  • Scott Travis of Judas Priest is a machine! Together with him Judas Priest were able to take their speed and aggression to an absolutely new level with Painkiller, which drum intro is still on of the most iconic intros to a Heavy Metal song. And in addition he is of course one of the nicest guys in Heavy Metal.
    And today, 33 years after he joined the band it is virtually impossible to imagine a Judas Priest concert without Scott behind the kit. So what we can do today is take a look at some of the isolated drum parts, performed by Scott Travis with Judas Priest live, see how accurate he is when playing live in front of thousands of people, and then discuss a little something about his playing style overall, seeing if he is actually as great as people say. Spoiler: YES!
    00:00 - Intro
    00:27 - Let's hear it!

    Not only is he outstanding technically, but he really brings a lot to the band with his stage presence. The dude is like 10 feet tall, and his kit just dominates the stage. I never saw Les Binks - he was before my time, but I saw Dave Holland with Priest and in my opinion there's just no comparison. Holland looked like he was at work, whereas Scott looks like he's having fun. I'm a drummer, been playing for 40 years. What he's playing ain't easy, He just makes it look easy.

    Scott is an awesome drummer..!!! His work w Priest is nothing short of perfection. When u see them live, it's hard to take your eyes off him because he's stylistic. There's NOBODY sitting behind a kit that can could replace him. His double pedal is like thunder. And having his kit set up to play both left & right handed gives him advantages that are unparalleled. I've seen Priest 39 times live now. And twice on this 50 Heavy Metal Years Tour. I can not envision see them w/I Scott. He is the Metal God of drummers. .!!!
    Shout out to everybody in Judas Priest for their R-N-R Hall induction. Richie, you got robbed. You should be there too. !

    I saw them when they were supporting the “Redeemer of souls” album and they were phenomenal. I’m somewhat of an amateur drummer myself so when I attended at a live concert, I always pay attention to what the successful musicians do live on stage as much as it is possible during a professional gig with all the lights, smoke, stage choreography etc. Scott was beating like a Swiss watch, undistinguishable from the studio albums drum parts. Humble and nice guy, handsome, athletic, hardworking, and goddamn hellfire when he starts playing. Other drummers that leave me speechless in this regard are Tommy Aldridge and the former Gamma Ray drummer Daniel Zimmerman

  • @SamPlaysBass49
    @SamPlaysBass49 Год назад +4

    Scott Travis is the best drummer Judas Priest has ever had and is a Mount Rushmore metal drummer. People who either don’t “get” drumming/music or are simply contrarians/elitists will say he “lacks feel” which… is both false, and ridiculous. He is technically gifted and stylistically brilliant. Les Binks is a close second to Scott Travis, another drummer with technical ability and finesse. Les, like Scott, was also very creative. Dave Holland was never terribly creative. He sat complacently under the music. It was enough with four juggernauts in the band, but Travis (and Binks) both elevated Priest, particularly Travis for the past 30+ years.

  • @michaeljohnson8058
    @michaeljohnson8058 Год назад +12

    I’ve seen and felt his next-level drumming live many times with priest. Perhaps people are saying “too technical” because he’s so great that Priest songs are easy for him; it looks almost effortless. But that is true of any master of their craft ( Jimmy chamberlain, vai, yngwie, maxim vengeroff ). If you’re unsure about S.T., maybe listen to Racer X, plus Scott’s the nicest guy .

    I've known Scott for many years. As Drummer world once said about Scott, he is the drummer's drummer. He can play any goove in any time signature. He is always on top of the beat, in the pocket and can drive the hell out of the beat. He really understands a drum kit and which cymblas to use based on the size of the concert hall.
    There is only one drummer I know of who is at Scott's talent level. That is Senri Kawaguchi. She is the best female drummer in the world. She is as smooth and as flawless as Scott is when it comes to being a drummer. In asia, she is known as the princess of manyy strokes.
    Anyway, when Scott lived here in Norfolk, he played in several local bands, even while he was with Judas Priest to keep tuned up. The funny thing is that in the local groups he played with, most of the music he played would be considered classic rock. Scott and the bands he played with could pack the house, but unfortunately, the lead singer he had was using the microphone stand as a crutch to keep himself balaced to keep from falling off the stage due to all the alcohol he consumed in between sets. I can't remember the singer's name, but Scott always said that if he wasn't a drunk, his singer was one of the best singers and guitarists he had ever seen.
    One little known fact about Scott is that he, also, worked at the Mars music store in Virginia Beach while he was with Judas Priest. He helped a number of other drummers improve their skill levels.

I knew who he was then but, hadn't heard him play yet. He blew me away that night. He took that demo tape with him to LA. He really did just want to be the drummer for Judas Priest. The venue that he wanted to set up and play in the parking lot was Hampton Coliseum in Hampton Virginia on the Screaming for Vengeance tour. He really is that good and has been for a very long time. Dissident aggressor is the best thrash song to come from heavy metal band , as a slayer fan the first time I heard the song was on the south of heaven album .

    You should check out Scott's drumming on any RacerX live stuff and then you wouldn't even bother asking this question :)

    scott travis is a sick drummer...but-for a guy who's on record stating he's all about the les binks era over the holland era, he sure plays the binks material with the robotic dave holland feel. i don't get where the swing went, because this guy can absolutely swing. it's super cool to watch him switch from open hand to traditional on a whim.

    Of course Scott Travis is an amazing drummer. He’s a machine. My only issue with his style is that he sounds like…a machine. This is why I prefer Les Binks’ style because he brings more feel to the table.

    Extremely skilled, combined with priest being his look up too's as musicians when Scott, was a kid. Only to become longivity percussion priest 30+years. Loyality wouldn't be Scott, lol
