Disgorge - Deranged Epidemic (Guitar cover)

  • I finally got around to learning a Disgorge song! :) This is the first track off of their debut, Cranial Impalement. This was pretty tough to work out by ear, and I almost certainly got a few things wrong, but I’m in the ballpark I think. The genius of these riffs becomes more apparent as I work through them! One of my all time favorite bands.
    The guitars on this album are tuned to what seems like C# standard, but it's slightly flat, so the lowest string is between C and C# in A440. This is somewhat similar to what I encountered on Bloodchurn by Suffocation, but for that album it was slightly sharp. As I was learning the song, I pitch-shifted the original track 49 cents sharp, at which point it matched A440 C#. On this recording, I actually recorded the guitars in A440 tuning, and pitch-shifted my track down to match the original tuning. It’s a bit of a mess, I probably should have just retuned, but... ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
    I muted the upper 4 strings of the Washburn with a paper towel, since this song is played entirely on the first three strings of the guitar, except for a single solitary note (can you find it?) which is high enough on the fretboard for it not to matter.
    I’m using the Powerball sim on the AxeFX ultra, with some post EQ as well. I tried to get a super scooped nasty tone to match the album, while still getting a little midrange. It’s not my favorite tone ever, but it gets the job done.

    Impressive work ! Any advice for someone that is worshipping this kind of guitar playing ? Exception made of the indispensable metronome exercices and everyday practice :) Anyway glad to see people worshipping this album, 1999 was the shit for (real) brutal death metal. I might record an old-school Devourment cover these days... Cheers from France !

    • @thinkpad20
      @thinkpad20  4 года назад +4

      Thanks for the kind words! Honestly the best practice is just to learn songs or riffs that you like. I usually drop an MP3 into Reaper and from there I can slow it down so that I can pick out the notes being played (which is often one of the hardest parts...) and loop sections over and over until I can play them smoothly. These days I don't do a ton of metronome drills, but if there's a riff which demands a technique far enough outside of my wheelhouse, I might isolate it (or variations on it) into an exercise and practice that to a metronome. For that reason I'll also often try to match the click track in Reaper to the song, which makes it easier to make these loops. But that can be a lot of work -- I did that on this track, which they definitely did not record to a click so there are prolly 50+ slight tempo changes lol.

      @leomiaud3610 4 года назад +1

      @@thinkpad20 Thanks for your answer, I do the same stuff with Reaper so I guess I'm on the right path :) Now it's about time and motivation haha. And yeah the tempo changes are one of the most tricky things in that style of music, sometimes I wonder how it is possible to play this kind of stuff in a live situation, also with the fact that they are sometimes playing even more faster ! (especially Disgorge and Gorgasm). Pure madness !
      Looking forward for other covers on your channel, it's always inspiring and motivating to watch for beginners/intermediate like me :) Cheers !

      Léo MIAUD Léo MIAUD awesome, sounds like you’re well on your way! Time and motivation are always the biggest barriers. With enough time and motivation I’d be putting out Putridity and Neurogenic videos - but I’m not at that level right now so I stick within my abilities haha. I hope you get to record some stuff assuming that’s a goal! Stick with it :)

    C# standard but using the 7th string? How?

    • @thinkpad20
      @thinkpad20  3 года назад

      I have some notes about the tuning in the description; it’s not actually C# but a little flat, but yeah. It’s only a little more than a whole step above a normal 7th string, so I think most strings would be able to handle the tuning.

    • @noir371
      @noir371 3 года назад +1

      @@thinkpad20 I forget that standard for a 7 is B lol I'm used to drop A. Still seems a bit risky for the guitar

      Ben Donahue nah just use the right string gauge. In fact that guitar I think I tuned it to a high F# on top. Can be nice to have extra high notes instead of low ones :)

    • @Wind-nj5xz
      @Wind-nj5xz 3 года назад

      @@thinkpad20 Isn't 0.010 the most common string gauge? if that's the case the strings should handle it just fine except for the high E string

    • @thinkpad20
      @thinkpad20  3 года назад

      @@Wind-nj5xz depends on the strings, but plenty of 10s will go up to F#. otherwise you can get smaller gauges. Point is, anyone can tune to whatever they want as long as they pick the right string gauges. Just play around with it. Worst thing that happens is you break a string!
