- It was a very nice day so we thought we'd go to the park on Davis Island in downtown Tampa, relax and watch the Air Force Thunderbirds perform their air show at MacDill AFB which is 3 miles across Old Tampa Bay. Little Peter O'Knight Airport with its itty bitty runway is right behind us on Davis Island and it's where an Air Force C-17 cargo plane accidentally landed a year ago or so. POK's runway exactly lines up with MacDill's 15,000 ft runway and after a long flight from the middle east the pilot got confused but did manage to stop the gigantic plane a few feet short of the end of the runway which was good.
Sometimes the Thunderbirds or Blue Angels (whoever is doing the show) fly right over our heads at the park. One got so close a couple of years ago that we could see the guy in the cockpit wave at us. That didn't happen this year but it was a pleasant outing, the food was good and once again we avoided the 500,000 people crammed into MacDill.
Thanks for watching.
