    Most mid-range and all luxury Staunton chess sets I’ve come across include two extra queens. I didn’t see extra queens in your presentation. Does this set come with two extra queens or can you purchase them separately? This set is currently being used again in the 2014 World Chess Championship between Carlson and Anand in Sochi Russia.

    We've had a lot of comments on this set, and next to the comment that I set up the board incorrectly (I'm SO SORRY!), the widest comment seems to be a dislike of the knights.
    But I have to tell you: after handling this set for a few years, it's rather growing on me -- I really like it! After getting past the 'unusual' shape of the knight, I must say that the pieces all have a very handsome, elegant styling, and the knight fits in perfectly with the overall vision of the set. I think some other chess fans are feeling the same way

      @AccientChess I think the same way as you. At first, I feel the knights design a bit strange but then the more I look at it the more I like its usual style, very characteristic. • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  6 лет назад

      Thanks for the message. I don't know what the actual championship boards are made of, but I would guess Walnut because that seems to be the standard for DGT boards. The board shown in this video is sheesham wood and maple, probably not what the champs use.

      Thanks for your reply. So Rosewood is not considered championship material either ?

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  6 лет назад

      I think the DGT makers dictate a lot of what goes on at that level, or try to at least -- so there's less choice and variety than there would otherwise be. During the 2012 championship, I actually analyzed a photo to determine the dimensions of the board they were playing on. I can't seem to find my marked-up photo here in the studio, but it must have been 55 mm squares. Here's the company's web site www.digitalgametechnology.com/index.php/products/electronic-boards

      www.chessbaron.com/chess-X2077.htm
      That's a good price for these sets. There are also sets with the DGT magnets or whatever they have - for boards that automatically report the position ... those are very expensive!
      There are also unauthorized sets much less expensive. I have some of those ... will be listing them soon. You may find one on eBay searching 'championship chess set'

    Actually I now love this set since my last comment of 6 months ago and it has taken its place as my 2nd favorite (the 1st being my William Pinney "liberty" set utilized in Reshevsky~Kashdan US Championship, 1942) It really grows aesthetically with time. And the fingers become used to the piece shapes, the feel, the weight. so give it some time. The king's design is very elegant. When Jaques introduced the original ppl also had mixed views and 71 yrs later was named the official international set. So don't dismiss it just yet, it's a radical, refreshing concept that challenges and beats the mundane basic fide german knight "toy looking" set.

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  5 лет назад +1

      Nice comment! I am rather fond of the idea that every couple of years they break out the special 'championship' set and the best minds in the world go at it.
      Also, I happen to agree about the standard FIDE wooden "German" knights. To me, it feels like the 'cheapest' choice. There are so many elegant and handsome knights in the world of chess -- why settle for a quickly chopped-out, undetailed set?

    • @conjured_up_skeletons6178
      @conjured_up_skeletons6178 5 лет назад

      Thank you. the pentagram knight, how can I ... I've been thinking and still don't know how to best describe it. "Ugly" is definitely NOT the right word for that piece. I used to think it was weird, that I don't care if its what the elites are playing with, etc. The best I can say is the piece "belongs" with the set. No need for reshaping of it or modification. I feel I've cultivated a mature opinion about it and that is perhaps 'abstract art that has taken concrete existence in the shape of a chess knight'.

    Congratulations! A beautiful and meticulous comparison of styles of chess pieces. I really can not understand so many negative criticisms of the distinctive design of this set of chess pieces! I remember the first time I saw this beautiful game of pieces in action when watching videos of the Anand x Carlsen match of 2013, and how I was amazed by the beauty and simplicity of the design of these pieces, which very cleverly and happily changed the style of pieces of chess on the market.
    I particularly appreciate the long-lined appearance of the pieces, supported by a simple yet elegant base. I also love the distinctive and unique details of the upper parts, especially the king, bishop and horse. From what I saw during game videos, this new design greatly improves the overall view of the pieces on the board and as a result should facilitate our analysis during the game.
    If there is something negative in this set of pieces, it is certainly very high price compared to the market average of other models. For me for sure it will always be a dream of consumption and for this I will be accompanying its sale value, in case of possible reduction in price, acquire it.

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  6 лет назад

      Jose, thanks for the very thoughtful comment. Although I understand people's varying opinions of chess designs, I feel those negative responses are heavily weighted by the familiarity and entrenchment of the well-known Staunton stylings. I agree, this design makes the pieces all the more distinctive on the board, allowing for good viewing, and the long, smooth form is a simple and elegant touch.
      I am going to be getting some off-brand editions of this set (much less expensive!), and when I do, I want to make a video specifically comparing the 'branded' and 'off-brand' pieces, so you can see if that extra hundreds of dollars really buys a better quality. Drop me a note if you haven't seen any postings by me about that, in the next few weeks.

    • @josemenbh
      @josemenbh 6 лет назад

      Uuuhhh! Great news! I will be following this new possibility with great interest because, as I really suspected, design linked to a "personal brand" was the main reason that excessively increased the final cost of the pieces.
      I am sure that if they are produced in large quantities and in a more economical way, the price should reduce greatly. In my opinion the differential of these pieces is its beautiful design, and therefore would still buy it with a slightly lower quality, but with a fairer price.

    Cannot beat the original Staunton style from 1849 (?). I guess it doesn't much matter what set they use at this level as the players could play blindfold almost as well as they can sighted. The pieces just allow the rest of us to watch the game!

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  9 лет назад

      I would expect they play best over a real set. This design isn't my favorite, but I am impressed that they take such a bold departure from the familiar pieces in this high level tournament. My favorite design for playing would probably be the set made for the Simpson's in the Strand, circa 1820. Of course, it's not too possible to be objective now that we are thoroughly acquainted with the usual Staunton design, such as used in the Fischer/Spassky and subsequent Karpov/Kasparov matches.

      Thanks for the good comment. For me, the German knights are a little too simple, kind of just 'blocked out' -- although the sets can be very nicely made. I prefer the French staunton pattern, where the knight heads are more horse-like, still simple and dignified. It's amazing how much variation there can be in knight's heads, even while other pieces have less variation. The knight's heads in this Championship set are certainly something different!

So Studio Anne Carlton is one, a long time big chess set maker, and DGT is the big electronic board maker, for automatic capture of moves in tournament games. I'm sure they all have their lawyers and representatives showing up in nice suits with brief cases, making each other offers they can't refuse. Chessmen design should be by their nature of move... like BISHOP is triangle ship what we see in modern chess. ROOK is like a tube or pipe. ... Ok.... But what about KNIGHT.... When its capture eight square each move like a circle.... So its shape should be quite similar to a stick with a ball.... Cause all peices are have some sign of their move instead of KNIGHT.... SO new shape f NIGHT shuld be designed...... this is my opinion
    IN MY OPINION THE CHESSMEN USED IN KASPAROV VS DEEP BLUE MATCHES IS THE MOST BEAUTIFUL

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  7 лет назад +1

      Time Wheel
      It's actually a very modern (20th century) idea that pieces should have a geometric quality that relates to their moves on the board. This was taken to extremes in the modern sets as shown here:
      ruclips.net/video/tldweVpBZhU/видео.html
      The idea of considering a knight's move as covering a circle is new to me -- I have rearely heard it described in that way and never seen that suggestion for the knight's shape -- but I find it very interesting!
      The pieces from Karpov vs Deep Blue are a very standard set, similar to the Fischer vs Spassky or Karpov vs Kasparov sets. A set like that can be found here:

      That's just your opinion time wheel, I never became too fond of the K-DB '97 set which is the '72 championship set with those funny looking bubble-headed bishops. Give me a William Pinney or a Dubrovnik 1950 any day.

    What brand are the chess board?

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  8 лет назад

      +bigboy gil Thanks for the question. The board shown in this video is not representative of the actual championship boards. This one shown has 50 mm squares and is from a factory in India -- doesn't have a brand name that I know of. The boards they used in the actual championships are DGT (digital game technology) boards of 55 mm squares.

    Your meant to pull the pieces from the bottom of the cardboard so your not tearing the cardboard. 😖

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  3 года назад

      Hunh? You can't pull them from the bottom. Cardboard is there. To prevent tearing all you can do is pull out the tabs and allow the cardboard to unfold.

    I know that this set has been around for 7 years now. It is used in both the World Championship match along with the Candidates Tournament. Me personally I think that the set is ugly. Especially the Knight design. There is a Knight similar to the chiseled Art Deco style of the Knight & I think that it is a much better looking Knight. It comes from the Romanian/Hungarian chess set. I personally prefer the look of the Romanian/Hungarian set over the World Chess Championship set. The reason I like the Romanian/Hungarian set. Is because it is a blend of Western & Eastern European Staunton set design. Too bad this isn't the set used in World Championship and Candidates matches these days. I own the Red Stained Boxwood version. It looked really good on a granite printed vinyl board.

      Thanks for the interesting comment. I do find the Romanian Hungarian set a nice design -- but then, I find many designs very appealing. Where championships are concerned, I am especially fond of Frank Cammarata's design that is used in the St. Louis tournaments .. but we all have our tastes. I think the idea of this Championship design was to strike out with something new -- and indeed it has. I've started to get used to it, and I become fond of the special place it holds as it is used in the Candidates match on into the championship.

      +Taw Moto I know, isn't it embarassing? I mentioned it at 14:50 -- oops! Hope that didn't distract you too much from the view of the pieces. They're pretty interesting --

    • @tauicsicsics
      @tauicsicsics 8 лет назад

      Yes, interesting pieces, thanks you for the review.but I also wanted to mention that there is a world championship table, special for this set, which has the square of 50mm.I also am curious if they usr 50mm or 55mm table. shop.chess.co.uk/Official-World-Chess-Championship-Chess-Set-Boar-p/cb04616.htm

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  8 лет назад

      +Taw Moto I have looked into that question, since I was considering offering a board with the set. The world champions played on a board of 55 mm squares, not 50 (as are shown in this video and in the listing you referenced). Although the 50mm/~2inch boards are 'acceptable' standard, the 55mm/(2.65~2.75 inch) boards are more the preferred tournament standard, from what I've seen.

    • @tauicsicsics
      @tauicsicsics 8 лет назад

      Indeed, alyhough everyone reccomends 76-78% ratio between king diameter and square size, all tournaments are played on DGT boards, which are 55mm, so this it is not respected at all.I also researched a lot în this aspect and I still don't understand why this happens.Maybe because DGT won't make smaller boards?:)

    • @tauicsicsics
      @tauicsicsics 8 лет назад

      Also I think USCF imposes 57mm boards, which are huge

    I sincerely believe it was made for the coronation of Magnus. The whole thing about its pieces being based "on the columns of classical buildings"... and whatnot, LoL what a load. The designer is trying to be H. Staunton. I cant appreciate the knight, I'm sorry

What's even worse is if you go through all the trouble of making a video, then realize you made a silly mistake ... and for the next decade you're getting comments from people who don't appreciate a thing but are enamored by their personal ability to criticize what they see. Go make some videos, Mr M. send me a link. I'll destroy them.

    Not very new or nice design, too expensive ,only ebonized boxwood for dark pieces, bishop looks like a sex toy, Queen looks like a lamp post, not nice at all.This lad likes them , there not selling as well as they thought , many chess players not mad on them.

    Knights are important, especially as this is the most disappointing piece in many chess sets (most of the Lichess ones look like CAMELS). Everything is right about these pieces, but the paper container is not a good idea. It will wear down the pieces in time. Planned obsolescence on the manufacturer´s part?

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  2 года назад +1

      Nice to hear an appreciative review of this set. I think the paper holder was a failed attempt at something clever. It's very difficult to get the pieces in and out and easy to tear in the process. Later editions have sturdy foam in place of the folded paper thing, and the foam has specifically sized holes that firmly hold each piece. I think it was more a lack of planning in the original packaging.

      @@AncientChess I like the slight abstractions. I made the mistake of looking up the price of these chessmen... Pricey. That"you can get anything on Amazon" is not true: so much plastic, and "handmade" pieces that any mediocre carpenter could do a better job of (apart from the really pricey ones, and they are few).

    awful, the previous knight design was better. Sinquefield Cup chess pieces are so much better than these. they should have used House Of Staunton. nothing like putting a cross on an "Indian" crown or turban. can't go wrong with a Jacques design.

    • @AncientChess
      @AncientChess  9 лет назад

      vassili osipov Yes, this design is very controversial! The knights in particular venture well into new territory and would not be considered standard by many players. The thing I like most about this set is just that it is different, and shows that innovation still lives in the game.
      I agree completely regarding the sets used in St. Louis matches. Excellent!! They were designed and custom made specifically for the St. Louis tournaments, including of course the Sinquefield and the US Championships, by Frank Camaratta -- one of (if not THE) leading expert(s) in Jaques and Staunton designs in the world. His expertise shows! I have asked him about those sets and he tells me that at this point they are available only by commission, individually made.
