    Tommy Burns - Was a Canadian professional boxer who is the only Canadian-born world Heavyweight boxing champion. The first to travel the globe in defending his title, Burns made 13 title defences against 11 different boxers, despite often being the underdog due to his size. Burns took on all challengers as Heavyweight Champion, leading to his legendary bout with the African American Jack Johnson. According to his biographer, Burns insisted, "I will defend my title against all comers, none barred. By this I mean white, black, Mexican, Indian, or any other nationality. I propose to be the champion of the world, not the white, or the Canadian, or the American. If I am not the best man in the heavyweight division, I don't want the title."

    The shortest Heavyweight champion in boxing history! Standing at only 5'7, Tommy Burns certainly had the odds stacked against him in his quest to become Heavyweight champ but he did just that when he defeated Marvin Hart on points over 20 rounds. He successfully defended his crown 13 times before losing it to the legendary Jack Johnson. Although Burns is mostly remembered for the loss to Johnson, he was a far better fighter than many people give him credit for today. His most famous quote was "I will defend my title against all comers, none barred. By this I mean white, black, Mexican, Indian, or any other nationality. I propose to be the champion of the world, not the white, or the Canadian, or the American. If I am not the best man in the Heavyweight division, I don't want the title." www.patreon.com/haNZAgod

    This is the first time I’ve ever seen Good Tommy Burns footage other than the Johnson fight. He had a reputation amongst boxing literature as being one of the most Unremarkable of the heavyweight champions in boxing history in the books I’ve read. This footage shows this is CLEARLY not the case. He had a hands down chin up stance (as a lot of fighters had in the time period ) BUT he looks to have had a ‘Soviet style’ in and out type footwork, quick work rate, very balanced and a sneaky right cross which he’d throw multiple times by shifting this multiplying the power (similar to the Fitz shift except with the right hand instead of the left hook). Very little clinching unlike a lot of fighters of the time period and an exciting style. VERY underrated and Very under appreciated. Thank you for this rare and clear footage!

    • @beans3158
      @beans3158 22 дня назад

      His style is killed or be killed, he keeps his hands down because everyone back then went to the body more but that doesn’t mean his defence was bad in anyway. Also fitzsimmons signature shot wasn’t a hook it was an uppercut to the solar plexus.

    This man had 11 title defenses around the world! He is the smallest heavyweight champion ever, yes that is including Rocky Marciano. He should have actually been a middleweight but went up against actual light heavyweights and heavyweights and defended the title until Jack Johnson defeated him. I definitely give him his props and he's one of the most underrated heavyweight champions of all time! He was actually the first and last Canadian heavyweight champion of the world until Lennox Lewis as well.

    You really showed the skills of the man through your selction and editing. Respect.
    This is what the art of boxing looks like without the modern nonsense (trying to please the media, restless fans and tv audience).
    Burns had impressive footwork for a guy built like Canelo (roughly same height and same weight). Again great work.
