  • Chris Barber builds the Cash Flow statement in Power BI using the indirect method (which is permissible under both IFRS and US GAPP). This method starts with Profit Before Income and Tax from the Income Statement and then adjusts for all the non-cash items from the Income Statement and Balance Sheet.
    If you have not watched Chris's two previous videos in this series, on how to build the income statement and the balance sheet in Power BI, / @londonbusinessanalyti... , it may be helpful to watch those first.
    The dataset shown in this video is at github.com/MarkWilcock/lbag-o...

    Thanks Chris for the video. In the cash flow statement, there is cash movement (at the bottom of the cash flow statement). Is there video or guidelines to build it? Thanks.

    This is fantastic. I am 2 years behind posting, but wow this is such a great resources. Huge props to the team! QQ: Did the video for the Income Statement Piece change? The current Income Statement video on the playlist is from 3 years ago, and doesn't seem to have the same format. Any guidance here would be fantastic!

    Thanks for the videos Chris, super helpful for our team. We are trying to follow the CF process and are running into some challenges when merging the IS and BS. Is it correct that the IS model you that feeds the CF is different than that created in your video from 4 months ago? We notice income statement layout you walked us through is different than the BS and CF layouts.

      Thanks Nate. Yes - I'm using the SWITCH statement approach in this instance for all 3 statements. This is different from the TREATAS approach of matching the accounts in the first video, but both with return the same result. If you want to do all 3 in one report, I would go with the single SWITCH approach for all 3 especially given Microsoft recently announced performance improvements for this formula.

    Hi Chris, thank you so much for your videos I tried creating the CF but after appending the three statement layouts, and applying the Actuals nothing is showing on the CF. I saw that someone else had the same problem in the comments but your resolved it outside ahhaha do you think you could advice?

    Hi Chris, this is another fabulous video. Well done. I tried creating the CF but after appending the three statement layouts, and applied the Actuals with Subtotals & Operator, nothing is showing on the CF. Please do you know why?

    Do you have a video on the direct method? I would like to use it to present the cashflow forecast (not historical).

    • @chrisbarber639
      @chrisbarber639 2 года назад

      Hi Selina,
      We don't have a video on the direct method as of now.
      The direct method should be far simpler from a BI perspecitve (if not necessarily from a data collection) as it is an addition of all the cash in and out flows for a business.
      However, if you've an example you'd like to discuss feel free to reach out. I'm on LinkedIn as Chris Barber at Avanade.

    Hi Chris, I have checked your model and identified an error with measure 'Balance Sheet change month on month' as it doesn't pull out values but instead says:
    Error Message:
    MdxScript(Model) (690, 24) Calculation error in measure '_Measures'[Balance Sheet Change Month On Month]: A table of multiple values was supplied where a single value was expected.
    Could you please check it as I ended up with the same issue and when trying to overcome it I get monthly change only for BS rows and nothing for CF. thx

      @chrisbarber639 2 года назад

      Hi Artur,
      This is most likely being caused by the VALUES part of tha calculation. You can change this over to MAX, to check if that's the case.
      If it is, you just need to make sure that in the visual you have months/year in the context the calculation is being done.
      Hope that helps.
      Chris

      Thanks Chris, really great videos for finance guys whom crunch these 3 statements on static excel spreadsheets. I have a quick question, can we use these template files for our real environment by replacing and aligning the data model coming from our ERP. Thanks Sajid
