Ok this is why music is so amazing. When I here this I feel like im sticking my finger into a lathe spinning at 3000 rpm before having my entire body pulled into the vortex and shredding every inch of my flesh into a pulp
There’s No cheating in music. Only the end result really matters. If people enjoy what you’re playing they won’t care how you did it much, they’ll just enjoy listening. And for yourself, if you enjoy playing and you feel you’re playing something that sounds nice to you, then that’s all that really matters.
Don't remember what channel I saw it on now, but a recording engineer was commenting on studio guitarists vs certain guitarists in the band and told a story: a guy kept having open strings ringing; recording engineer suggested they tape the open strings so they don't buzz, to which the guitarist replied "that's cheating" - when everyone gets paid by the hour the only one getting cheated is you for not taking the quick way to the right sound
Learning how music works is the goal like you said, but you gotta get there somehow. Learning shapes and positions is great for learning how to visualize music, nothing wrong with that
@@VeloVios I feel like that's a pretty ignorant way to look at it. Don't learn shapes or positions? Those are some of the first things that every guitar teacher will teach you. It's the fastest way to get going, and only loses relevance if you change tunings. Even then, your tunings may have similar relative shapes. Even my jazz class in college emphasized positions. You don't really learn or understand that other stuff until you dive more into theory, and not many people are learning theory before they pick up a guitar.
I play a lot of open tunings, the sounds are so unique and filled with harmonic richness! But, they are far from a cheat. You have to learn unique fingerings, some which do not resemble standard tunings at all! So, well worth the time! 😊
@@Rosskles FFCCCF is a good one! It does put a lot of tension on the smaller strings and bending is a bitch. I play my standard tuning 1/2 step down, or Eb. For FFCCCF, I start a full step down, or D#, then treat that as E and step it up to tune. Good to hear from a fellow opener and thanks for the memory jog!
I like Double Drop D for its ability to both be a very quick change (drop the top and bottom strings down a step) but to also be two open tunings at the same time (open G on top and open D on the bottom). Could also be looked at as an open g9 tuning too. It’s extremely versatile and creative, one of my favorites.
more than Outer Wilds, i'd say it really sounds like Life is Strange menus or those sequences with varying camera angles when you take a moment to feel
this is where I LOVE my variax & helix - tuning @ the press of a button - was hard to hear the notes @ end of video to copy - I think I got it..sweet sound
One of my favorite tunings is B-F#-b-d#-f#-c# Nice and low, you can capo the top 3-4-5 strings to shift things around a bit too, tons of fun and lots of neat stuff you can do
@@drewchancey Yeah, they’re both great! I’ve been listening to both of them over and over while riding down the road today.😅 I wish I could play the guitar and make up cool things like that. They’re both equally amazing, but I do think “you’ve been in a creative rut but you spot a glimmer of something in the distance” is my favorite.😅
Sounds great.Just getting into DADGAD tuning.Alternates really open you up to a lot more ideas too. They jumpstart the creative process.Great for getting you out of a rut.👍🏻🎶
Thanks! I agree! I actually posted two videos, this one and another one in this tuning and that was the title, "youve been in a creative rut but..." LOL
Joni Mitchell famously played in open tunings a lot, and she made a lot of wonderfully creative music with them. Something like Amelia would be a great technical showcase, but even her "simple" songs like Chelsea Morning are great. IIRC she actually started using open tunings because of movement difficulties she had from having polio.
This is about the fifteenth comment I've replied to to explain that the title is tongue in cheek but i refuse to change the title at this point XD I really like open tunings. Nothing wrong with them and I play in them a good bit
Stephen Stills used a lot of open E tuning to get that lovely, bright and yet deep and rich sound to his guitar on classics like Suite: Judy Blue Eyes!
I did read your description, and as a fellow musician (although I am a sorry excuse for one I think, I'm more like a monkey with a guitar) I thoroughly agree that there is no cheating in music, as music is all about the ends. The means be damned.
So given enough time I will eventually play the complete works of beethoven.. I cant wait for the moment I accidentally play the 14th sonatas 3rd movement.
i should mess around with d modal more… been in love with it ever since i heard it in the bastion theme and it’d give me a lot more to work with with my droney tendencies lol
Recently I started playing with an open tuning and as much as I can musically come up with things and improvise, it doesn't click for me on open tunings. For now I'm just transposing standard riffs into the open tuning to get some idea about the shapes and intervals
Open tunings are a whole new world ready for guitarists to discover. Open D, open C, ... At one point everyone should just try it because with just 1 finger you can make such gorgeous music! I wrote a tune in open D and when played on a quality guitar the sound is just mesmerizing, hard to believe it's me
I will never forget when I wanted to play Fearless by Pink Floyd and changed the tuning to DGDGBB for the first time. It opened the realm of possibilities on the guitar and led me to experiment with a lot of other beautiful open tunings.
an interesting tuning i've learned is this variation of an open C tuning, with F as the 6th string instead of C, a little like this: FGCGCE interesting sound when you use a capo
Haha, yes for simple airy chords, for sure! However, incorporating melodies gets hairy quick, just like anything else. I have a video of Red is the Rose in DADGAD but I recorded it vertical for Instagram and you can't see the fretboard. I may re-record that with decent sound and good visual. ruclips.net/video/xKp1JwjHT_U/видео.htmlsi=aBHMhbx8VCLJJvzQ
I always go open c if I wanna sound bluesy while doing the equivalent to button mashing on the fretboard. Bit of a gamble though, one wrong note and it sounds off
"If you ain't cheatin', you ain't tryin'."
Thank you for that sage advice, Chief Idiot :D
Thought dude was talking shit but he’s just being formal 😂
If you're cheating, you ain't trying hard enough.
Honestly, this feels like some Yogi Berra style advice 😂

Didn’t know my girlfriend was an open tuning. Thanks for that.
Damn that's rough haha 😂 sorry
This will blow up soon
EDIT: Called it
Made my day. Can relate XD

yeah but those big beautiful alternative chord progressions tell me otherwise
That’s some pretty damn good cheating
Makes me think of a nice kayaking trip down a clear river in the spring time
That's exactly what I thought!
From all things on planet earth you had the idea of a Kayak? Wtf 😂
Well how else are you getting down the clear river Crank

If it sounds good, it sounds good. No matter how simple.
This is a really mature and healthy take on music and art in general. I salute you, please keep spreading love
When i started learning slide guitar in open D it gave me a concussion trying to relearn the shapes programmed into my fingers
I bet
😂😂😂

I always play in open D, it’s just so beautiful and effortless.
The kinda music you could listen to all day
Hey, that’s beautiful. Open tunings are indeed «cheating», in terms of it always sounding better than other tunings - so it will always be the best 👍
D A D E A D is my go to tuning
try DADFAC
@@monsterhunter9186 also FADACF I love (AF- stay home is where I got it from I think)
