Tommy Burns - Was a Canadian professional boxer who is the only Canadian-born world Heavyweight boxing champion. The first to travel the globe in defending his title, Burns made 13 title defences against 11 different boxers, despite often being the underdog due to his size. Burns took on all challengers as Heavyweight Champion, leading to his legendary bout with the African American Jack Johnson. According to his biographer, Burns insisted, "I will defend my title against all comers, none barred. By this I mean white, black, Mexican, Indian, or any other nationality. I propose to be the champion of the world, not the white, or the Canadian, or the American. If I am not the best man in the heavyweight division, I don't want the title."

The shortest Heavyweight champion in boxing history! Standing at only 5'7, Tommy Burns certainly had the odds stacked against him in his quest to become Heavyweight champ but he did just that when he defeated Marvin Hart on points over 20 rounds. He successfully defended his crown 13 times before losing it to the legendary Jack Johnson. Although Burns is mostly remembered for the loss to Johnson, he was a far better fighter than many people give him credit for today. His most famous quote was "I will defend my title against all comers, none barred. By this I mean white, black, Mexican, Indian, or any other nationality. I propose to be the champion of the world, not the white, or the Canadian, or the American. If I am not the best man in the Heavyweight division, I don't want the title." www.patreon.com/haNZAgod
Great and wise words...very underrated "champion"...and a great footwork by this film 👍👍❤❤🔥🔥🥊🥊

Honor
A true fighter who showed the sport what an honourable fighter is. Now we mostly get guys avoiding each other but bragging about spar stories from a decade ago and social media divas cherry picking opponents.

Amazing quote
@@guidooctavio3982 Amazing quote, thinking at the time it was said.
This is the first time I’ve ever seen Good Tommy Burns footage other than the Johnson fight. He had a reputation amongst boxing literature as being one of the most Unremarkable of the heavyweight champions in boxing history in the books I’ve read. This footage shows this is CLEARLY not the case. He had a hands down chin up stance (as a lot of fighters had in the time period ) BUT he looks to have had a ‘Soviet style’ in and out type footwork, quick work rate, very balanced and a sneaky right cross which he’d throw multiple times by shifting this multiplying the power (similar to the Fitz shift except with the right hand instead of the left hook). Very little clinching unlike a lot of fighters of the time period and an exciting style. VERY underrated and Very under appreciated. Thank you for this rare and clear footage!
His style is killed or be killed, he keeps his hands down because everyone back then went to the body more but that doesn’t mean his defence was bad in anyway. Also fitzsimmons signature shot wasn’t a hook it was an uppercut to the solar plexus.
This man had 11 title defenses around the world! He is the smallest heavyweight champion ever, yes that is including Rocky Marciano. He should have actually been a middleweight but went up against actual light heavyweights and heavyweights and defended the title until Jack Johnson defeated him. I definitely give him his props and he's one of the most underrated heavyweight champions of all time! He was actually the first and last Canadian heavyweight champion of the world until Lennox Lewis as well.
@@mider-spanman5577 Tommy Burns wasn't a real Heavyweight. Just like Stanley Ketchel, Sam Langford etc etc. These guys were confident in their athleticism and skill to best men bigger than themselves.
Lennox wasn't Canadian
@@Bruins-vq5ey Lennox is a unicorn. A Canadian citizen, a British citizen, and a Jamaican citizen. Pick one. But I know what I have read. He was the first person who has citizenship under the Commonwealth to have held a world title in so long regardless.
@@mider-spanman5577Lennox only claimed a medal for Canada, then for the rest of his career he was British. He has Jamaican heritage yes but he’s not a citizen.
How wild old-school boxing was, they didn't have the perfect technique that boxers have now, but they had the heart to fight to the end and the courage to fight any opponent.
Larger gloves have contributed to altered technique. Besides just improvement with time.
@@ezsmith3765 not just the goves but also the ruleset, rounds and the actual canvas and shoes they wore.
This man was a BEAST for sure. That right hand was delivering BOMBS!
Easily the most underappreciated Heavyweight champion in boxing history
Excellent!
Great video mate, a man I know of but have not watched any fights of his that did not involve Papa Jack.
You really showed the skills of the man through your selction and editing. Respect.
This is what the art of boxing looks like without the modern nonsense (trying to please the media, restless fans and tv audience).
Burns had impressive footwork for a guy built like Canelo (roughly same height and same weight). Again great work.
Thanks bud glad you enjoyed it. Burns is definitely underrated that's for sure.
Power in both of those hands.......
Underrated. 5 ft 7 is wild for a heavyweight
Just curious, if he really bulks up so much to be eligible as heavyweight at only 5'7, isn't he going to be kinda slow? 🦥
As a 5'7 guy myself, I'd rather be more agile than bulk and focus on more mobility based activities.
Edit: btw am an Asian guy :D
His little self was beating everyone's azz to a bloody pulp, til Jack Johnson came along of course lol
Good job uploading the highlights of Tommy Burns. You know Burns and "The Toy Bulldog" Mickey Walker would be a great matchup between the little giants had they fought in the same era. Keep it up.
Odds were stacked against him because of height seemed like a pretty good fighter with a good right hand , too bad he mostly remembered for the Johnson fight .
Didn't know they have so much film on him ?
Don't know if he was racist but his famous quote is what an honorable champion would say , I'll try to find his fights on RUclips , real good job haNZAgod 🥊
Well said! Thanks bud.
Not a racist in the least
He had balls can say that much for sure
Tommy Burns was a great fighter who handled his own against actual Heavyweights. Jack Johnson besting Burns should be a clear indicator on how great Johnson was.
I like boxing early 1900s
He was a well conditioned clever pressure fighter from the little I know of him
Would he be a Heavyweight today? not even close but that makes it impressive to me
A brave, very brave man. Breaking the color bar was very courageous against Johnson. Sadly, being a brave is sometimes not enough to win
He's very underrated because of Johnson fight, but he was a very good fighter with powerful right hand and was brave enough to give black man a shot at the title
He was was a average fighter beating on weaker white opponents when he faced real competition in jack Johnson he was destroyed
Top!
Uno de mejores boxeadores de principio de siglo su reinado costo de once degensas victoriosas y ocho de ellas por ko
Dream bout. Burns vs Harry Greb
Little guy, massive hands.
Defended the heavyweight title 13 times before finally losing to Johnson. Amazing for a guy of his stature. Warrior
Before about the four minute mark, I almost wondered what year the jab was invented😂
Aka Noah Brusso
Great Boxeur
Wow...
He works a lot and well with his right hand. It is a rarity.
