I have been to 44 states and Iowa is one of my favorites. It has a lot of cool places to visit and clean and safe cities. It also pushes way above its weight in the craft beer scene with Dimensional, Toppling Goliath, Lua, Confluence, Pulpit Rock, Lions Bridge in Cedar Rapids, etc. The state capital building in Des Moines is one of may favorite capital buildings. Up on a hill over looking downtown with monuments around it is wonderful.

The original plans for the Wright Bros airplane were drawn up here where they lived for a time. We were also in the top 10 cities on the bomb list during the cold war as the largest cereal plant in the world is here along with at the time Collins Radio that was heavy with gov avionics contracts.

If you think CR is empty, take a ride down Centerpoint, Edgwood, 1st Ave, or Collins Rd. any time of the day or night. The traffic rivals the worst that St. Louis has to offer.

The park sits on 165 acres of an abandoned trash dump. Many miles of walking trails..has 2 lakes for fishing..many picnic areas and even a 24,000 square ft skate park. It gets 1 million visitors a year...more than any park in the city (and they have a bunch).

Joe you have really stepped up your game with the extra information to go with the tours. I took art history in college but I never knew the facts you stated about the American Gothic painting. Good video!

How awesome! I learned a lot about my city through you! What a fun video. Thank you for visiting! If you are even more curious about Grant Wood, he was born in Anamosa, not entirely far from Cedar Rapids, and painted the little town of Stone City, where he also spent some time. Apparently he is buried in Anamosa. Stone city is a gorgeous little place. If you ever come through here again I highly suggest it. Safe travels

If you've been following along with this trip, you'll remember that Joe and Nic were spending more than $100 on dinner when they were touring the West Coast. I don't know how much you eat out, but $62 for two entrees, a dessert and an alcoholic drink at a nice establishment does not seem like a rip off in 2024.

@@milessampson3942I was surprised when he said it was a good deal to get out of there for less than $100. I would never spend that much on one meal

A nice meal at a sit down restaurant in Houston, Texas would be at least that much. Any premium burger in Houston is $10-15 ..... Desserts are often meant(and priced/portioned) to be shared.

Just to clarify/specify the models for Grant Wood's "American Gothic": The man was Grant Wood's dentist, Dr. Byron McKeeby, and the woman was Grant Wood's sister, Nan Wood Grant.

Thank you for visiting Cedar Rapids. Live in Marion now, but used to live one block up from that Kum & Go, you went right past that street in the construction. You also passed the old Higley Mansion behind that brick wall right before you got to the gas station, it has been added onto and turned onto a care center. Brucemore mansion would be a great place for people to visit as it is open for tours. Imagine all those streets lined with even more trees, the derecho of 2020 caused alot of damage from the 140 MPH winds. For perspective the flood of 2008, just as you went down that hill past the Kum & Go was ALL flooded, the hospital had water just above the ground level and had to transfer patients to the other hospital.

G,day from Sydney Australia. Mt Trashmore is concerning with contamination leaching through subsoil down to the river.I don't know how to fix it. "We" started using lining in landfill waste sites and classification of the area as contamination, not for residential or sporting use. The "bad old days" when our engineering was responsible for rubbish removal without thinking about soil ecology and heavy metal!!!

Hey you both... My partner and I watch your videos almost daily, or as much as you upload em. We just finished this one and you mention coming back to the East Coast after Hawaii...
Please give Portland, Maine another shot. The last time you were here it was rainy and you missed a lot of really awesome stuff. From John Calvin Stevens homes, to Revolutionary war forts, to a haunted hotel, High Roller Lobster Co... and more...

I was living in Iowa City in 2008 during the major flooding of Cedar Rapids and Iowa City (the flooding you referred to in this video). I had actually just moved from Cedar Rapids to Iowa City a few months prior to the flood. Those were some crazy times. The flood destroyed all of downtown Cedar Rapids, which prompted most businesses to move out of the area. This is why downtown Cedar Rapids is so desolate nowadays. It was a very bustling epicenter prior to the floods. I hope that maybe one day Cedar Rapids will have a viable downtown again, but people are still way too weary to be moving into downtown for business and such due to the high risk of it flooding again with the rivers being in such close proximity to downtown.

I’ve seen videos (not yours), of the homeless in L.A. and Philly. Very depressing. This one is more what one would want a small to mid-sized city in America to look like. Clean and wholesome where the citizens care about the looks of the place, right down to the trash.

I’ve been to the western part of Iowa(Sioux City…etc), but I’ve never been to that part. I’ve read good things about the cities there like Des Moines…etc. I’ve heard it’s great place to live. The only negatives are bitter-cold winters and devastating tornadoes. Rock on!
