- JOIN ME as I take the 17 hour overnight bus journey from Karachi to Lahore. I had $480 in my bag when I got on the bus but noticed I had $0 a short time after the trip. When I finally get to my destination, more money goes missing and the cleaner admits he has stolen money! Never a dull time in Pakistan! This won't put me off my beloved Pakistan and will serve as a lesson for me.

I’m so sorry to hear about this Callum. Hopefully the cleaner will fully own up and return all the money. As you already know, the overwhelming majority of Pakistani people are kind, honest and welcoming. But sadly we do have thieves and pickpockets as does every country in the world. This is a small minority and does not represent the rest of Pakistan. I hope the rest of your stay in Pakistan is pleasant and joyful and please keep your bag containing all of your valuables with you at all times.
Correct. You don’t have to apologise on the behalf of your country. As you say thieves are everywhere, not a reflection on the country itself.

I lived in Pakistan for 2 years it theft was so uncommon, the people would leave thier keys in the thier car unattended.
I guess the poverty has gotten worse and inequality has risen so much, those that are desperate have resorted to theft.

I don’t know how you can say in Pakistan your not most likely to robbed as most are thief’s or bad minded who want to take peoples land and property also it’s known for black magic and people use and hate British people don’t take your daughters or single sons they will show you that all good as soon as they got there way with you they show there true colour iv been going every year Pakistan not by my own choice I go cos of my parents and uncles but it’s yettible third world country which has to much hate in my experience

I'm from the UK and I'm hurt that this has happened to you. Now and any future travels never trust anyone with money, passports etc. Always keep them hidden with you.
Unfortunately it does happen alot and it's sad, I've not only seen it happen in the cities but I'm a village type when I do go to Pakistan I love staying in the village more than the city but it happens all over not only in Pakistan.
A guy from the UK was shot dead in faislabad in a robbery, please stay safe as the economic crisis is really causing danger to people who have money..
Feel so bad for you honestly you can’t trust anyone I’ve just come back from Pakistan and I am so grateful for having guard’s with me on my stay I didn’t have to worry about anything going missing where ever I went but little greedy thieves are everywhere be safe tc stay safe and you need someone local with you who can trust and if anyone films you tell them to stop it’s not fair them telling you to stop when your filming one love ❤️

Hey Callum. I think It's probably the cleaners who have stolen the 480 $ too. If they admitted to stealing 1000 Rs from your bag why would they not steal the other 480$ if they managed to get a hand on it. A quick police report can solve this issue and they can find out by interrogating the cleaner. I don't think it got stolen on the bus as Daewoo is such a huge travel company in Pakistan and they wouldn't want to loose their customer base. But then again I could be wrong. The only thing to find out is whether you had the 480 $ or not when you entered that place in Lahore.
Its a hard lesson.
Best to keep valuables in either a money belt, pouch, or surgical sock around your calf. You double this one up to form a 'pouch' and then turn over the top. Its a good idea to keep money and cards in two places, with the sock as the default, just in case you are robbed.
cleaner mate. bit of advise how to keep money safe. Get a waste coat you can put on underneath it’s a thin garment like a tshit with pocket and zip. Keep your money there and then your spending money separately in a small wallet inside your zipper pockets.
Money, phones, Jewellery, power banks, cameras etc should be in your sight at all times. You should put a little padlock 🔐 on your bag zips.
so sorry to hear about the theft mate its unfortunate but there's no getting away from thieves no matter where you go...i visited Pakistan in 2015 for a close relatives wedding i packed a shilvaani to wear there only to discover someone cut my locks at the airport handling and took it out so i ended up borrowing my uncles as i had no time to shop
Sorry to hear about your ordeal mate. I have a lot to say being a brit Pakistani, as I encountered something similar over there and it was like 10x the amount. You get bad everywhere, it's true. But people that steal from others, I class them as some of the lowest scums you can come across. Not sure how such scums have the conscience to steal. Karma will hit them hard. I hope it won't put you off your love for the country. And it's a good thing that you're bringing it to light. Only problem though, when the country itself is led by thieves, what can one expect from the common man. Anyways, all the best man and I really hope there is a positive outcome for you.

Hi Callum travelling is a struggle in itself I know what your going through I travelled to Lahore last year to visit a friend and I had my ups n downs Being a traveller in any Country you need to have this rule of thumb Dont trust anybody especially when using transport of any kind keep your possessions close to you at all times and get some good rest BCOS travelling takes a toll on the Body and Mind Safe travels and all the best on your Journeys
PS I would suggest you trace back the time you last saw your money and then narrow down the suspects if you ask me I think the cleaners probably cleaned you out I know from past experience this is the majority of the cases in PK I don't think it would be a fellow travelers on the Daewoo Express either way Take Care and a Blessed Journey for you and your fellow traveler

I just recently vacationed in Pakistan...also traveled from Karachi to Lahore. Pakistani Airlines, quick 1 hour flight, 100 USD. Just a suggestion for next time 🙂

Any seasoned traveller knows that no matter how trustful people you travel with or meet on the way appear to be, you never leave your valuables unattended. A friend experienced a situation where a travelling companion stole some money for treatment for his mother, who needed to settle medical expenses.
I think tell the cleaner you know the score and to return the money or they’ll be met with harsher consequences. Call their bluff say you have them on camera and they can get out of it by returning the full amount.

Crime has gone up tremendously in Pakistan.Beware of your surroundings and don't get to comfortable with strangers.Just last week my family member was robbed while sitting outside his home in Karachi.
Get the police to question the cleaner, when they give him a good beating then he'll tell the truth.

Ah that’s bad man, sorry to learn of your money getting stolen, how you described your events it sounds as if the cleaners have swiped your money rather than on the bus, however as you said you didn’t check your bags on the bus that now is sus but it is more likely the cleaners may have as one of them admitted it but again you would have to get the police to shake the truth out of them. You got your iPhone stolen last time and no guesses Where that took place . Listen carefully mate as a kid used to hear stories about coming to Lahore , “you keep your eyes peeled and your pockets sewn “ that was the warning we got if we was coming to Lahore!. Well this is very common all over the world it has nothing to do with Pakistan. I live in UK and this has happened to us in UK, US, few more EU countries, our money was taken from the hotel safe here. So in a nutshell blame for such losses lies with ourselves we should not leave cash or valuables unattended or in hotel rooms.
I don’t want you make you look silly but the cleaner has admitted to stealing money from our bags when we were sleeping. That’s not our fault, that’s the Pakistani cleaner who is a thief and he swore on the Quran that he didn’t do it 😂. You try to justify it by saying it happens all over the world. At no point did I say it didn’t happen elsewhere, I’m stating that my money was stolen in PAKISTAN because that’s the country it was stolen. The cleaner has given me back $300 of the $480.

My advice to you would be don't leave your money bag around Evan iff you go to the loo
If you carry this amount of money, always always keep it on your body. We travel a lot and usually have little cash on us, we use the Revolut card to withdraw money from the ATM's if and when needed. And a card is easier to hide than a stack of cash. Take care.

Callum I'd say definitely the cleaners. They tend to be poor people who normally clean people's houses etc and they would take any opportunity to steal as even a 1k rupees is a substantial amount to them.

Nothing new Callum this happens in our own homes lol That is a lesson learnt for the cleaner, its totally wrong to steal but god knows how desperate he was, they get paid next to nothing and be doing long hours, dont get me wrong, there ws no need to rob but it was a test for him from Allah swt. Do feel for the cleaner now tht hes left without a job, can imagine how hed be feeling....the guilt and stress.... hope u recover the rest of the money....

Cleaner might have been used as scapegoat because of he was caught stealing , they wouldn’t just sack him, they’d hand him over to police. Someone else is involved , Miss Marple in me says , it’s someone else in the hotel , not a trustworthy place so clum should move out. It’s such a shame his trip has been ruined by a thief , hope he has travel insurance in place to recover his loss.

Make sure to keep the money in a safe or with you at all times, unfortunately when traveling you don't know who to trust
These thing's can happen by people that are less fortunate than us and when we go from another country they assume we are rich. As our basic lifestyle is a luxury to the less fortunate. Do put pressure on your pakistani friend to get the money back from the cleaner.
