Jack what are you talking about claiming this was a speedy appointment? Just because the news came out of the blue doesn't mean the FA hadn't been working for months towards this outcome. Clearly the FA worked in a confidential manner and Southgate has been gone for three months. Three months isn't a short amount of time in football.

I'm still shocked they didn't wait for a Guardiola response. But it is a super strong appointment,
It really seems like England is the strongest opportunity to win a world cup if Guardiola wanted a sure thing, England is it.
My only concern with Tuchel is that he wants an EXTREMELY well drilled team so that he can implement tactical flexibility.
He likes altering his system from game to game to exploit his opponents weaknesses but that requires a squad that can change systems.
I don't know that you can accomplish that with the short amount of time he will have on the training pitch.

To be fair to Tuchel, it was the double injury in the Juventus game to Reece James and Ben Chilwell that killed the 2021-2022 season, before the ownership issues post February 2022. Neither James or Chilwell have ever been the same since.

Why's he not starting straight away?
England have two games before his new contract starts on jan 1st. He could have used those two games as prep games for WC qualifiers.
    Edit
"It was important for me to narrow it down into a project and not lose the focus, to start in another competition, the Nations League, then go into qualification and the tournament," he said.
"I wanted to have a clean start and a bit of time to recharge fully and start in January and start the first camp in March."
Looks like he's wasted a good opportunity to instil his ideas onto the england players. 18 months is a very short time to prepare a team to win or at least compete in the world cup. An extra couple of months would be invaluable i would have thought.

It's the reality of English coaches. They aren't making to the top of English football. They need to find better paths especially outside of England, they need to start branching out just like how there are more English and British player abroad.
You look at how Cesc has gone from getting is badges whilst still a Monaco player then finishing his player career at Como and beginning to coach them as "Assistant Coach" although the in place manager was only a care taker before Cesc would get his full licence. Then you have the type of player the English coach may gravitate to that doesn't suit most of Europe with less emphasis on technical play, have physical talents as a secondary.
Potter went abroad to break into coaching and it worked out for him but the top job either wasn't ready for him or he doesn't suit that level.
Only Howe is of the quality that England may look to but he's currently in a team and isn't currently pushing for a title. Was unlikely to leave for England.
There is a shortage of English talent in coaching with the only true option to apply their trade elsewhere whilst the Prem has either more establish managers with portfolios at multiple clubs with titles or challenging for places. Gary Neville attempted to coach Valencia with no training, Lampard didn't make the playoffs his first year at Derby but at Chelsea managed to guide a mix of senior and youthful team to 4th however couldn't handle the 2nd year that later Tuchel took over leading Chelsea to their 2nd UCL title with a far from favourable frontline. Gerard took over from Dean Smith at Aston Villa, his 2nd job after Rangers that he competed in the league, but at Villa he only acquired 44 points.
Either there's something missing in the current English talent or they just can't make it out the gate at the top 2 levels of English football. They could very learn something from a Jude or Jadon by testing their footballing philosophies in Germany, or Spain with doing badges there or taking on their football pyramid. Not to forget some of those leagues have genuine b teams that compete with seniors in say La Liga 2.
Only 2 candidate who may not have even have been available were remotely qualified to take charge of England and neither of them have done much in world football yet in Howe and Potter, Gerrard and Lampard are no where near the level in terms of man management or tactics and ideas on the pitch. None of the decorated players of the Premier League are good enough, only players/2nd coached who were under Pep have shown anything recently. The English are far far far away in term of quality of coaching compared to the rest of Europe with the only way of advancing now is going to learn in mainland Europe.

he's a pretty flexible coach who likes number 10's and a solid base and i'm optimistic but what swings it for me was Tuchel's media performances during the Chelsea shitshow - very statesmanlike and also very human and empathetic - class act was what struck me at the time and i suspect he will use Gareth's knowledge and advice (and tournament lessons) more than any english or long-term manager. Bold from the FA - 18 mths to win the WC and then hand over to someone else... so maybe 12 mths for the FA to work out who is that next Manager.

If you don't aim to win trophies, why is the manager there? What is the point if you don't go for it at the World Cup, with a team as talent rich as England?
He'll be considered a success if he's able to get them to the podium. 3rd place for 2026 would be considered the minimum

    • @cantripleplays
      @cantripleplays Месяц назад

The point is that the expectation of winning trophies is a harmful one, it’s a much better feeling to win a trophy thinking you’d have a really tough time, than to think you’re gonna have a good one, and it’s a much worse feeling if you lose thinking you’d have a good time. It isn’t about what’s actually to be projected, just a general commentary on how people react to results, even if the process (which is the important thing) isn’t there.

  • @gooner72

Twomey takes his opportunity to back Boehly and Clownlake at the expense of TT, a Chelsea legend. Don’t you think it hasn’t occurred to us that the players wanted to leave because of the new owners and not TT. The fact is that everyone wanted to leave and the mass exodus of our Champions League winning squad happened after TT had left,. So you can’t blame TT when the real reason was the new penny pinching owners who wanted to screw the players out of their big money contracts.

Carsley didn't know if he is English or Irish, didn't know whether to sing the National anthem or not, couldn't handle interviews or being in tge spotlight and showed a Southgatian inability to make shrewd tactical changes in a game, even admitting he was out of his depth at Senior International level. It makes me think the FA need to make BIG changes to the way it develops future English coaches and managers. They did it with players, although we're not developing enough Declan Rice holding or Paul Gascoigne type creative midfielders. So this appointment is at the very least an admission that the FA see the problems within their system.

    • @greengrass811
      @greengrass811 Месяц назад

If you think Declan Rice is the prototype of a holding player, then you should watch a different sport . Graham Souness said it best about Rice, when he said that he is a centre back playing in midfield . The guy can't even do the basics of a holding midfield player, which is getting turned on the ball to make a forward pass.
I am hoping that Tuchel has the sense to drop him from midfield . Rice started his career at centre back . I don't know why he didn't stay there . I swear, there most be at least ten holding midfielders in world football, who are better than him.
There is a young kid playing with crystal palace Adam Wharton , who has all the attributes to become, a really classy midfield player . He can be an English Rodri .
Also I will be amazed if Tuchel, doesn't replace Trent with James, when he comes back from injury . Also, that Newcastle kid Lewis Hall, can be Luke Shaw's replacement at left back .
The only weakness in the team for the World Cup, will be the goal keeper . Pickford's days are numbered, but the only option out there is Nick Pope . He is a great shot stopper, but his ball distribution is quite poor . In fact, Pope is ranked at no 22 in the list of the worlds best goalkeepers. So for a team of England's calibre, he would be a considerable weakness in the team .

No need to get personal. Declan Rice is doing a job he'd rather not do because there is no one else who can do it. We don't produce those players. That was my point. Clearly you didn't understand.
And yes, I'm familiar with Adam Wharton, but the fact that you can't name half a dozen of similar 'type' English players makes my point for me.
If Wharton makes progress, and people say he hasn't been stellar this season, then we might have a solution.
But we are not producing enough Claude Makalele/ Busquets players, nor enough genuinely creative midfielders. That was my other point.

Anyway see how that goes but yeah Popovic for us- see how that goes. And on Tuchel- see how he goes, semis gotta be a minimum. And if they get to the final- gotta get over the line and win it. people are talking about "there was no better english manager available"
well first of all there is no better english manager alive thats nr1 but also there is no good english manager FULL STOP
in the last 30years no english coach has won the title in any of the top5 leagues ... the last was what ? early 90s ?
england coaches are so bad they not even 2nd class they like 5th class
english coaches are like german coaches were before 2008 before the klopp era and all the talent who came after

At the end of the day, a manager has about 1% of the influence as to what happens on the pitch.
Having an elite manager like Pep wouldn’t make Bristol Rovers reach the premier league.

Tuchel is one of the most over rated managers around. The social media tacticos love him but his delivery doesn’t match up. Only won a cup at Dortmund (poor compared with Klopps record there), domestic trophies at PSG only before being sacked mid season when 13 points behind Lille, fluked the CL with Chelski in the COVID season thanks to Pep cocking up the final, then took over Bayern in March, promptly knocked out the cup and the CL to might of Villareal, and was top of the league on arrival but only scraped home thanks to Dortmund bottling it. Then last season got given the best CF in the world and one of the most sought after CBs and could only manage 3rd place, knocked out the cup by part timers. Didn’t win any really big games, best result probably the 1-0 home win to knock out Ars in the CL quarter final.
