  • The diode used in this video was purchased from Jaycar and is this one right here: www.jaycar.com...
Hey folks, this is a quick one to show you how to install a blocking diode to your Ebay solar panel. Some dearer panels may have one in them already, or may require a controller that prevents this problem. But the cheap ones generally don't.
What's a blocking diode, and why do you need one?? Simply put, they're an electrical version of a one way valve. And they will stop voltage draining out of your battery back to your solar panel.
Anyway, this is a simple modification, at very low cost.
As always, whenever carrying out electrical work on your car you do so at your own risk. This video is for information purposes only and i cannot be held responsible for any damages as a result of anyone attempting to replicate what was done in this video.
Any questions feel free to ask.

You have explained more in 1 video than I have watched in days! Well done.

I use blocking diodes because of my setup.. i have two 20Wp panels connected in parallel so i put one diode on each panel + terminal so the electricity would not flow from one panel to the other.. it just gaves me 50-70% more power and the diodes i use? 1N5822.. 40V, 3A, 0.5V voltage drop. Noice, cheap and durable..

Hello, I am running DC fan with 12v adapter. Now I want to connect a 100w solar panel to the same fan. The problem is of course if during night I run through adapter, it will also feed solar panel if someone forgot to switch off the solar line and vice versa. During the day if solar panel is running the fan and someone turns on 12v adapter that's connected to the mains, I am not sure which power fan shall be drawing, solar or mains?
I got Chinese 10A diodes also referred to Schottky diodes but it would become super hot. Someone told me these are actually 5A diodes but marked 10A. Therefore I soldered 3 diodes together and should I put in the positive wire as you did but close to the panel or close to the fan? In addition, similar diodes should be also connected to 12v DC adapter's output positive wire?
I don't think heat shrink would cover 3 diodes soldered together. I am thinking of a hack to make housing for the diodes. Any suggestions welcome.

I am using 150 watt solar panel with 300 watt buck converter When I use 2 amp diode for blocking it heat too much ,I tried combining two plus one amp diode but still heat too much any advise .( my panel generate only 2 ampere to 2.5 amp max but still diodes are producing too much heat)

Hmmm, not too sure on that one sorry, haven't done any work with the bigger solar setups yet.

Measuring a voltage does not mean there is a relevant current.

Hi, does the back flow occur if you are using an mppt charge controller?

From what i've read, if it's set up properly, an MPPT controller should prevent backflow yes.

I have this problem on several setups with cheap ebay charge controllers.
      I belive they are PWM.
Would it be better for me to connect the diode between the charge controller and the battery rather then between panel and charge controller?
Im only using cheap cheap ebay stuff. Its to have a small light in a outdoor shed im only into for 30 seconds now and then.

WHAT TYPE OF DIODE DO YOU USE..?

Surely somebody makes a USB male to female that I can throw in line that has the diode in it right? Yes, I’m asking for the easier and more expensive way.

Pretty much a waste of time and money, the only solar panels I've seen with blocking diodes are ones with 32 cells which pretty much can't over charge a lead acid battery and designed to connect direct to a battery.
Any charge controller will not allow discharging...
...and you shouldn't connect a panel to a battery without one.
BTW - the diodes that aren't blocking are bypass diodes.

Wrong. Believe me...China doesn't care. Wrong.
