Ratt Retrospective Part 4 1986

  • It's 1986 and the only thing slowing down are the record sales. Ratt puts out another solid album a year after Invasion, but they can't keep the pace up forever. The label pushing for fast albums, the nonstop touring, the substance abuse, and the pressure to keep up with a lifestyle takes it's slow toll on the band. In another installment, I go through the stories of getting this album done and the pressures it brought on Ratt. I love this album and even if Ratt were up against the wall, they still managed to pull another solid album together to support yet again, another tour grind. I hope you enjoy this one!

@@chabadoogi I agree quite a bit about how thrown into the mix of teased hair and generic ballads they got put into. I never personally thought they had big hair or that music that said one hit wonder. I always wanted Ratt to get their proper notoriety as a solid rock/metal band. Ratt were victims of circumstances and a cesspool of talentless copy cats.

    Extremely well done.
While theres always alot negativity & tragedy from around this time through Detonator,RATT need not make any apologies or have any regrets. They were massively commercially successful from basically their onset till the carpet got ripped out from the entire scene.
Headlined arenas from late 84 through 90 w first class openers Bon Jovi, Poison,Cheap Trick & Queensryche.
Consistently multi platinum, first rate touring act.
Whats more rock & roll than Stephen NOT being a note hitter yet snarling his way to so much success w purely attitude, delivery & sleaze?
Their brand is instantly identifiable to this very day & they continue to be featured in commercials, series & feature films.
Hats off to Crue & GNR for unprecedented unfathomable levels of sucess. But toss those aside, who else from that timeframe has the longevity, accolades & recognizable brand that Ratt does?

In my opinion Ratt wasn't declining on DU, It's one of their best albums.
I'd rank it perhaps on par with Invasion but out of the cellar is the best in my opinion.
I don't listen to their material after DU because they lost a lot of the metallic influence or sound in their music. I like the first three albums because they had more traditional heavy metal elements.

This album sounds great because it still had the classic Ratt sound.
I like the first three albums and I am not a fan of the post DU material.
Maybe it was a good thing that they didn't have time to experiment with their sound, it meant that they were going to release an album in a similar sound as the first two

    • @MaskedManiacReviews
      @MaskedManiacReviews  2 года назад

I think it sometimes is their best album. It kicks enough ass for me with Robbin still involved heavily.
You could be on to something with the idea that less experimenting meant they had to stretch their sound a bit more, but keep the same bite of the first two. I just wanted some more Body Talk style songs. Get a bit more grit and speed and evolve more into the heavier sound scene they were very capable of joining.

At the end there is a cut in the bottom right of that sealed copy of dancing undercover..that’s why it was 3.99 pre priced back then it was in the bargain bin.over pressed copies that didn’t sell…I remember when this album dropped and us kids in school didn’t hate it but it was considered no where as good as the Ep, cellar and invasion…

    • @MaskedManiacReviews
      @MaskedManiacReviews  Год назад

Yes this was typically what happened when a store overbuys a not super fast selling or underselling album. They have a punch in their store where they can punch a bunch at once. That leaves that little slot on the lp sleeve. They then would send those to the manufacturer/label and get some form of credit I believe

Good stuff. The waning of the concrete pirate colour look coincided with a similar move by Motley c. Girls, Girls, Girls to swim away from the copycat bands each label wanted to sign. Key element to the Beau Hill production was the use of minimal break between the songs so it deliberately slammed you into the next song and so dared you not to play each side of the vinyl in one go. Side 2 had some filler tunes though (including lyrical) despite Warren’s leads.

@@MaskedManiacReviews Dokken and Ratt are like two of my favorite glam metal or melodic 80s metal bands.
Dokken's music was less about sex, drugs and rock n roll. Their lyrics were typically more serious. Songs about heartbreaks, berlin wall, aids, even songs that were more philosophical like Will the sun rise, when heaven comes down.

Ratt was always a solid and respected band but they got lost in the late '80s shuffle like Quiet Riot and Dokken. It sucked they got blown away by Bon Jovi, Poison, and Whitesnake- who were definitely pop bands compared to Ratt's raw music. I wish they would've hooked up with Bob Rock as a producer.

Right on. With the loss of Robbin, it just made it harder to have that solid lineup anymore.

I watched a lot of interviews by all kinds of people abd in the 80s and 90s a million copies would be worth 20 million around give are take a few million half goes to retail so that would leave close to 10 million around every album guaranteed ratt with there track record was going to give a lot of people a big pay day after every album not to mention the road crew it's like 100s of people depending on them for there lively hood so yah they would be pressured to put out albums ASAP they would give them whatever they needed to keep the albums coming drug boozy women whatever just get that album out its millions just the album and I'm not sure what they made on tour but I assume a huge band like them wouldn't play under 10 grand including expense the road crew all get OK pay as well so the pressur would be on there a million dollar corporation that employs 100s of people you would definitely feel the pressur to keep everyone fed and housed

I work some long hours these days.
I appreciate you being into this series. This is why I did it. To support the RattnRoll and get old and new fans some Ratt stuff.
Sorry but lots of people love Bathory as well as myself and I'm almost done with part one. I'm definitely doing a full bathory retrospective.
Sorry if you aren't digging the waiting for these to get done, but it's just the name of the game.

I get wanting lots of guitars I have 4 I use to have 7 but seriously I only really play 2 one acoustic one electric that's seriously all any guitarist really needs and normally even the famous play 3 that is normally 2 stage guitars and one acoustic in fact most players no matter who it is generally play one 90 percent of the time all the other stuff is for show they may strum here are there on the other ones but usually it's that one guitar that you had for many years that you play and write on the myth is that different guitars have have different tone guess what its not true not when it comes to heavy distortion the guitar does nothing for the sound as long as you got a humbucker the gear will dictate the tone and sound 100 times more then the guitar so really you one need 2 electric with humbuckers and acoustic so when I see these people with a 100 guitars I just think why to show how rich you are I mean it's nice to play whatever guitar you want but it's not going to change your sound not with distortion so it's seriously pointless

Nikki Sixx fed off Robin Crosby, he was an energy vampire and Robin was just too sweet and easy prey for an imposter like Sixx, Robin had talent, Nikki Sixx did'nt

Well, I kinda don’t love the hard drugs happening. Nikki certainly had his own issues with it. I kinda wonder what the dynamic was and what he did try to help Robbin with to quit.
Energy vampire possibly, idk if he doesn’t have any talent. He can play bass better than my ass.

    • @Cookie-hg4xb

I think the Dancing Undercover cover is pretty cool , although they all look a bit miserable which is understandable considering the inner turmoil going on within the band at the time. I think it's a pretty good album , slightly better than Invasion but Out Of The Cellar is definitely the cream of the crop.

... Their songs have a liiittle more dimension to them. That doesn't mean I like them better, than Ratt's ... Ratt was great. Their top album would have been Detonator - If the production was a bit heavier, and more raw - and less polished.
