      lady o you’re also forgetting or to stupid to realize this woman’s already lost her job at Uber as sleeping in your vehicle is 100% against company policy. If you don’t have a residence Uber will fire you and if they find out you’re sleeping in your car multiple days a month you will be fired. Glad you think you can manipulate a company and not follow any policies and do whatever you want but that’s not how the world works.

And WHAT iss she doing about hygiene and bathing and brushing her teeth for several days??? It is not safe to be sleeping in your car especially in SF and being a FEMALE!! It also does not appear she is getting enough exercize. She is probably at risk for diabetes and high blood pressure. What is she doing about eat nutritionally correct for food?? And she does not have a regular sleep cycle. SURELY there is smarter, safer way for her to get a job. I get she does not want to sit at a desk...but stilll..

      @Bina Walburn Exactly! None of this makes any sense. At this rate she will work herself into an early grave, either by getting into an accident from working without sufficient rest, picking up strange people and sleeping in her damn car in public. She bought into the Uber propaganda about being autonomous in her work environment while still earning a good wage. She needs to realize that it isn't worth working for Uber. She was better off working in the call center. I think the people who applaud her are mistaking being hard working for being desperate.

      Rachel Smith How are you able to judge whether she's making good money or not? I didn't hear anything about how much she makes; just $50/hr. during rush hours. How much is she making at other times? What are her vehicle costs? The IRS mileage allotment for 2018 is $0.545/mile. I don't believe she's making much money; else she wouldn't live in Stockton, while driving in SF. If she made decent money she could at least afford to live closer.

    • @Pheckphul1
      @Pheckphul1 6 лет назад +2

      With respect to your comment about what your dad makes as an Uber driver, that is irrelevant, and has no bearing on what this person is making. Where is he a driver, and what does he consider "good money?" If person were making "good money" she could afford to live closer to SF (go re-read my comment, I said "live closer," not IN SF); she wouldn't be spending the weekdays away from her children and sleep/live in her car. If she were making "good money," she could afford to live at least in the East Bay and be an easy commute from SF.
      As for not living in SF were you a "billionaire;" SF has indeed seen better days, and gentrification is a problem for low-income individuals. And again, your statement is subjective, and has no bearing on this unfortunate mother who is no doubt spending so much time away from her family because of her income. However, I'd be interested to know where you live in order to compare how living in SF as a billionaire would compare. Additionally, what experience do you have with SF that gives you this opinion?

    • @savannahmoore8084
      @savannahmoore8084 6 лет назад +7

      Maybe she DOESNT want to move to SF? It doesn't sound like she's complaining she seems like she enjoys what she does. And obviously works in that areas because that's where she makes more money. Kids or not, she's a hard worker nothing wrong with sleeping in your car for a few days. She ain't going hungry? She ain't cold? And after a few days away she goes back home and has a break. I thought that was normal 🤷🏽‍♀️ I see normal cab drivers sleep in their cars outside their cab station waiting for customers all the time 😂 she also decides when she wants to nap. When she wants to eat. When she wants to work. Everybody just wanna be a lazy House wife . Go get your hands dirty 🤷🏽‍♀️

    She's probably making the most you can make driving for Uber. In SF the prices are the highest in the country, and she's driving during peak hours, and using a hybrid vehicle. She's an Uber MVP. I think if Uber allowed tips, she'd probably be able to cut significant hours off her shifts.

      John Doe yeah which is what they should do, or would you rather a sleep deprived uber driver cross the divider and hit a bus full of kids or cross the line in front of a 18 wheeler on highway, when they nodded off because uber doesn't limit the driving hours, like every other self respecting company does to their drivers on the road. Or maybe just crash into a retaining wall and kill the passengers.
      To graphic? We solved this major issue once with logs for long haul drivers. If people can't honestly see this becoming a issue because these are smaller cars, that's a super dense thought process.
      In NYC every driver I have already has Uber, lyft, and 1/2 more always running. A time restraint on uber would not even be a issue, they would just run them staggered like that are already doing and literately drive all night. Even Yellow cab drivers are also running lyft/uber on the side.

      mario barrera great idea, and Uber should make your suggestion ideal, like make it happen, and Uber should pay for the hotels, because if she isn’t making so much money, (but they must be, and don’t care how many hours she drives, wanting to compete, and maybe wanting to be the best competitor, who is winning financially,) and she is using her car, and has to care for the maintenance on it. People need to share more of the wealth.

    Lyft locks drivers out of their account for a reason. Driving drowsy is just as bad as driving drunk. And uber also has regulations for hours in a day that a driver can be online, and drivers can randomly be fined heavily for going over that time. They fail to mention this in their contract so drivers don't know until they're charged the fine ($500 minimum)..I hope that someone tells this woman so that she doesn't have to go through that.

    • @wezarr7825
      @wezarr7825 7 лет назад +27

      Uber is becoming a monopoly, destroying independent taxi companies, it's unfair competition for taxi companies who have to obey to certain rules where uber doesn't. May be good for some people who need money, but it's not good for the economy, because a monopoly can raise their price when they want because of the lack of competition 'they can get control over that certain market'.
      What if you had a company and theirs not a single competitor, well you would probably sell you product for a highest price, competition avoids that from happening.

      Maybe you need to consider the following: many insurance companies will drop policies when they find out their customers have driven for either uber or lyft. The wear and tear on a vehicle is significant. The safety is questionable. These companies assume zero risk and put it on the backs of their employees.

    Not sure what the problem is, she's making $50/hour as the video says, so if she works an 8 hour day she just cleared $400. She can definitely afford a motel if she wants, but if she goes into the city Friday and gets back monday, she makes $1600 in a week working 4 days, her own schedule. This lady could be clearing 70k a year working 4 days a week. I don't get why Vice is trying to make it seem like she's miserable/poor. She's smart, manages her time and finances very well.
    I drive for lyft/Uber in a small city and I'm making $15-$20/hr after expenses and I get to make my own schedule.
    Is uber making a shit ton of money off of her? Yes.
    Is she making good money and happy with her life? Yes.

    • @YearOfTheDog82
      @YearOfTheDog82 6 лет назад +94

      she is only making $50/hour during the high demand Surges. When I drove for Uber, surge pricing only lasted 35-45 minutes per day in my area. The rest of the day I was averaging $13-$17/hour.
      Keep in mind that does not include gas, maintenance, or insurance.
      In the end, it wasnt worth it, and I no longer drive for Uber or Lyft

    • @BillAnt

      $55 is BS, more like $10/hour after you factor in the cost of the car, gas, maintenance, insurance, food, etc. you're left with peanuts. Literally just enough to buy a bag of peanuts! Uber simply exploits the masses of unskilled people for their own benefit, especially when their CEO is taking multi-million bonuses, they could definitely afford to share a bit of their profit.

      Being a partner at a law firm isn’t bad until you realize you have to buy suits, a nice car, get your haircut frequently, etc. See how that makes no sense? Find me a job that pays well that doesn’t involve paying for things. Tradesmen buy tools, which is just one thing but someone like you seems like you wouldn’t understand how much those cost. Mechanics usually end up paying for about 40-60K in tools while making 35-45K in their first year of their careers. Uber is not the most expensive job one has to use their own money to pay for their tools, and $50 an hour is not bad at all.

    I spent the summer of 2017 working with a labor union in the Bay Area and meeting Uber and Lyft drivers to discuss the realities of their jobs. Terri seems so sweet and a lot of drivers were upbeat on the surface, but once we dug into their stories it was heartbreaking. Since Uber/Lyft drivers are independent contractors, their income is inconsistent and under the minimum wage once you factor in gas prices and wear and tear on the car. Uber/Lyft takes 25% on top of that. Full-time drivers are sleeping in their cars all the time because they need to be on the app/in the queue when there is the highest demand, like during rush hour. Most of the drivers I talked to wait in designated parking lots near the airports to pick up rides. It really isn't a glamorous job, so many drivers are frustrated. The corporations that have pioneered this gig economy are exactly at the root of the problem in making San Francisco unaffordable, and they only see their drivers as labor to profit off of. If you must use Uber/Lyft, be kind and respectful to your driver and give them a good tip.

      I disagree. The corporations behind this gig economy are not at the root of the problem. It's the capitalist system. Overworked, underpaid workers in all blue collar industries is a rampant, inescapable feature of capitalism. From Walmart workers to Amazon warehouse workers to construction laborers to Uber drivers.
      They tell us only highly educated and trained workers can have comfort and stability as if it's a permanent law of nature that we have to accept. But that's not true, we can all have the comfort and stability we all deserve if the system wasn't set up for the rich to get richer off of our labor.

      A Google User that's a myth. I've had my Cdl for seven years and four of those were spent making next to nothing. Once you graduate from trucking school you are basically forced to work for slave wages for a year or two while insurance companies and prospective employers "evaluate" you as a driver. If you can make it past to first 365-730 days of life on the road making 20000-40000 a year, you may be able to find better opportunities that keep you closer to home and pay more. However this is assuming you've had no accidents or issues during your first couple of years and that you're willing to take on the tasks of labor (loading, unloading, tie loads etc) which most OTR drivers don't do. Make no mistake trucking is a last ditch effort type of job and more often than not has very little financial reward, especially if you live in expensive places like California or New York...

      A Google User sure there are always stories about lucky ones or people with "an in" but the majority of new truckers have to run through the mills just like everyone else make nothing for a couple years and work their way up the ranks. Trucking particularly OTR is just about the most challenging to least rewarding job there is. As a trucker you should at least be aware of this already

      Do you think it's possible for a rookie driver to achieve 50-70k+ OTR in his first 1-2 years if he used little to no home time throughout the year?
      I want to stack cash by living in a company truck and using my parents home as my rent/tax-free permanent address. My goal is to earn at least 50k yearly while spending less than $1000 monthly in total bills. (I might sell my car to save even more)
      Even if it's not possible for a rookie... the fact that it can be done with experience means I'm not quitting if I don't meet my goal, but I would feel cheated.

    $50/hour minimum during morning rush (4:30-8:30) & evening rush (4:00-8:00) = $83,000 per year. she has awful hours, but she seems to be making a very decent living. why is she being framed as someone who's in a bad spot because she sleeps in her car while she's not working? she doesn't live in the car. she's just taking naps during her breaks. we've all done that.

      She smart, using the car for residence, and packed food help her save tons of money, well generally smart, for sure at least. Doing this in japan could be sweet. Go eat ramen and nap in unisex hot springs, then make rush hour yens.

      yeah i agree we ALL take naps for 5 days straight in our car every single week

      What about car expenses (gas, insurance, maintenance)?
      She doesn't sleep with her family most of the week. This doesn't sound human to me. She isn't socializing most of the week except for small talks with clients. Maybe that's better than other options she has, but I'm not believing that is a standard of a decent job in a modern society.

      even worse if you take into account the car depreciation.

      I try not look at these things only through the prism of money. Spending time with your family and socialzing with other people is not substitutionable by money in my opinion.

    This lady make it sounds like it is a sad situation almost like she is homeless. Get on her level instead of trying to make her feel miserable! The truth is, she is making almost 3 times the amount that a retail associate or McDonald's employee would make. (Don't even get me started with history hmmm... ) I don't know what was that about! She is a smart hustler! Yes it is hard, but, she chose that path because that gives her freedom to do whatever she wants whenever she wants! She doesn't have a boss controlling her life nor her money.
    I resper this woman Uber driver. I would give her a $5milion check If I had it!
    Thanks guys for taking the time to read...
    I really had to say something:)

      FearlessDANIA Uber acts like a boss in every respect except for scheduling. We don't set rates. As a boss we could set prices but we can't.

      FearlessDANIA Being an Uber driver is not easy, you need a car, you need insurance the car needs repairs and you also need gas, none of these are cheap
