In case anyone is wondering, nestlings usually expel a fecal sac after each time they eat. This is what the parent bird is looking for after feeding them, along with anymore that’s in the nest. When nestlings are very young they are unable to completely digest their food, and the parent will eat it as it contains nutrients (coprophagia). But as the young get older and are able to fully digest their food, then the parent will collect it and dispose of it after it leaves the nest. If this isn’t done, feces left in the nest can lead to bacteria, other microorganisms that can be harmful to both the young and the parent birds.
