Ferrari F50 with Tiff Needell - The Story of an Icon

- Tiff Needell gets nostalgic with a supercar icon - the Ferrari F50.
After the success of Ferrari's F40 supercar, the Ferrari F50 was billed as an F1 car for the road, using a race-proven V12 engine and cutting edge engineering. But it was always considered a bit of a difficult second album, and often lived in the shadow of its groundbreaking predecessor.
Tiff reminisces about a drag race with Jeremy Clarkson for BBC Top Gear and explores whether the F50 deserves it's reputation. Finding out in the process what a classic 512 horsepower supercar feels like on a wet Scottish b-road, and if lives up to Alain Prost's 641 Formula 1 car it shares so many similarities with.

F40 or F50?
That question is so brutal
Impossible to answer......until you look at values. I'll have three F40's please in different colours :)
F50 every-time.
Ok the f40 is quicker but everyone loves the f50 more I think. The sound is epic 😝 I think it's very pretty too.
F50!
“The story of an icon.” Which one, the car or Tiff?
Both 😂
tiff beats the other british guys, clarkson, etc
@@vicius996 And he could actually drive like a F1 driver!
Tiff is in his own lane
Yes
His reference to Jeremy Clarkson was professional courtesy at its finest.
what happened between him and Clarkson?
@@mahavakyas002 nothing big , back in the day they hosted top gear together
Cluckson is a petulant child next to The Big Needle.
really miss Tiff on car reviews, some kind of a gentleman approach.
Yeah, and with real passion! He also knows what he's doing.
He's the Big Daddy before Cluckson invented Chucklevision in car form.
I love all Ferraris but the F50 is probably my most favorite of them all. It has always held a very special place in my heart ever since I first saw it in the Need for Speed racing game as a kid in '99. It's just so beautiful and to me it epitomises everything that Ferrari is about: Racing technology combined with a beautiful design. I could look at the F50 forever and never get bored.
Congratulations F50 owner your car has been blessed by the legend Tiff Needell himself
F50 is pure beauty. Tiff is pure legend!
Thank you very much!
@@lovecarsTV Your videos are instant gold for me! I have deep in my hearth 360 Modena and Enzo review from back in the days. I remember every word, every sceen. Its just magic. The kind of memories that fuels my passion for cars all my life.
The design of the F50 Is perfect, never seen a Supercar with such elegance.
@@AeDevices 👌
I would watch Tiff Needell review literally any car in the world. That this video features the F50 is just icing on the cake.
Right? I would watch Tiff review coffee pots lol
There are only two.. Tiff Needell & Chris Harris that can exactly tell you what the car feels like,,
Epic video..
Lol, Chris? Nah
@@netweed09 Lol, even Jeremy admitted that Chris can drive well.
Tiff approaching National Treasure status there! Another poetic and super enthusiastic review, such joy!
1:46 is exactly why we love big NA engines and manual boxes!
until you see the maintaince price...
@@campkira maintenance price of what? The F50? One could afford it to own it...
Now maintenance of a NA Manual? Well it sure is more maintenance free than a more complicated turbo or supercharged vehicle.
Tiff gradually building the revs gave me chills!
Lovecars: "F40 or F50?"
Me: "Yes"
Tiff really is an outstanding presenter, he fills me with excitement as if I were there.
WHAT A VIDEO!!! Genuinely one of your best guys, gonna watch it again now 👌
You're such a great driver too Joe!
The F50 has always been my favorite since I put about a million miles on it in Need For Speed II.
That’s quite a car in quite some scenery.
Loved it
Over the years, I have realized there is no one like Tiff. He is best of the best at what he does. No one can get you excited about a car like him.
Only just found Tiff again on this channel .So pleased as he has always stuck in my mind from the F1 Mclaren review all those years ago. Subscribed .
Tiff+V12+6 speed = A real pleasure to watch thanks
For me is the F50. It was the first postercar in my bedroom and had also the F40 as a Bburago 1/18 scale.
I was mesmerized by the details on the engine, the back end, the profile, just a marvelous looking car. Saw both the F40 and F50 at the Ferrari museum and just sat in awe and did a couple bows before them, I never even went in the next room to see the then launched La Ferrari.
Been waiting for this one! Love it chaps
Thank you guys! Let’s get a pair of cars and do one together soon 👍
Perfectly made video. I cannot stand watching most car youtubers like Shmee or Donut Media, but this I would watch over and over again. Stellar work Tiff!
This video is one for Tiff's Greatest Hits album.
Stunning video, absolutely beautifully shot. I loved the drone footage, something which I don't ever think an F50 video has benefitted from. The shots inside the engine bay are fascinating, seeing the suspension moving. This video is the ultimate review of a 25 year old icon, it deserves to go viral!
Thank you very much Andrew!
F50 is the best Ferrari, naturally aspirated V12 is all that needs to be said.
Don't think you're alone with this view!
They still use it, when everyone thought 3 years ago, the F12 would be the final farewell. I’m not normally that fussed over N/A vs Turbocharging and sometimes I think N/A gets too much love, but I cannot deny that having a Ferrari N/A V12 accompanying you as you blast down the road, is one of life’s great pleasures!
racecar sure... road car.. no... most uncomfortable car ever....
No!! 599-GTO is the best Ferrari
As an experience it's probably quite nice for a bit, but you'd probably happily trade it for a 458, F12 or Enzo after a while.
I love watching tiff his pur enthusiasm and love of fine cars has never dimmed
👌😁
Such a timeless design! This is the most spectacular of them all!
Tiff is simply a legend what a great video!
Love the fact we’re seeing more of Tiff again. Fifth Gear were nuts to not renew his contract he’s probably one of the best motoring journalists of all time. Funny when you hear him talk on Podcasts and stuff, he’s actually non plussed by road cars and rarely bothers to buy his own.
Amazing video. I prefer the F50, personally. And always have found it to be an awesome looking machine.
It’s great to see Tiff driving and talking about these legendary cars, no one like him
At the Launch of the F40, it was the most exciting car ever made. Over the next 30+ yrs, only a small handful of cars are as special to drive. Putting the special cars in order, maybe the F40 is not #1 anymore. But, journalists with experience of F40 and F50 always place the F40 higher. The rich, The motor journalists, the Racing drivers, all go for the F40 into their collections. Even they can afford both. Both cars are very good, but the talented and experienced people who have driven both, know the F40 is on another level. Nothing wrong with having a favorite, one of these two or a different car. Each person, has different reasons. Love your favorite car, be happy. I would love to own both.
This video sent shivers down my spine! The sound is nothing less than an orchestra! ❤️
When I was 12-14 I much preferred the f40. Whereas when I turned 19 a few years ago, the f50 just became so much more appealing in every way. Its bloody incredible
I recall Luca di Montezemolo in a documentary on the car at the time saying something along the lines, "The Ferrari F-50 was a very difficult package, it was the first time we try to do, the Formula 1 for the road."
My poster, my model, my childhood, my dream car, all in one.
Lived in Modena in late 90’s, and, well, my neighbor had it, with black Speedline rims.
Yeah, the F40, but supercars are something that go straight to the heart, and this one entered mine when I was 7, and never went away.
It certainly is a special car!
@@lovecarsTV really it is, and that sound, should be considered classic music.
I remember the first F50 I ever saw and heard was at Maranello, I was so excited I just about cried. Not just my favourite Ferrari, but my favourite vehicle fullstop. Great review from my favourite car reviewer.
Thank you very much!
@1:45 is one of the best motoring journalism captions I have ever seen. A true reflection of passion from the truly legendary Tiff.
Tiff manages to give us the goods! No nonsense pedal to metal fun! Well done to Lovecars!
Tiff you are the last gentleman driver, please keep going with your reviews, anecdotes and inspiring lead. Really enjoy the style of your channel.
Jeremy Clarkson is witty, and funny. Tiff Needell is witty, and funny. And a Real Racing Driver. Tiff is so great, driving and delivering an honest review of a car that us mere morals would almost immediately crash.
How and why is Tiff not a household name?
Tiff is the OG car reviewer. I love his energy!
Tiff hasn't changed in 20 years. I bet he was just as cheerful when he was racing.
Finally a good quality video about F50.
Wish there was a no-talking road driving video, I'd be watching it daily just to hear that V12 sing uninterrupted
Gosh, nearly had a nostalgic tear in my eye watching this. My favourite F car by a country mile!
Thank you tiff and crew, a true icon showing resilience, grit and the honer ably way in which us as a english nation benefit.
In these times of uncertainty your productions are ever more appreacited. Cheers mate, uplifting
Thank you very much
Love seeing Tiff explaining cars like this.
F50 was featured on NFS 2, and that was my first ever racing game. I love this masterpiece more than any other classic or modern car.
Certainly a legendary car. 😏👍
It is still until this day for me one of the most beautiful Ferrari ever made. That rear wing shape looking from rear. What a beauty.
The f50 looks and sounds absolutely fantastic!! The thing about it is that everything feels raw it even shakes you while you’re cruising!!!
I really love Tiff's voice with enthusiasm.
Tiff was always the chill dad like guy on Top Gear
Its always been the F50 for me... a fascination from about age 9 yrs old when the car came out. Everything about it ticks every box i want in a dream car.
Very few people can talk with such details about the driving experience- almost puts you in the driver´s seat. Amazing review, amaning journalist and amazing machine!
Man, Tiff’s still got it. What a freaking awesome review.
I remember when my uncle brought a Bburago F50 in ‘95-‘96 from Italy for Christmas. The box was this grey and black checker print - I couldn’t tell it was a car, so I was unimpressed. When I took the box out of the bag and I’ve turned it around to see the F50...I was just stunned. It blew me away. The lines were so simple but yet so addictive. I played with it for years. The transverse suspension in the back had me amazed. 25 years later, I still have the F50 in my room.
I love the fact I own one of these. It is parked in between my McLaren F1 and my Ford GT40........ (in my cabinet) 🤣
I've got the space shuttle in mine
Had the privilege to see ( and most importantly hear ) one in Bucharest ... my God that sound will remain with me for the rest of my life !!
The first toy car my dad ever bought me.. it was made out of plastic, but it kept me dreaming... i couldn't understand how on earth a car can have "holes" on its bonnet.. but i was five and for me it was fast as a spaceship... honestly for me it's the most beatiful and the most iconic ferrari EVER made
Still one of my favs. Great video
Wow just brilliant guys 👏. You can really tell what an experience that was from tiff’s smile and the noises he was making
What an astonishing video, well done it was magnificient, those drone shots mamamia. And the noise...
One of the last, or maybe the last Ferrari with three pedals and shift stick, 5 valves per cylinder, it's a dream
Tiff is simply the best car journalist in the world. Pure quality and class!
Thank you for this birthday present! My favorite car.
Happy birthday!
@@lovecarsTV thank you!
Happy Birthday Man 😎
happy birthday lol
I used to see 2 of them at the drag strip south of Dallas back in the late 90s which is crazy if you think about since they're so rare.
Amazing!
Tiff is a great presenter, he cracks me up
I'm not from the UK and only recently found this Tiff person was a professional car racer, big respect for him now.
Yes!!! The drag race with the F40 had me yearning for an F50 bit. I just love the V12 sounds this makes, and the fact it was the last V12 mid-engine Ferrari with a manual.
Ha! Bit better than a drag race though!
Probably Lovecars, greatest ever video to date.....yes F50 has always been my favourite.... I never liked the finish on a F40... for a road car.
Thank you Alan!
Lamborghini can only imagine getting even close to the legacy of Ferrari.
Yeah, but a Lambo is Lambo & will always be better than a Rari.
@@SS-cv4fo Lol. How?😂
Can't really compare them, Ferrari was focused on racing since it's very beginning, while Lamborghini only recently entered GT3 series. Ferrari is considered to be better driving car, while Lambo better to look at.
I drove a 488gtb and a huracan performante on a track back to back and I honestly have to say the Lamborghini was a more thrilling car. The V10 is visceral in ways a turbo V8 can never be, the ferrari was more refined but the hurican would be my pick every time.
Lamborghini's are more fun to drive. More engaging. Less techno-gismo-like. Lamborghini's i love them. But i love Ferrari's also very very much
I can watch Tiff review (DRIVE) great cars ALL DAY.
Tiff might be my favorite person to listen to talking about cars. His love for these machines is so entertaining.
Lovely editing and drone footage, oh and nice car
My favourite Ferrari of all time. It takes your breath away just looking at it. Beautiful.
The cinematography in this is outstanding! Well done
After experiencing the Scottish Highlands in a rented 2008 and being amazed by the place, can't imagine what a week in an F50 would be like. What a piece of history and tech. Amazing video!
Awesome video 💪🏾 Tiff is such a legend.
Such an incredible video. I keep watching it over and over again! 👍🏼👍🏼
So nice to see an actual road test ! 🙌
I love the way he described clarkson! 🤣 we need a drag race between tiff and jeremy
Tiff was the first guy that made me love cars....thanks man
I miss seeing Tiff on TV, thank you for the content. =)
Amazing and beautiful car! Great vid. Thanks, Tiff and the Lovecars crew.
Sheer beauty of F50 made me into a car enthusiast. Honestly everyone drooling over F40 being a drivers car but rarely who drove it. F50 on the other hand can be apreciated just by looking and hearing it.
Brilliant review! Love the F50! Seems so wide and daunting on roads like that but looks like an amazing experience!
I feel like the f50 is the car that gets overlooked. It’s fantastic! and I’m glad to see Tiff still taking us along for a ride! I’ve always been partial to v12 Ferraris so…
Great honest review. Tiff knows his stuff. 😜👍😜 learned something too.
Thanks for watching!
@@lovecarsTV Wouldn't miss one. 😜👍
Proper old skool motoring journalism 👏🏼👏🏼
Born in 82 it was and still is my dream Car.
3:39 it’s fantastic to see the British inventor Commander Lumley Robinsons’ Jubilee Clip still providing sterling service keeping the fluids in. After all these years and used in almost every automobile, plane, train and piece of piped machinery, from this F50 to the Fiat 500 spare a thought for this brilliant man.
Great video, Good luck for Thursday 👍🏻
Top Job Tiff and Co.
My late mum collared you and Goodwood Revival about 10 years ago, she always talked about the time she did this. You made an old lady smile for weeks. Always the gent 👍
If the only videos this channel released from now on were just more of Tiff driving the F50, I'd still watch every one.
I saw one of these in Salt Lake back in 2006? It was during the Gumball 3000. Still one of the best looking cars ever made. Give me one of these over any new exotic!!
I'll never forget the sound the F50 made when I heard it start and rev in person when I was 21 years old. It was awesome.
Haha, Tiff is such a big child ! Lovely. Tiff's reviews are so relaxing. Love the smile on his face when winding that V12 up !
😊 thank you
Amazing car and this video did it justice, Tiff did an amazing job but hats off to the hard work behind the camera and editors 👏👏
Amazing video, reminds me of the old Top Gear episodes with Tiff in the early 2000's, those are very good feelings.
