Dynasty Warriors 4 Is The Most Humbling Experience (I pursued Lu Bu)

- My most viewed video on the platform involves me re-visitng the Dynasty Warriors 5 game, and while I enjoyed playing the game on the channel, there is something I must deal with. Dynasty Warriors 4 was actually my first shown DW game, however the mission of Hu Lao Gate lives rent free in my head, so now I returned grown up to face my trauma from this game.
So Sun Jian was part of the southern army during the fight against Dong Zhou with Yuan Shu in charge. (Yuan Shao led the northern army while Liu Dai led the eastern army (Cao Cao was part of that army)
Each army attacked one after the other with Wang Kuang leading the northern force. He was defeated by Dong Zhou's general Xu Rong.
Cao Cao attacked from the east and was defeated by Xu Rong.
Sun Jian attacked from the south and was defeated by Xu Rong.
A little while afterwards there was a failed coup attempt against Dong Zhou who got nervous and revamped the army structure and sent Xu Rong back to Chang An, he sent Hu Zhen to lead the army against Yuan Shu and Sun Jian. Lu Bu hated Hu Zhen and kinda screwed with his forces right before Sun Jian attacked. In this battle, Sun Jian killed Hua Xiong and won the battle.
Later, Sun Jian attacked the capital, and Dong Zhou sent Lu Bu to stop him, and Sun Jian defeated him too.
Lu Bu did die fighting Cao Cao and Liu Bei long after Sun Jian died.
Sun Jian was a great general with many victories under his belt.

@@HonHadi-rt2hh I wouldn't call Sun Jian's death an assassination. Yuan Shu sent him to Jing to conquer Liu Biao.
After defeating Liu Biao's forces several times he was besieging his capital. Huang Zu brought reinforcements to save Liu Biao but Sun Jian defeated him again then chased his forces personally with a tiny force. Huang Zu then ambushed the pursuit force killing Sun Jian.
Sun Ce was assasinated, then again Sun Ce tended to be very heavy handed with executing people who he felt didn't show him the proper respect and people conspired against him in return.

If you think fighting Lu Bu is bad, just wait until you get to the Nanman Campaign. . .

@@jayangek3532 create a CAW with Ma Chao’s moveset and cheese with Shadow Runner, and it’s a lot more manageable.
Still difficult if you aren’t aware of how the morale mechanic works since it changes from game to game.
If you only fight and didn't follow order or help some officer then its a lose game😂😂

So you dont have to face the king 7 times just go to the main camp and he will spawn there saying "they're already here!?" And you're good.

What a hit of nostalgia. This was a huge part of my childhood. At 4 years old DW3 was my favorite game. The last one I played was DW6.

Bro, this takes me back to all the times after school and on weekends d I would play this shit with my neighborhood friends. Spent months trying to unlock everyone's 4th weapons.
For me, 5 had better game gameplay, but 3 and 4 had a better feel to them.
This was the game I loved when I was a kid I miss those days
Honestly you should be doing the missions in the chapters before the final missions. That will give you more items.
That's the biggest flaw with DW4, you're automatically locked-on when you hit an enemy with normal attacks. It's annoying. Funny enough, they removed that in DW4 Empires.

I been hopping back on the DW train myself with some Livestreams. I'm just hoping dynasty warriors origins brings it back to it's roots.
Also my tip to get better in this game is u gotta grind a bit in free mode 😭. Get your third or second weapon then hop on Mushu mode so u don't get worked up by the foot soldiers
One tip i can give for all DW games is spam block to reset the camera view, it hella helps and makes a quick turnaround 360 fast af.

The farther back you go in DW, the more they encourage you to fight alongside your allies, so going into large groups alone becomes more lethal - DW2 is by far the hardest but I think it's more fun to move up with your army 😄
Also the auto lock sucks tbh but theres a mod to disable it for PCSX2

Also you may have found this out by now but dynasty warriors 4 does have a difficulty setting, it’s in the options menu.
If your Weapon level about 1-9 it means you must fill your musou gauge or you must let yourself in danger state,Level 10 means your element will work without full musou
How to easy defeat Lu Bu: play as Huang Gai, put a bomb and run 100x (bomb cause damage but no kill, let with 0 of hp)
NEVER DUEL AGAINST LuBu... 💀
too make the game easier do the missions before the final mission of the list, you'll be able to acquire more exp and items. For example Sishui gate before hu lao gate

Dueling Lubu @ HuLao Gate on Chaos mode is impossible even with Cheats. Musou only budges him.
Forgot the key but while guarding, you can parry the attacks.. 😅

It’s humbling but it’s an excellent game. I recommend everyone to try the XL content.
Dw4 XL is so good especially once you get all level 11 weapons you literally feel like you can do anything 😂

If you play these older ones on pcsx2, you can get mods for hi res textures, widescreen, and disable target lock. just to name a few.

In 4 (and 3 and 2) you USE Musou Gauge. If you are hit in a crowd, you pop Musou to avoid taking many more hits.
to be frank, the C4 attack of Sun Jian (and most other single straight sword-wielders) is NOT fitting to deal with crowds. You use this to blow an officer away to deal with the pawns.
15:40 tbf the guys who are laying you out so much aren't the ordinary foot soldiers... they are either sergeants, or guards. These guys have longer attack chains, and also have the run-up attack that knocks you down immediately.
Tips? oh boy
I'm not sure if you are aware, but if an officer is defeated with a high combo (that is, a string of attacks where the target doesn't regain control, or lands prone and invincible in between), they can drop a bigger stat boost - heck, even normal enemies can drop items more likely, if you finish them off with a combo of 10 or more. I think this one is even mentioned in the manual. Remember that the C3 flurry of attacks leaves the target stunned, while the C2 upwards strike launches them upwards.
Don't overuse Charge attacks blindly. In this game enemies can throw hands, and charge attacks leave you open more than normal ones. Heck, the safer (if boring/tedious) alternative, is not even using a full attack chain - make like three attacks, and stop, and immediately begin a new chain.
When fighting a difficult officer, assuming you aren't swarmed, remember that you have a parry counter in this game - while holding the guard, press Triangle/Charge Attack just before taking a hit to parry and counter it. This can be used effectively against Lu Bu's unblockable C1 attack, after you get the timing! Just remember you can't use it if you are already blocking some blows - you can't squeeze a parry in between attacks of a chain.
This is counterintuitive, but you can make a save in midst of battle, by quitting from the pause menu. And no, the save you make this way is actually persistent - it's only overwritten when you make another one like that. So you can make your own "checkpoint" like that.
In these older DW games, allied armies can hold their own, relatively speaking... but, obviously, in general you are needed to win. Pause, check the morale levels of units, to determine which target to prioritise.
One of the buttons allow you to switch between the minimap of the entire battlefield, and the zoomed in minimap of the immediate surroundings (roughly the range at which characters can actually appear on screen). Use the zoomed in minimap when you are actually fighting! A quick glance will let you keep track of enemies around you.

I hope you don't think you are required to defeat Lu Bu to win this battle.... Well, if you *can* (emphasis on IF), then you can, but the intended way to do is to squeeze past him. He has enough targets that, if you move inwards, far enough from the spot you've met him, he will re-engage someone else. You have allies here. Like, try getting him to fight Guan Yu or someone.
28:44 thinning out the mob is, in fact, something that is good to do in old DW games. Even better thing is to have some troops of your own, so you aren't the only thing drawing aggro.
I do think that DW4 has the one of more difficult Hu Lao Gate battles, specifically because it puts Lu Bu in the way, in a relatively tight passage, with no way around. Literally all the other games give you more wiggling room, a way around, or maybe force a fight, but with some sort of balancing factor (like, the Hu Lao Gate battle in DW7 forces a confrontation with Lu Bu, but gives you powerful allies to share the burden, and Lu Bu retreats after taking some damage)

Luckily, there is this mod for Dynasty Warriors 4 that removes the lock on.

Playing as Huang Gai, you can 'defeat' your own leader and troll your friends (player 2).

At your level with such bad weapon and equipment you can barely scratch him. First time i played in order not to drop overall morale i accepted the duel but kept running in circles until time was up. Look it is not cheap or cowardly, you are simply put up against an enemy you can't even damage this early.
