THE COST OF MEDICAL SCHOOL-- Is Med School Worth it?

  • One of the most frequent question I get is the cost of going to medical school and if med school is worth it or not. In this video, I compare the cost of private med schools to public medical schools, talk about the how long medical school takes to complete and finally other opportunity costs or things that med students miss out on by attending medical school.
    Hope you guys find this video useful!

    I once read a quote: Medicine is only for those who cannot imagine doing anything else.
    And I feel like it's absolutely true. As a med student and later a doctor, you sacrifice so many of normal things and events that if you are not working towards your dreams or living them it's really hard to be happy and successful.

    I was dead-set on medical school up until my second year of undergrad when I realized just how time consuming it is. Although I love medicine, it is not my main love. I'm passionate about enjoying life, spending time with friends and having a family. This was when I researched the Physician Assistant profession, which seemed like the perfect fit. Although I did have to give up a great deal of the autonomy that MDs have, it balanced with the amount of time I saved to have afford a wedding, beautiful house and have 3 children. As a PA, I still get to practice medicine and am still a life-long learner. I still will have opportunities to teach/train new generations of PAs. I was able to become a PA (graduated) when I was 23 years old (3 years of undergrad and 2 years of PA. I'm from Canada), saved years of my life not in school, entered the work force earlier and didn't accumulate as much debt as I would have in medical school. It IS possible to practice medicine and enjoy life when you're young. Do your research and consider what you truly desire!

      Thanks for your input. I've been seraching around the web for peoples experiences in each field.
      I'm struggling deciding on whether I should become a physician or physician assistant. I am not bothered by the lack of free time, my concern about med school is the cost and the amount of debt I will be in.
      But, for some reason, med school still 'calls' to me. Urgh if med school wasn't so damn expensive I'd choose it in a heartbeat. I still have time to think before I'd apply to med or PA school so hopefully I can make a decision eventually 😂

      @@user-bz9pr9cb4c Hey, what'd you wind up doing? I'm on the fence. Might transfer to nursing and try to go PA versus my current route which is engineering-->Physician or PA but I'm having a lot of second thoughts and I have no passion for engineering (nor is the field as lucrative as people think). I just want to feel secure in my future hhha

    One major cost to add was residency interviews. I went on over 30 interviews this season (mix of advanced, prelim, and transitional) and the costs add up quickly. Between travel, hotels, and food it is very expensive but necessary. Great video Jamie! Totally agree with you that it is worth every penny and that there is nothing I would rather be doing. - Mike

      I used a portion of my refund check I had saved and some of the money that I had saved from before medical school. I also tightened up the belt a little bit with my spending. It was definitely not easy but most medical schools urge you to borrow a little more during that timeframe in order to cover the costs. It just smart to have a plan in place and never too early to start thinking about! - Mike

    In Spain I pay 2200 euros /year (about 2500-2700 dollars) and my degree (Pharmacy) is one of the most expensive ones, because the cost of science and engineering degrees is higher. Humanities, literature, law, etc are cheapest, about 1700 euros/ year.
    It's incredible how expensive are the studies in USA 😰😰

    In Greece medical school, as any other greek university is totally free, with no tuition fees at all. Also free medical books (translated in greek, such as guyton physiology and all american textbooks) are provided in all students. Also there is free food for all students and free accomodation. All the education and equipment is provided for free in all students by the greek goverment.

      _bio macromolecules The competition is quite big and you must pass the greek high school exams with score 97-98% to get in. But the program is taught entirely, only in greek languige. All the education in greece is free, provided by the goverment, from primary school through undergraduate and postgraduate deggrees.

      Anastasia Kafali I'm not sure. I always attended private schools. There are public libraries but I don't think students can own books for free. I know there are scholarships, specially for people who live outside the capital city (that's where most public universities are). If they get a scholarship they can have some benefits on accommodation, food and supplies but I don't think they can get them for free. Kids do have free food at schools but not at university level. As I said I'm not entirely sure about how this works 😉

      But taxes are much less in the US! Granted, it depends by state. Places like New York and California have more high taxes BUT here in Florida, we have very low tax rate, and 50-75% of our undergrad tuition can be covered by a bright futures, which is like a government scholarship but more guaranteed... Also going into student debt is not a bad as it may seem- in Europe, a lot of school is payed through your taxes, whereas we pay for it through low-interest loans. Either way, everyone still pays for their schooling. ^-^

    Hi Jamie! I'm a 2nd year medical student from Portugal and things are very different here. We enter medical school right after high school and it's much much cheaper most of us don't have debt because our parents usually pay for it. We have 6 years of medical school and then we train some years in hospitals kind like your residency. It's very interesting to see the differences and I love to watch your videos because of that. In the US it takes longer bc they make you take a lot of classes that have NOTHING to do with your major, it's a waste of time and money. Where as in Mexico or Portugal you are only taking medical related classes, it's the way it should be in my opinion but the US is pretty stupid in that way.

      wouldn't be so sure about the happiness part but the education here has been pretty ok. children have a free education as well and private schools do exist here but are not as common as somewhere else. buuuut we have a lot of problems as well and the current government is trying to tear down the whole system with budget cuts. and even though the university is free, there's still classism in the system like for example most of the university students do come from families where one or more parents have a higher education.

    • @mayaalicia169
      @mayaalicia169 7 лет назад

      That is interesting to hear! I live in Florida, and I would not say that we have large issues with classism. In fact, we have a ton of South American immigrants, and many students here are the first in their families to get a college education. This whole immigration wave in Florida has gotten to a point where many of my caucasian friends know basic spanish, eat hispanic food, and listen to latino music because such a large percent of our population speak it. XDDDD Finland is more up north though, so I would imagine you guys get more immigrants from East Europe countries, right? Likeee Russia and whatnot...

      Joseph Rodriguez it is worth it if you get in a good specialty. 500k as an ortho surg can easily pass those who made $70k while you were in med school

    • @josephrodriguez4532
      @josephrodriguez4532 7 лет назад +13

      That's what's wrong with health care in the US. Everyone wants to be a top surgeon. What ever happened to going into medicine to become a family practitioner??? No wonder they're so many places that do not have access to health care! Everyone wants the top dollar and no one wants to provide health care to those who cannot afford it. Which is another reason I went to PA school. We're about serving those in need, not about making 500K a year. Earning an extra 400K a year does not mean you will be happier than someone who doesn't.

    • @WeAreObject
      @WeAreObject 7 лет назад +1

      you dont have to be a top surgeon though. Anesthetist, IN RAD,NUC RAD, cardiologist all make on average 400k. loans can easily be paid off which ergo makes the 70k you make while im in med school useless.
      And damn right pts have to pay a lot for healthcare, this isnt grocery shopping. Doctors,nurses, all staff must be paid and for MDs its a lot of money. They work on AVERAGE 60 hour weeks but most do 80-110 during residency. In addition the technology in a hospital is expensive, CTs are 300k alone.
      And then meds, research, trial, millions poured into said research.

    We're so lucky in Australia. Med school fees can be subsidised by the government if you get a Commonwealth Supported Position in the course. The fees are usually $10,000 a year. There are also the full fee paying students as well.

    Hi Jamie, you videos are amazing and really helpful keep up the good work.
    I have 2 questions which maybe you could help out with
    1. I have seen you using Anki in your videos, what time interval settings do you use? Have you adjusted them or do you just use the default?
    2. How do you review certain information before a lecture? What techniques do you use?
    Thanks

    In Brazil you enter in college right after high school, we have public medical schools (which are free and more competive than private ones), the college lasts for 6 years, in the private ones you usually pay arround R$9000.00 to R$15 000.00 per month + taxes and all the supplies needed. The final cost is arround 1 million reais, which is a lot considering brazilian minimum wage of arround 1k reais per month. In USP (one the best medical schools in Brazil) the number has reached 330 persons for each 1 free vacancy

    Here in Brazil you can go straight to med school after high school, but it lasts 6 years. After that the residency lasts 2-5 years depending on the specialty

      Also, the public med schools are free and the private ones usually range from 12 to 24 thousand dollars a year, depending on the us dollar rate(it’s really hard to get student loans)

    Here in the Philippines, we have no debts because we are supported by our parents but it's actually really expensive as well. However, you could enter med schools with scholarships offered as long as you would give service to your country at the end 😉

    This is a great video, it really got me contemplating about my future. However, when you mentioned that your friendships and relationships from the past often drift away, I became a bit worried. My whole friend group and my boyfriend plan on becoming doctors together with me. As a person in a relationship and a person wanting to become a doctor, I'm worried that I won't have time for my significant other anymore and vice versa. Jamie, I thought you have a significant other as well... how are you two doing? Is the med school busy schedule a burden to the relationship most of the time? Is it healthy to have a deep relationship during med school?

      So? I know this comment is 3 years old but I’ve never understood why people say “you would be 40 by the time you become a doctor”. Guess what? You will be 40 regardless of if you become a doctor or not. Mind blowing right?

    In England you just do 5 years at uni as well as that the government capped every unis fees to £9000 per year which is roughly $11,000 meaning overall for the 5 years its £45,000 + the cost of everything else which isnt too bad in comparison to America, hearing how much it costs in America is actually quite shocking especially since some countries offer uni for free

    After watching med school videos I've realised we are so lucky to have free education in Finland! Students also get about 500 euros a month for rent and living. The only downside is the work you have to put in to get to med school because the competition is tough :/
