    In regards to the Hooded Figure being Jace, one thing that makes a lot of sense for A: Why he's skulking around Ravnica in the shadows and B: why he goes digging around in Proft's mind is that he's trying to find Vraska, be it alive or just her body. Thus why he's spying on the Golgari and exploring the Undercity, and goes digging around in the mind of a detective with a photographic memory that may have seen some hint or clue that he has absolutely no idea he saw.

Vito and eriette were the villains of the last two sets, and before them, some of the highest profile villains in the story are elesh norn, Heliod, and Konda, and of course urza so even though we have plenty of nonwhite villains, white is at least as well represented as the other colors.
      I don't think that this is actually surprising from a writing perspective. As a foil to good, abuse of power is more interesting than stabbing grandmas and eating babies, especially if the complexity of magic stories is limited by the budget of a writing department that is clearly an afterthought

    Niv Mizzet not synergising with the ordinary citizens of Ravnica could be a brilliant piece of flavour, if you see it as symbolic of a divide between the guilds (and the literal Guildpact) and the lives of people who aren’t associated with guilds

    • @MagicArcanum
      @MagicArcanum  9 месяцев назад +9

      If he cared more about the guillds he should have shown up to investigate the guild leader's deaths. Plus, in the War of the Spark novels, there is a part where Niv Mizzet is fighting Nicol Bolas, and Bolas attacks some civilians as a distraction but Niv doesn't take the bait. He reminds himself he is responsible for the people of Ravnica in aggregate, so as long as he still saves "most of them" by defeating Bolas, he doesn't have to save individuals - but it is clear (to me at least) that he does care about the people of the plane and considers them to be his duty to watch out for (and this was even before he became the Guildpact).

  • @cis22
    @cis22 9 месяцев назад +9

    I think breaking Kellan's color pattern served some purposes.
    - He's in Ravnica so it's on-theme to be two colors, not just in color identity but really the actual colors of the spell/permanent. His Ixalan version combines adventure and map tokens to represent an Eldraine native visiting Ixalan. His Ravnica version combines adventure with two-color spells.
    - There is a cycle of rare legendary creatures for each color pair that don't necessarily need to be guild representatives so he fits in well in the Simic slot.
    - Maybe there are some draft balancing reasons as to why both his creature and adventure spells are strictly Simic instead of one green and one blue.

    New Capenna would make the same amount of sense, story wise, as Ravnica. Art style wise, it would have made more sense as the 1920's style art deco is leaned on. Guild leaders are being murdered on Ravnica. Family leaders are being murdered on New Capenna. A detective is as likely on either plane. Seeing how that plane operates in a "murder the heads of the family" plane would have been pretty great as well. Missed oppertunities, especially since they had just released Ravnica Remastered, unless their goal is to now release a legacy set and a standard set from the same plane back to back.

    Basic narrative structure would normally imply the hooded figure to either be Oko himself to to be elsewise connected to Oko, but we'll see how well that pans out. As for the ARG, I agree that the story should be 100% within standard avenues, but I have no issue with a little bonus for those who wish to engage beyond the normal. I'd hope it provides some tidbits as to what the next set may be, what plane is next, who the larger scope antagonist is, that sort of thing.

    The Planeswalker Guide that was released yesterday helps she’s some light on the other happenings on the plane since the invasion. Apparently, it’s been a whole year since the invasion to when we pick up the story now.
    What I didn’t like in the story, however, was how when Kellan and Kaya had moments to chitchat, Kellan was seemingly providing more information than what he should know about Ravnica and it’s people since the invasion happened. It’s been a year and we have to take account for Eldraine and Ixalan to happen. That all didn’t happen in back to back weeks, so adjusting for time, I would give him 3-4 months on Ravnica, 6 months tops. He still has to get acquainted with the new plane since arriving and then slowly work his way into a reputable spot in the Agency to start gathering potential intel on Oko. But he gives accounts of certain peoples personal thoughts and feelings about situations that happened. To me, that didn’t add up.
    Also, what happened to Amalia? Kaya asks Kellan about if he came with anyone and he shrugs her off like he didn’t just have a semi flirtatious relationship with her on Ixalan. I would have liked to see a card for her to at least show continuity of the story. Maybe she joined the Orzhov and met a devilishly handsome vampire among the guild. This left Kellan scorned and he devoted more of his time to the Agency trying to get information about his dad.

    • @dylanbeck8688
      @dylanbeck8688 9 месяцев назад +2

      I believe there is a line about Amalia potentially having joined the Gruul (or at least is hanging around their turf) because they easily have the most to discover archeologicaly. Kellan does say he checks in on her every so often but she's her own person with very different interests.

    Unless we see a new color for Kellan, I think it makes sense for him to end up being Simic due to Oko being blue/green. So it could be that he's almost to the end of his arc. However, I love 5 color commanders and would love to see a 5 color Kellan from all of his journeys. I think it would be cool to see the first creature have multiple adventure costs, a Kenrith of Adventure if you will. It won't happen, I doubt we'll get that for quite some time, but a man can dream!

      @@h.g.5509 I would play the first one, I love equipment decks! The new simic one is also pretty solid, though. At least for my playstyles, I think the one released in Ixalan was the worst because Maps were underwhelming AND it's heavily dependent on having multiple opponents.
      To go on a rant: I just feel like Kellan, Daring Traveler wasn't built to be a commander. It's white/green and is almost a graveyard matters deck. I know that was the theme of Ixalan, but outside of the set specifically there's just not enough support to really make him shine. I was thoroughly disappointed in Ixalan's Kellan in all forms. The story was kinda meh, the art wasn't great for his special version, his abilities were mid, he just wasn't great.

    The pollen probably just says to kill them in your own way and the dimir assassin just has more skills to bring to bear. When Jace left Elesh Norn's side I'll bet it was to attack Niv Mizzet and I imagine we'll find out how that went later and it was too big for this story. Thanks for the recap, I really appreciate your videos as they allow me to keep up with an otherwise hard to find story.

      Despite being connected physically, the sisters do appear to maintain some amount of autonomy. Oba was able to absorb a lot of Worldbreaker's dark influence, hoping to spare her sisters from having to endure such pain and suffering, and we must conclude that she can also manipulate Vitu-Ghazi and spread the flowers by "mentally" isolating herself in the same way.

    first time I heard this set I thought they mistyped and it was meant to be 'murders at markov manor' not karlov because a murder mystery to me made more sense on imistrad. I do like how each guild during the ravnica invasion was using theyre strengths to battle them. wasnt expecting ot hear that the dimir and orzhov were working together. but it makes a cool combo on how they use theyre abilities to combat the invasion. Wouldve been great to have its own story during the march of machines.

    You know what would have been nice? In the end Tristoni hears a "fourth" voice. In later set it is revealed that the voice is the mycrotyrant and Kellan travelled to Ravinca unintentionally bringing mycotyrant spore and it infected vitu ghazi, becoming a parasitic fungus suppressing harmony, disrupting order, allowing oba to act independently without the other 2 finding out due to their diminished state, and oba using the pollen/spore trick of the mycrotyrant thinking it was her own idea. The next few sets would be based on how kellan unintentionally has been infecting each plane with the spores and how each planes deals with it unbeknownst to the general populace that it is the mycrotyrant. Like Amonket is an arid plane so the mycrotyrant has a passive role and ended up terraforming part of the desert into an oasis which people think is a natural phenomenon, on Theros because of the infected worshiper of the mycrotyrant obtain a god aspect that directly oppose another new god created from memories of the phyrexian, and those that are partially compleated but the heros think that it is just a new god born to defeat the phyrexian god. It then becomes a planar war as some seek to destroy the mycrotyrant because is it an blight on their plane like Ravnica, others want to preserve it since it is helpful like Amonkhet, while others are neutral since the fungus blended into the plane's systems flawlessly like like Theros.

    I loved the story this set, the relationship between Teysa and Kaya ensuring it was great. Thier dynamic was one I really enjoyed throughout, even when Teysa was dead and absent the impact on Kaya and her internal thoughts and motives was truly wonderful, with the hug at the end feeling so incredibly earned and deserved. They have always had an odd dynamic since they first started interacting and it has just been great to see it develop. Kaya and Kellan is also fun, I like how his infectious enthusiasm and excitement rubs off on her and helps her cheer up. Proft to me was just meh but Etrata was interesting. I do think the story is carried by Kaya, she is a great narrator, and historically has been as well which is nice. I agree with the themes feeling very Cappena-y but so me its not like they can't fit into Ravnica. I think this would have worked better on Cappena thematically but it would have been a weaker story due to the lack of established characters as it is the characters that carry this story, supported by the mystery.

    26:05 I agree with you on that and to be fair, I feel like some plot points could be added to clarify the story on the cards. I'm talking about the part where Oba's accusations on the flavor text of Worldsoul's Rage are disproved. Without that I thought she's gonna be arrested for vigilantism or something like that. And that feeling was amplified by Proft's pity on his flavor text of the same card

    It was an interesting story, I would say, very much like ACDoyles Sherlock Holmes.
    One thing I want to say is regarding Judith's plan: I strongly believe she sent Massacre Girl herself to attack Aurelia, so that Aurelia would march to war with Rakdos, but telling her to claim to having no memory of it to make it seem that the attack was part of Oba's scheme. Because I can see no reason Oba would have to try and kill Aurelia.

    • @MagicArcanum
      @MagicArcanum  9 месяцев назад

      Massacre Girl was hired by Judith to kill Proft, but seems to have been under the pollen's influence for her attack on Aurelia. Oba didn't have a direct problem with Aurelia (as far as we heard in the story) but she did want all the guilds pointing fingers at each other, and not at the Selesnya. Massacre Girl killing Aurelia would have achieved exactly that.

    Spectulation: Ettrata wasn't actually controlled by the pollen, Dimir did the first murder to initiate the investigation and get the attention of the detectives. They even bothered to dress her up as a Selesnian agent to hint at the source and stage all of the evidence afterward. Etrata was then instructed to delete her own memory to cover the trail. She wasn't wearing a guild seal because Dimir still obeys the guild pack.

    • @MagicArcanum
      @MagicArcanum  9 месяцев назад

      Then why would Oba confess to a room full of people that she did use the pollen on Etrata (and others) and was proud of it, saying she acted in the best interests of Ravnica?

    • @icholi88
      @icholi88 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@MagicArcanum Because she believed she did, but the pollen never actually worked on her. Etrata was already planted/protected by Dimir mind magic and just played along to convince Oba she was in charge.
      This is Dimir taking action without anyone else knowing that they were the ones acting (preserving the guildpact).
      Oba chose Etrata to act and the target but Dimir interfered by leaving behind the evidence for people to follow and covered their tracks.

    • @MagicArcanum
      @MagicArcanum  9 месяцев назад

      I don't understand your speculation anymore. You think the Dimir were behind everything? Why? Why would they want to kill other leaders, like Teysa and Zegana? You think they forced Oba to kill people? Or do you think it was still Oba's idea all along, and the Dimir somehow knew it before anyone else, but rather than deal with her on their own, they went through an elaborate scheme to have their own best assassin commit a murder with the intent of leading the actual authorities back to the real killer?
      I get that everyone thinks the Dimir are mischievous and all, but they don't do things for no reason, and I don't think they'd perform a planned murder to stop another (known) murderer, if that's what you're trying to suggest.

    • @icholi88
      @icholi88 9 месяцев назад +1

      @@MagicArcanum She is still a member of the guildpact so they can't kill her, they also can't tell people outside the pact they know what she is doing because that also breaks the guildpact (acknowlegding their existence). So they just leave behind all the needed evidence for proft to eventually solve it and expose her. Leaving even a cryptic letter would also expose too much information and draw more suspiction as to who is gathering said information as well.
      It's not "eyes roll" always Dimir. Its sincerely, always Dimir. You can't even rationalize why she would take the time to set all this up before the murder when it doesn't benefit Oba at all to do so. It's because it doesn't benefit her to do so.
