll be anxious to see if there is an actual narrative to the game or will it just be an exercise in atmospheric art depicting illness. ^w^
Red Hua I'd like to think Gorey would enjoy this game and it's adaption of his art style. It's well done and certainly fits his narrative.
The plotline, insofar as it exists, does come close to nonsense. Glad it does, because that suits the whole style of the game.

the gross stuff that he "dreams" of, like the vein is... kind of like invasive thoughts isn't it?
the style of this game really creeps me out. not sure why. I find it hard to look at at times!

Shadowy hallways of the mind, decorated with increasingly decrepit wallpaper, morbid paintings, deformed dolls, & a grandfather clock chiming the hour with a beheading. Blood & disfigurement & monsters. All the scary imagery you might want in a film - not your home. It's something that you hope to never experience - the real horror of the inside of an illness. Perfect for October. ^w^
Perfect October. Where the souls wander off aimlessly and with no end. That be creepy considering that your whole house is now a Scandinavian Death Trap.

So this is an old video but I've tried to watch playthroughs of this game before and I can never quite get past the... arm thing. But watching this really helped and I was also able to cover my eyes in time haha :-) thank you for being a helpful horror companion manly!!
Sometimes you can dream of losing your teeths, it's something common i think in the realm of dreams and nightmares.
For me, it happend once and they were falling from my mouth xd and while searching for the meaning of that on google i saw i wasn't the only one who had this type of dream.
Sorry I know this is a 6yr old comment but this is 100% common. Think everyone I've ever talked to about dreams has had it. I've had it where I look in the mirror, my teeth just dissolve, or crack into small pieces. I'm not sure what it means, but given that I've had that dream more than once, it must be something!

I admit, the "pulling out my vein while screaming" scene made me cringe.

I dislike dolls, too. I work in the back of a small toystore stocking inventory which unfortunately means.. Unboxing and pricing dolls. Ugh..

***** I believe it was when he spun the night at his grandmother's or aunt's home in a room full of dolls that stared at him all night long. That was mentioned in one of his videos. Which one, I have no clue. I have a good memory, but not that good of a memory.

***** The listless eyes of unmoving dolls. They stare into your soul with their dead eyes. A child's mind will go on an imaginative horror walk with the dolls. It is not very fun. Especially since the dolls keep staring at you unblinking. It feels as if their eyes are trained in on you even though they only stare straight ahead. Unnerving, really. Imagine a room full of those dolls. The feeling of a thousand eyes watching you as you try to fall asleep makes them extremely unsettling.
***** You should check out the short animation "Alma" on youtube. It's about dolls too.

I've been watching a few different LPers playing this game, and I can't believe I've been consistently missing it until now, the blocks at 8:00 spell out Murder. Gonna have to keep a closer eye on this one, to see if there's anything more I missed. Or, a less close eye, since I only noticed the blocks because I was focusing on Manly's voice, and not the screen, so I saw it out of the corner of my eye.
Jaysus, I feel you on the strong fear/dislike for dolls... but I kinda wonder what happened to remind you of a certain event in your life. By no means are you obligated to tell me, I'm just the kinda person who gets intrigued when things are left vague.

Somehow i think that the man impregnated his sister who was about to be married, then killed her or something. Would explain the baby, dolls in wedding gowns and dead girls haha. I also think i am taking this game too literally.

Thy enemy, stairs, have come to step on thy puns. The stairs mock thee with their straightforward yet twisting nature. Even the pine wood floors break in anticipation at hindering thy progress.
And do not even forget the ladders. For they be nature's most horrid of all foes.

This game is just so creepy and twisted I love it. Even creepier the fact that this could actually happen to someone.
I got to wonder though...is it really possible to put out your vein out of your arm like that?
Realistically, never. As one currently studying medicine, your veins and arteries are too skinny to pull out. You'd have to aim for your aorta coming out of your heart or the pulmonary trunk in your femur. They're the largest in your body.

I guess we can assume they're vivid hallucinations or nightmares. I think certain forms of psychosis can give you awful vivid visions just like this.

I’m watching this in the middle of the night
its certainly a unique game i'll give it that, not something i'd consider buying but interesting nontheless.. props to the creators tho as i don't think a game designed with free hand drawing style graphics has ever been done before, thats damn impressive.

Recessive-gene induced phenotype - as long as both parents are mixed carriers of the recessive gene (i.e. 1 dominant black responsible for their own phenotype expression and 1 recessive blonde which doesn't express).
There's a (wildly simplified) breakdown as follows:
25% chance of an offspring having blonde hair
25% the recessive gene is no longer passed down by future offspring (i.e. 2 inherited dominant black hair genes)
50% of a dominant black/recessive blonde for future offspring.
As such, entirely possible for 2 black-haired parents to have a blonde child as phenotype expression is what's observed, not specific genetic combinations, though its only a 25% of occurring.
(Note: Am chemist, not biologist - but i *think* that's what I remember of Punnitt Squares, etc. during undergrad biology)
