    That crab at the beginning to his friends later - "Bruh, I'm telling you, this giant cage dropped from the surface and I was trapped under it but I escaped, I swear!"

      We'll be crabbing at an altitude of minus 30 feet. Weather looks good at our destination. So sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Lol

    I've watched them all. Excellent videos and tips.
    Curious how you feel about crabbing in the PNW compared to the East Coast?
    I Haven't had the opportunity to drop a trap into the Sound in almost a decade.
    Very glad I came across your channel.
    Best of luck with the Done-G's!

      Thanks and thanks!
      I never used traps like this on the East Coast. We always dropped hand lines from drifting boats with fish or chicken parts tied or hooked on and then just teased them up gently so they'd stay clamped til you could net them. I really love crabbing that way, so when the niece and nephew come out west that's how I get them into it. It's more steady action, keeps their attention and sparks a lot of oohs, aahs and laughs. Works great, too. I rig them up with hand lines weighted with stray metal parts like zinks, tie on bait and we have hours of fun. The DunGs seem to hang on as tenaciously as the blue claws back east, so you just scoop them up in a net.
      So, main difference for me is using the trap out here, especially when I'm fishing alone or dropping on the way out to do an hour shrimp drop or troll salmon in deeper water.spot shrimping, now that's a whole different ball of... 500 feet of line.
      On a cultural level... I haven't see a full-blown dipsy war out west, with busted winshields and flying?lead.maybe slightly more gentile out here

    Awesome videos. Where did you get the canned makeral? Also I switched to plastic coverd lead weights. The rebar works but it rusts fast and starts to make a mess in the boat.

    • @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo
      @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo  6 месяцев назад +2

      Ordered the mackerel online. Came as a case of 12 x 15oz cans for about $2 a can. And now realizing I only need half a can per drop. I can't get chicken that cheap. Still like a nice fish carcass, but this much easier to keep on hand and less mess.
      I hear on the rebar. But I've had good luck painting it with rust-stop farm paint. I save those Cadillac weights like you're talking about for diving! But yes, great option. I'm hoping folks will weight their traps anyway possible, so this is showing a cheap, workable option. Happy crabbing!

    Wondering if you've covered or will cover the setting you use on the GoPro? I noticed how red the video is when pull it up to surface so I'm curious white balance you're using and such.

    • @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo
      @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo  4 дня назад +1

      Good eye! That's just laziness on my part in post. Since I've been wanting to watch them in real time, I just do a standard color correction in the nle in the beginning and don't bother changing it for the shallows. So it's just set to bring back the reds and yellows at depth.
      I use a dome on the gopro. You could add a cc30R behind that for color, but nowadays easier to do it in post without having to worry about another layer of glass or plastic in front of the lens and sensor.

      @@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo ahh good to know, that easy enough to do. Thinking I might try this with my trap and older GoPro later this year. Always curious to see what they're up to and how the trap is working. I've got a round trap and the doors are just the two vertical bars so hopefully less issues getting their claws stuck when entering. Loving the videos!

      Yeah, it's always interesting. I dropped an expendable old gopro in a shrimp pot this season amd saw some cool stuff. Since then, my outboard crapped out so I haven't been able do do any drops at all. Hope to get back out for the winter season to finally do all the tests I had planned. Good luck and have fun!

    I would try to zip tie a smooth plastic surface to the outside of the door. I bet they would be able to slide in easier. Clear thin plexiglass might even work better. Those bars really seem to be tricky to navigate.

    • @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo
      @BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo  5 месяцев назад

      That would work, but then you have to think of current opening the downcurrent door or doors. So you add weight to counter that and then drill holes in the plexi to cut down current effect like someone else suggested. It would work, but I'm pretty sure making any part of the trap solid or at least less than the minimum mesh size would be against regs. Plus it's going to be simpler (I hope!) just to cut out the middle horizontal bars. Thanks for watching!

      @@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo Great points. I should have prefaced those suggestions with the fact that I have never set a crab trap. I’ll stick to hunting and leave the crabbing to you. Good luck!

      Folks who spend a lot of time outdoors fishing or hunting or boating or camping tend to have curious and problem-solving kinds of minds, so it's great to hear ideas from people with all kinds of experience. They usually work, like yours, but sometimes it's regs or whatever that throw a curve. I've never hunted, so I'd be in the same boat if we were talking deer. Happy hunting!

    From your previous videos, maybe a finer mesh on the uppers of those doors. Stop their claws getting stuck but not fine enough to be 'blown' open by the current?

      @@BobsUnderwaterCrabHouse-so2wo Can't have any mesh on it smaller though? Not even a 2x4 bit covering the top half of a door? Everything else would be big enough. Hm... Interesting though what would be a breach of rules and what wouldn't... I wouldn't want you to find out the expensive way. Looking forward to seeing your channel grow and evolve. I can't site a specific line in the rules, but I have the question in to a top guy at WDFW to see if my assumption is correct.
      Yes, crabs are amazing! Wonderful variety of species and adaptations. Some of my favorites are the decorator crabs that put anemones on themselves for protection.
