I am 74 and Soc. Security is my only source of income. I live alone so cooking for one can be challenging sometimes. I visit my local food bank about once a month to stock up on things I would normally buy like pasta and tomato products, etc. It's been a game changer for me to stretch my limited income each month.

I am one of those people with a lot of food allergies or genetic food issues. Because i can not eat anything put in front of me i felt wrong making those around me eat with no choice. I tend to make a few different items and put in frig. Then when is time to eat i tell them their choices and make each person a plate of what they choose. At this moment i just fed my daughter her left over chicken tenders and some fries, used the air fryer for her food. My husband, i made a burrito from the salsa chicken i made in crock pot and fresh grated cheese. Meals are really easier for me this way because everything is ready to put together and warm up. For myself i warmed up some cabbage soup that i cooked in instant pot. What makes this great today was that my daughters food was left over from her going out with grandma (no cost to me). My husband food all came from a local pantry. My vegan soup was from a pop up food truck to anyone who showed up.
Typically all our meals come from food bank or a local pantry. Our food bank is a no access food bank so you have to go to the drive up locations around town during month to get Fresh Food Box ($20 value is what they claim. sometimes is less and sometimes is more). Your allowed to go to as many as you need which is a huge blessing for me.
My food budget is Zero $ for the month because we do not have it. Had a car break down causing missed work. This caused missed payments which lead to repo fees even though car never left our hands. Over $3,000 in repo fees. Crazy... car payment charged $200 each month we were late on payment. What this really meant was that until car is paid up to date on payments we had to pay another $200 on top of making the payment and trying to catch up. This month we are finally caught up. Now we have to pay off the two car repair bills which total $8,000. Took us 8 months to pay the other. I do see the end even though it means we have to keep eating out of pantry and fresh food boxes for another year.
I felt like we were sinking and no end in sight. Now that we can finally catch a breath i feel better.
Hang in there and i would say look at what you get. Some meals i do what i call as meal prep. We get 1 pound hamburger packages. I use half for spaghetti for husband and other half i make patties for hamburgers for my daughter. I sometimes get a 1.5 pound pack of chicken thigh or breast. I will use half to make a chicken alfredo in crock pot with noodles. i will make breaded chicken patties with other half. We get lots of potatoes in fresh box so i turn them into mashed potatoes and wedge fries. Now they can have chicken and mashed potatoes or chicken and wedges or chicken alfredo during week. I usually cook everything on one day and put in frig. My husband wont look for anything so i just use some dollar tree plastic containers to put meals together and he just has to warm it up. Another meal i make a lot, is chicken soup with potatoes or with noodles. I only pick up and get spaghetti noodles so it is only noodle i use in anything. :P
I think about what is liked with a meat and then choose meals for that meat. Hamburger - sloppy joe, chili, hamburgers, spaghetti, and meatballs. Then do i have what i need. BINGO you got meals for a few days.

You should put the tv stand on the wall you said you wanted to put the desk. Then put the whole sofa on the long wall with the other piece kind of in front of the window and then that will open up the walking space and you can put the chair there by the line of the wood floor and tile so it will recline. It will be much more functional and make the space look so much bigger. You’d also have room then too for the cubby kind of by the front door/under the window.

I've been stocking up so much that I've got two small freezers now and stackable containers in my kitchen that have small lights in them that are rechargeable, just like my cabinets. My second freezer is on my back porch in a small building that has space to put more containers for items that want hurt like paper good. My son that lives with me now that's disabled get a small amount of snap so we use that on top of my grocery allowance from my budget and work together to build this so that if anyone around us have a need we can now help them. Thank you for convincing me that there is nothing shameful about using a food pantry to supplement our meals. Hubby and I are retired and have plenty to care for ourselves, but unfortunately, due to unusual blood clots in his lungs, our 38 year old fully disabled son has had to move back home and things are really tight. He does get a minimal disability check, Medicare that covers almost nothing and requires a 65 minute drive both ways to the only doctor that takes this insurance and $20 a month (you read that correctly) in food stamps. We are needing to cut into our savings in order to cover the extra costs of his medical bills, food and general expenses. The food bank has been a lifesaver!

Been a home canner for 46 years. And I have always kept alot of food on hand. And believe me over those 46 years. They have really come in handy. Whether it was job loss or layoffs. Or just money was tight. It was nice not to have to worry about buying food. We had so much to choose from. So never feel like you are doing something wrong or weird having your stockpile. Be glad. We were all young, fairly transient, and moved a lot within a few miles. I knew how to double, triple stack stuff tightly in that truck and you could find me moving at least someone I knew, knew someone I knew, or knew someone who knew someone who knew me. I grew to hate to pack other than packing things on the truck although I could pack pretty tight; if you can see air or light coming through that was unused space.
One monumental Saturday we moved about a dozen people. We divided the work into pack and load, unload, and haul into places on a rotating basis as we went along. My goals were to get the truck loaded as high and tight as possible, get stuff transported and unloaded, and stuff inside.

However a two car accidents in five months took care of that! Then after being single for years God brought me an amazing husband and we have been married now over 14 years and I love my life now. My collection of food does comfort and assure me that everything is good. I am very good either way creating things in the kitchen and could not imagine life with a simple basic pantry. A few screws would hold the wall up. And since its a rental, it could be quickly and easily taken down. Yall could have the kids area in the house living are and yall could have a bigger space in the garage. You could even make your living room area a bigger dining area or a place with a desk for homework or whatever. The possibilities are endless when you have a garage lol.

First of all, your pantry looks awesome!! Very organized. Second, Food insecurity is real.
My wife and I volunteer 2-3 days a week at St. Vincent's de Paul and a few times a month at St. Marie's food banks. I'm not the final "say all" and there might be some people that disagree but there is nothing wrong with storing some of the food you get from food banks.
We work very hard not to run out of basic foods but it does happen once in a while.(Usually from a truck that broke down bringing it to the food bank.) But even with a justifiable reason, that still doesn't feed a hungry person. What happens if you and your family gets really sick and can't get to the food banks? If you have food stored then it isn't as a catastrophic event as it could be. You are smart for preparing for such events.
God bless you and your family!

I have recently taken a break from the food banks. I have plenty of storage and I do live alone. I concentrate on using up the food that I have and I rotate my food stores routinely. When I do shop I only buy perishables like produce, eggs, cheese, milk, etc. I was grateful for the food banks and I do know that if I ever need them I can go back to them. Sorry about the loss of your Mom.

We had an abundance of cherry tomatoes. So found a new favorite. Always keep a running list of ideas for meal, rarely shop, only pick up what I need to complete meals, dairy, produce and really good sales. 😊

@@mamabairds Honestly, consider it. All it takes is two people/ families, each with a project of some sort in mind. Or, someone who wants to learn better (or begin to learn) something another knows something about; sometimes simply learn how to do something while holding each other's instruction book. DO NOT use the words "barter" or "trade" while on an electronic device or on a land line; bartering and trading are taxable by the IRS and in least some income tax states.

The local food bank in my county sux big time.. took a friend there one time and they had molding vegetables and fruits in a refrigerator, the canned and boxed goods were expired or expired within a week or two. and the frozen chicken they gave her had a sell by date of July and it was November. Now if you went a county over you would get cart loads of food and they weren't expired.. but because she lived in another county she couldn't get anything from them ..

I do watch for sales at our local grocery stores and try to stock up if I have extra money after paying bills . My mom had taught me to stock up because she was raised up during the depression and had bad food Insecurities .When I cook for myself I cook enough for a couple of days and make homemade tv dinners and freeze them for a later date .

I remember in the early 2000's, my mom lost her job. Granted she did make a lot but the job loss did hit us hard. My financial & food insecurities stem from that.
I remember her & I were in line to check out at the grocery store & she had 2 big bills she had to pay. She looked at me & said "which bill should I pay first because I can't pay both & get groceries."
That's where my "extreme" couponing, matching the coupon with the sale & stocking up when there was both a coupon with the sale came from!

    Carolina,
Do have a cleaning party then perhaps you and your friends can get together once a month and take a couple of hours helping each other tackle a project in their homes. Also you need to replace the things you have in your pantry so you don't find yourself coming up short, there are other far reaching expenses with moving like double utilities with turn ons and turn oss services. Change of address with business, school, md's etc. Animal issues while they get used to new place so don't do any major changes right away give tourselves a minute to take all the changes in. Good lick.❤🎉❤🎉❤🎉
