On the display it keeps track of how much gas it’s used. If you use the scroller wheel on the right handle bar you can scroll though temp, gas and odo readings. You can reset it after every fill up and the low fuel light comes on with one gallon left. Also, the headers are titanium and that’s the reason why most exhaust manufacturers don’t care to make headers for it. - 2018 R1 owner.

i tried all the modes on my 2020 r1. I simply ride in A mode all the time. Ive yet to ride it in the rain but C mode would be ok for that. Ive owned a 2008 r1 before with no riding modes like the newer ones so im used to it. I started riding in C and within a mile i changed it to B at the first red light. Then for my 2nd ride i realized A is not really unrideably powerful. Its just the normal engine mode..not anymore powerful than any other year or liter bike. Its simply a machine and it gives what you tell it to do.
I only ride in A mode. I'm an extremely aggressive rider. I remember when I purchased my 2018 after having my 2014 stolen. Driving from the dealer I didn't feel the power and didn't understand the hype of the bike. That all changed as soon as I hit the expressway. I love the aesthetics of the 2014 but I will NEVER go back after having this bike. I'll purchase the 2021 as a second bike and perhaps use one of them for track
Use the Fuel Consumption display as a gas gauge. It's WAY more accurate than a shitty fuel gauge. Also, the light comes on at 3.5 gallons consumed, leaving you 1 gallon in reserve.
I don’t know if this is similar to the one from 2019.... but I remember having to drive to meet my late husband cuz he ran out of gas. Gosh I miss him and Penny, his R1
Yep. The lack of a gas gage is crazy. I have a 2019 R6 and I still can’t figure out why they wouldn’t put a gas gauge on a motorcycle with a much tech as these bikes have ....it’s the year 2020. A gas gauge should freaking come standard ...,
Right? Like 95% of sport bikes don't have a fuel gauge haha. It's only been in the last few years that OEMs have started putting them on, and usually only the 1000's. Ex. gsxr1000, and zx10r
SuperBoomer95 my duke 125 has one (2019 model) but ktm does put the same display and software on the 125 and the superduke so that’s probably why. Same tech basically.
karl kukk my first bike was a 30 year old Suzuki GS1100EZ. KING OF THE SUPERBIKES. Absolutely terrible first bike. I was also 30 when I picked it up. Sport bike tanks have weird contours that don’t easily resolve into a float level system that accurately indicates remaining fuel. The best, and most common way of estimating range, is to keep accurate records of your fill ups. Regardless of the level indicated in the gauge, or lack there of, your personal riding habits are going to dictate your fill ups.
@@brandonkeithley7464 sport touring bikes are different. Alot of them have fuel gauges. But sport bikes like the gsxr, zx, CBR, yzfr, etc.. rarely have fuel gauges for both weight savings, and like mark said their tanks are usually weird shapes
There is actually like 1 bolt and 2 screws to remove what you called the gas tank or whatever. But that just removes the airbox cover which is also held down by 2 tabs of 3M or Scotch fasteners. And to remove the rank you remove 2 more bolts on the side and then the pivot bolt for the actual tank.
That single bolt isn’t holding the gas tank. It’s only holding down the front cover to the gas tank which is also attached with Velcro to the gas tank. The tank is held down by 2 bolts (one on each side of the bike). I own a 2016 R1 and removed the cover to get it painted.
I have a 2018 R1M and it doesn't have a gas gauge, but it tells you your exact gas consumption. I actually like it better than a gauge. Another feature they have is there is 2 different apps for smart devices.

The tank has more than one bolt. The bolt you are seeing juts holds the front plastic cowling on. If you take the top bolt out and the black side panels off you will expose the side tank bolts.
Its wicked that you are still able to do what you love. I'm jealous to be honest. I was supposed to take my motorcycle course this summer but the world went crazy. Keep up the great videos ;)
And also the ride by wire throttle system...this cables coming off the grip...much like the newer zx10r...the cables go to a type of servo which reads how much throttle your giving it ....the computer then takes that info and translates it to the amount that the computer wants to open the throttle bodies....believe it or not the bike is de-tuned from what its actually capable of due to euro 4 emission standards...and that electronic throttle system is one of the ways that they do it....for instance .....at 5k rpm you may be giving it 50% throttle but the way the bike is tuned stock it may only be giving you 35% of the 50% that your telling it to give you......its wonky as hell ...but the bike is capable of way more ...and if its tuned right it will come alive!!
Yeah my 2020 r1 is a bit wacky on the throttle. Yanky and torquey. And low rpms from a start it feels like you are starting from a stop in like 5th gear. It does that classic too low of a speed for the gear stutter. I too blame it on the magnetic throttle as opposed to a cable. Its strange and requires a total relearning of throttle control.
Had those same metal pegs on my R3, also it has the same one bolt fuel tanks deal. Though I always thought that the bolt was just securing the plastic cover that goes over the tank.
Why do you need a gas gauge? The low fuel light comes on with about 36 miles til empty. As a current R1 owner I can say you won't be able to ride this from full to empty without having to stop and rest your wrists/back. so it's never an issue
It’s just a bolt for the plastic tank cover ... the tank bolts are under the black pieces on the side and bold on the side as well as a long bolt perpendicular bolt under the front part of the seat that covers it ... when you take it apart for performance updates or just general maintenance you see the tank is very very securely bolted to the frame
My first bike was a ninja 300. It had one. I think a lot of the kawasaki series do. Not sure aside from the 300. But yes, the overwhelming majority do not have one
One more thing. the 2020 is full throttle by wire. No cables. The earlier models had cables and return springs that were connected to the module but not now.
A lot of more modern sport bikes don’t have gas gages. I have a 2018 636 and it just has the light too, I use one of the trip meters to track the fuel and I use the other to track oil
Motorcycles never had fuel gauges for years. When it started to cough and sputter one would flip the petcock to reserve and start looking for a gas station.
The 2011 ninja 650 has 0 bolts at the top of the gas tank, just 2 rubber bumps it hold onto and 2 bolts at the bottom, YZF-R125 only has 1 bolt on either end of the bike, interesting detail but it's like saying some cars have 5 spokes in the wheels, some have 6, doesn't really bear any significance lol
Hey Dude look at the original 1998 R1 it only has one bolt on the gas tank so not a big surprise as you think ,seriously I know your a young man but check it out,and yeah set a mode you like then after a while change them ,it literally like having a new bike ,if your gonna buy this sort off bike it’s a must.ride safe stay safe .👍
My first "big" bike didn't even have a low fuel light. You know you're low when you hit 100 miles on the trip meter, and you'e in the danger zone the engine starts chugging and you need to flip the petcock to reserve before it stalls XD
Yamaha does tend to recycle the parts bin. My 2009 Yamaha FZ6R has the same turn signals that they're using today. That's one of the reasons why I went with the Kawasaki Z900 over the Yamaha MT-09. I realized that soon after buying the MT-09 I'd end up having to spend around $2000 just to get it the way I wanted compared to the Z900 where I'd only change a few things. I may even keep the stock exhaust.
It's the same for my zx10r and most liter bikes. I can see on my digital dash that there is an option for it but it was only implemented in Japan and Europe to have it actually on
The 17-19 CBR 1000RR doesnt have a "gas guage" either. It has a low fuel indicator(which also then tells how much gas is left" and a current trip fuel consumption...pretty much everything but a guage that says "you have this much fuel left"...not sure why.
I wish seeing a cable operated clutch didn’t bother me, but I just love having that smooth hydraulic clutch and I expect one on that tier of motorcycle
My Ducati 748 doesn't have a fuel gauge, so just got to hope I'm near a petrol station or work out how many miles since I last filled up and when to start looking.
Yamaha is smart enough to not waste money on a lever that over half of riders will swap out for shorter ones in the first month anyway. Why waste R&D on something aftermarket companies will ultimately replace almost immediately?
It baffles my brain why the R1 doesn't have a fuel gage or cruise control like the MT-10 has because majority of the customers that buy an R1 are people that will ride them on the street so what gives Yamaha? It's not hard to code one into the computer right? I mean the MT-10 has the same engine and computer software just slightly different so it wouldn't be hard to integrate the two systems into 1 awesome system that the MT-10 can also have.
Everyone knows to check the gas in the tank you shake the bike inbetween your legs to feel the slosh of how much gas is left. I thought this was common knowledge? Also resetting the "trip miles on the dash can also give you reference of how long you have until very close to empty." 80s child here. My first bike was the Yamaha Seca 2 600 1992 model but i got her in 1996 at 15 years of age. Had a custom Vance n Hines exhaust 4 into 1...custom CORBIN seat... Was a close fight between the Suzuki Bandit 600...i did like that one and considered it highly . i considered no gas guage to be an honor? To learn like all of the beasts before us? just my opinion folks calm down. But really...a gas light isnt needed if you understand and love the machine like your suppossed too.

You don't need more than 1 gas tank bolt at the front.
It's the same for my zx10r and most liter bikes. I can see on my digital dash that there is an option for it but it was only implemented in Japan and Europe to have it actually on
My Yamaha Warrior 1700pc has no fuel gauge either, just a low fuel light....
You wanna play with my smoooth hydraulic clutch?
Casey Jones I see clutch. I play.
I tell you whats weird. Air temp is close to a heat source so never correct. Oil site glass is hard to see
I've owned 6 1000cc sportbikes, 5 ZX10's and 1 R1, none have had fuel gages.
My Ducati 748 doesn't have a fuel gauge, so just got to hope I'm near a petrol station or work out how many miles since I last filled up and when to start looking.
I want an r1 so bad. It's such a beautiful bike.
Yamaha is smart enough to not waste money on a lever that over half of riders will swap out for shorter ones in the first month anyway. Why waste R&D on something aftermarket companies will ultimately replace almost immediately?
Doesnt need a gas guage, lets you know when you have 20 mi to get to a gas station
CBR954RR no gas gauge. Daytona 955i no gas gauge. BMW R Nine T 1200 no gas gage.
Wow I'm early for once. I'm not even early for work
Everyone knows to check the gas in the tank you shake the bike inbetween your legs to feel the slosh of how much gas is left. I thought this was common knowledge? Also resetting the "trip miles on the dash can also give you reference of how long you have until very close to empty."
80s child here.
That bolt only holds on the tank cover there are two more hidden bolts under the side panels.
The rsv4 is extremely small, feels like less than a 600 (handles like it too), the R1 is a huge cruiseship in comparison :D
You’re a huge cruiseship
No gas gauge is just plain silly. Pegs are cast, not knurled. Logo on swingarm is cast, not stamped.
Its like the ferrari of bikes, next to panigale ofc
FZ09 all metal pegs. Wife says that the sparks are pretty.
Sorry to hear you lowsided your bike
I really wanted an R1, but the insurance premium would have been ridiculous 😔
gas tank bolts are on the side under cover
