    The inability to transfer water from the Lifestraw is a dealbreaker for me. Quite happy with the BeFree .6L. With the low weight of the filter, I can simply bring whatever bottles and bladders I need for the specific hike, and load up however much water I need when I’m at a decent water source. I can easily filter a couple of liters in a minute or two. Thanks for the great review.

      I carry the Katadyn system pretty much exclusively while hiking as well. They are so light and pack down so small it just makes sense. The lifestraw does have advantages though. I find it's rigid form better than the Katadyn for things like kayaking and anything else where you would put your bottle in a cup holder.

      What about using one of those Lifestraw straws? You can fill up however amount of containers, and just dip the straw into it if it fits, or pour the water into a cup and suck it through the Lifestraw straw. I haven't used any of these products yet. Just doing the research. But I like the idea of the versatility of a straw. You can simply suck it out of the source, river, stream, etc....

    This was super helpful. Literally had the Lifestraw bottle in my Amazon cart a few weeks ago but wanted to check out some reviews and other options first. Boom, here it is ;) This basically told me everything I need to know, and for now, I'm going to go ahead and pick up the Lifestraw. My main reason for needing it right now is to have more than 1 liter of drinking water when kayaking/fishing. In those cases I'm always on a relatively clean freshwater source, just need to filter it to drink. One of these would replace my current need to bring 2-3 Nalgenes for longer trips. I may try to pick up the Katadyn later too, because it sounds like more of what I'd need for backpacking.

    Well, I didn't think or knew I needed one of these, but it does seem pretty smart to have something as a backup if you run out of water! Love that the Katadyn can fill up other things! Thanks for the review, Jared! (By the way, I have a Katadyn water filter pump and always pronounced it Ka-tah-din like the northern terminus of the AT, LMAO! I've been wrong all these years!)

      Glad the video helped! I have been carrying the Katadyn as a "just in case" bottle. Thankfully so far I haven't needed it. And I'm terrible at pronouncing everything haha. People correct me all the time.

    Really good video, just what we needed to know really.
    One question from someone who haven’t tried filtered water before.
    Is the taste that bad that you
    would need the carbon filter?

      Sorry just now seeing this. I think the flavor from the Katadyn is totally fine. Not bad at all, but mileage may vary depending on your original water source. Most of the water I run through the system are Appalachian Mountain creeks which are probably pretty clean already. The lifestraw carbon filter does help the flavor slightly by making the flavor just a little more neutral like a bottle of Aquafina from the store if that makes sense.

    Would you be able to transfer water out of the LifeStraw bottle to cook if you remove the carbon filter?

    • @HikeSoloOutdoors
      @HikeSoloOutdoors  3 года назад +1

      Not easily, if at all. The reason you can transfer water from the Katadyn is the ability to squeeze the bottle. The bottle is more of a bag than a traditional bottle. Because the lifestraw is hard plastic that can't be squeezed, the water is not able to be filtered back out of the bottle.
