💬Plot summary:
Fan Xian grew up in a small town by the sea with his grandmother, following a sudden visit of a poison master, his peaceful life quickly morph into one filled with danger and hardship. I love how there are so many people supporting Fan Xian lol He gets his butt saved a lot but at the same time he's not incompetent. This drama is great because there isn't any unnecessary scenes to drag the story
Much of the reviews I read about this drama says this drama has no fillers ( unnecessary scenes usually added to make the series unnecessarily longer, also the casting is carefully chosen to fit the characters in the novel, the lighting shows realistic skin colors of the characters( not too whitened $) the comedy scenes enhance Fan Xian personality character ) bottom line we are watching a great drama 🎭

sometimes knowing a bit of Chinese is really helpful because the language uses a lot of metaphors and idioms that are tough to cover in subtitles. a small example is when the shadow master tells fan xian that the overwatch council master will cover for fan xian, he actually says “do as you please. even if the sky falls, he (the overwatch council master) will support it back up for you.”
Another small example is when wang qinian tells fan xian that things are still unclear, but he says “the water is still too deep” (to see things clearly). this is perhaps coincidentally the same metaphor the emperor used when discussing using fan xian as bait to lure out the big fish in the capital a few episodes ago with his eunuch.
Technically it’s the same meaning, but definitely conveyed differently. this is not a criticism of the translators btw (they are doing a fantastic job), but rather just a comment hoping to inspire others to learn this beautiful, nuanced language
Well said. Not criticizing the translators either but it could have been better. For example, when Fan Xian was delivering the sad news and TZJ’s dead body to His wife , they simply translated as “TZJ, dead”. But actually Fan Xian said “TZJ, fought to death”. It has more info and sentiment in the sentence which was lost. Also, in this episode, Wang Qi Nian said to Fan Xian "it's normal that Yan Ruo Hai is cool to you". Being cold and Being cool with someone has the exact opposite meanings, and they used the wrong one. I see quite some of these, but They are already doing a good job in a short period of time, and given that the work is free to the audience, there's really not much to criticize. I'm just glad that I know Chinese so I dont lose the original flavours of the scripts.

First cdramas with a peaceful couple. I like how they aren't busy fighting each other for petty reasons all thru this series, rather wan'er has been like a support system for fan Xian and a safe space 🥺 it's nice this way.
These types of series give me hope for humanity again. In them you see HEROES-men and women who still believe in love, honor, honesty, loyalty, higher powers and all the great martial arts are fabulous! Thank you thank you, thank you again!!

I just finished the untamed and saw Xiao ZHAN in this, which is Wei Wuixian in the untamed so I decided to watch it. We’re both on the same level! Have fun watching this drama
I think it was filmed on the same location: the street at night, the inn, Teng Zijing's house, parts of the road look too similar. It's like they are living in the same universe.

It hit the right notes for me right from the beginning. Who can blame me I couldn't watch another minute of The Chang'an Youth.
Rewatching. I frankly think crown prince isnt purely a bad guy, he just being used by the aunty.

Reading the novel, my impression is that both crown price and second price were used by their aunt and also manipulated in several ways by their father to test and nurture their ambition and capabilities.

After reading the novel:
1. The crown prince has his own ambitions and obviously the desire to secure his position as the crow prince (of the emperor's 4 recognized sons, not counting Fan Xian, he is the 3rd oldest son. The oldest son, the great prince, son of Lady Ning can't be in line for the throne because of his mix heritage. But the 2nd son, 2nd Prince, is a direct competition to the title of crown prince. The 4th son, third prince, is still a child. ).
2. Currently, eldest princess is given the management of what they call the Palace Treasury (think if it like a feudal era version of a multi billion/trillion $$$ corporation in the modern world) that was founded by Fan Xian's mother and was used to provide the funding for the entire nation's treasury. After Fan Xian's mother was killed (which in the novel, it is the emperor who is ultimately responsible for her death) the government took control of that "corporation". The eldest princess is jealous of Ye Qingmei (Fan Xian's mother) for reasons like she isn't as capable as his mother (one example, the eldest princess isn't as capable of managing the Palace Treasury as Fan Xian's mother), she also has some sort of infatuation for the emperor (yes, her own brother), she has been "stealing" money from the Palace Treasury and gathering her own supporters.
3. When Fan Xian marries the princess (eldest princess' daughter), he will become the person in charge of the Palace Treasury. Meaning he will be the person in charge of most of the country's wealth. So the crown prince needs:
1. to prevent Fan Xian from ever gaining control of the Palace Treasury
2. or if that can't be prevented, than he needs Fan Xian to be on his side
The eldest princess:
1. doesn't want to lose control of the PT from which she is stealing money for herself
2. doesn't want her corruption to be exposed
3. she is in league with the empress (mother of the crown prince) or more accurately using her
4. she is having an affair with the crown prince, one main reason is to spite the emperor
The 2nd prince:
1. wants to show his father the emperor that he is also ambitious and capable of becoming emperor
2. he want's Fan Xian to be on his side (one reason being that Fan Xian will gain control of the PT)
4. The Emperor is aware of many things and he is secretly allowing some of the ambitions of his family members to run "wild" and is the mastermind behind several of the events. He is the 4th grandmaster, not Eunuch Hong. He knows Fan Xian is his son. He is the person who is ultimately responsible for the death of Ye Qingmei (because he was afraid that she would interfere with his ambition to conquer the world, and he feared her ideology. So he allowed for her assassination to happen by creating a situation where she was left without anyone to protect her and that would allow her enemies to take advantage of the lack of protectors.). He knows what is inside the box. He is aware that there is a weapon capable of killing a grandmaster (the sniper rifle). The sniper rifle and Wu Zhu are the only things in the world he is really wary of (he does worry about the other grandmasters, but he has a successful plan to have them killed. It's only the sniper rifle and Wu Zhu that he can't "predict" and control.). He is making his sons (mainly the crown prince and 2nd prince) prove themselves and compete for the throne.
5. The crown prince holds that title even though he is the 3rd son because his mother:
1. is the primary wife (i.e. empress, I don't recall seeing her in the TV series)
2. almost all of her family is dead (they were blamed for the assassination of Ye Qingmei and were all executed), meaning there isn't any member of her family that can influence the crown prince if/when he becomes emperor
6. The dowager empress, emperor's mother, never liked Ye Qingmei and even once sent her a long piece of white cloth to hang herself. Ye Qingmei returned the piece of cloth to the dowager empress (in the series, the white piece of cloth under the key to the chest is that same piece of cloth).

The drama didn't follow all the plot from the novel, but has its beauty.

This drama is extraordinary in the sense that most characters are not idiots. The most wicked woman is the Princess (Wan Er's mother). She wanted to kill FanXian because it will be interesting but the Crown Prince is not an idiot. The CP needs her support due to the wealth. Once the emperor knows - the CP will be in trouble but she would just say it's all the CP fault.

This is an interesting comment. I think everyone of us do have those sense of something is off something. It could be something out of the norm like a color, like a word being say, a certain smell, or taste, an abnormal behavior. But because there are just so much information going all at once going through daily life, you can't clearly thinking about it. You just subconsciously know something is off. That you may have feeling that. Hey this isn't safe, hey I need to get out of here. Or that this person seemed weird and dangerous. Instead of thinking, your anxiety level would go up. That is just an example. I think if you stop and thinking about all these things that your brain pick up but you don't usually think about it. You would realize there are a lot to your cognitive ability. I remember when I took extremely hard classes and or going through something emotionally intense. My brain will continuously working on things over night. That these things manifest in my dream. In this chase, he felt something is off. And actually stop, and figure out why he "felt" it is off.
