    The figure skating is like a metaphor for her cutting. I love the subliminal message.

    I've been searching for this film for 7 years, I've remebered everything about it except for the name and now found it by chance. I love it and it made a great impact on me. Thank you a million times for putting it up.
    Also the mother is horrible...

    The mother is played by actress Sean Young and a lot of people find that's she's irritating. She's perfect for this role..."ice cold."
    This book/movie is by Steven Levenkron, Ph.D. (he treated Karen Carpenter). He also wrote The Best Little Girl in the World.

    This is such a powerful film. The act of cutting is not often brought up, but it is a very serious and very deadly issue that needs to be addressed. Each character portrayed their roles beautifully. I only wish that if someone sees this movie and is a cutter or knows someone who ... read moreis cutting that they will learn that this issue is no joke

  • @AlexisAlways1

    The therapist is played by actress Rhea Perlman (Cheers) and she's the ideal therapist. Having an office inside a mall is a great location. It's genius and also show's she cares. Where do teens "usually" love to go...the mall. Too bad therapists in the real word don't think of this. The book is called, “The luckiest girl in the world!” by Steven Levenkron.
    The opening scene showing her ice skating is symbolic with cutting/self-injury. The blades on her ice skates cuts into the ice.

    @blue1bubbles I have been cut for 3 years. On arms, wrists, legs, stomach... My parents don't know it even though we are very close. It IS possible for parents -to be blind. And... you're right with this 'full time job'. It's really hard to hide scars and pretend you're ok but after some months... years, you become the best actor ever.

    ya, and it also depends how sensitive person is and self confidant...but not many teenagers are strong to avoid consults from other kids at this age. honestly, i hated highschool cause i was different from other girls, just because i didnt want to be clone. but i didnt have on my mind to hurt myself, but i waited and tried to become better than them, and show them "who's the boss now", now after 8 years, i did show them who i really am and how lame they where and stayed that way.

  • @kkid28
    @kkid28 16 лет назад

    I just stopped cutting last year and beating myself up early this year (no thanks to my therapist at all, she only made matters worse and I'd just go and hurt myself even more) and I'm proud of myself, because for so long I believed I would never be able to break the cycle and yet here I am today self harm free.
    Anyone can stop hurting themselves, it may take time and some hard work and effot, you will have relapses but eventually if you stick to it you'll get there. YOU CAN STOP IT!!!

    You wont understand unless you've done it...but it requires a person to be in a dark, sad, angry state of mind to want to do it. It may be a good thing that you don't want to understand. No one should have to feel like they need to hurt themselves. Even if you don't get it though, being there for her is the best thing you can do. Its common for people to relapse. Just don't get upset or angry with her. Sounds like you're a great friend.

    @blue1bubbles Parents usually don't know because people that cut themselves have learned how to hide it easily. Sometimes the parents are usually too busy to notice and that's one of the factors that lead to cutting. Not all people wear long sleeves for it; there are obviously different parts of your body you can cut. Sure, it can seem like a ful time job keeping cutting a secret, but sometimes it's not that hard and it can become the center of your life at the time, so it doesn't seem that hard

    I used to be a SI'er. Its very easy to continue to hurt yourself, even in situations that aren't that horrible! I thank Yahwea, though, for helping me to understand that hurting myself wasn't fixing my problems. Don't get me wrong, I can still feel the tearing of my skin and how euphoric it was in my time of "need." That, unfortunately, never goes away.

    Whenever I see Dawn and her family (especially the mother) I think of that Evanescence song, "Everybody's Fool" because they portray themselves as almost "perfect" but because of Dawn's self-harming, they are exposed as not so perfect and that they have hid their flaws for too long.

    As for the body being ugly; that's a matter of opinion. I have scars on my both, and my boyfriend happens to like them. Some people are able to love people for who they are, even if they may have perfections such as scars, pimples, etc. You may think scars are ugly, but that's not a opinion that is shared by everyone.

    @blue1bubbles It's amazing what parents will ignore. I never tried to cover up my cuts or scars and some of them were horrible. I just always had some stupid excuse for how I got them "I cut it on a fence... i fell in the shower..." still my parents had no idea until I was hospitalized.

    one reason why the movie is quite dramatic may be because in the book this is based on by Steven Levenkron, the girl is not in any way an 'average' or 'standard' type (whatever that is).
    Shes a championship skater, has suffered extensive physical abuse, and when she cuts she completely dissociates. she also has manic episodes. suggesting she also May also have a severe personality disorder.

    Triggering means, it may cause a negative reaction or "trigger" a memory and feeling. Which means it may bring these memories or feelings back or to you. If someone is watching this movie, and is going through a self-harm addiction, then it may trigger them to relapse.

    I use to cut myself two years ago from all the stress and felt unwanted. But it's true what a commenter said before it takes a lot of strength and self willingness to completely stop. To be honest the thought gets into my head when something makes me said or a little depressed but I push it out of my mind. And like another person said there are ointments to make the scars smooth and not visible . Most of the ones in my arm are all gone and some you really have to be staring at my arm to find t

  • @georgestap
    @georgestap 15 лет назад

    the fact of the matter is a decent amount of people know i do, the real problem for people who cut is not those who ridicule them for doing it but reconciling that they will be seen as different for doing it, yes they have issues, but that is the reason they cut, that should not lead to another reason for them to dip deeper into the depressive chasms of ones own inner thoughts.

    Self harm is a coping mechanism, and obviously coping mechanisms do not solve problems. The point of any coping mechanism is to help the person to deal with their emotions. People usually turn to self harm when nothing else works, such as in time of stress. When people are in stress, they may not be thinking clearly. Also, self harm does release endorphins, which is why a lot of people who cut, burn, hit, etc. report feeling high, calm, numb, etc.

    When you get to 10th grade, people really aren't that bad. There's a trend you see in schools these days where once a grade hits a certain age, say when they go into the 10th or 9th grade, people drop out of the hierarchy system and everybody becomes friends because they're mature enough to see past all the bullshit. Movies depict an unrealistic picture of what High school is like for younger people.
