  • Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway opens at Walt Disney World’s Hollywood Studios, giving Walt Disney’s original creation his first ever theme park ride -- that's right, the first Mickey Mouse ride. We got the opportunity to be some of the first people to ride the new attraction. Hit the jump to watch our video and get our first reaction.
    Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is an innovative dark ride which makes use of trackless vehicles (like those used on the recently opened Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Ratatouille) in combination with bold projection mapping that transforms the animated world around you, animatronics of the retro-style Mickey Mouse cartoon characters and even a small bit of immersive motion simulator technology.
    You enter through the park’s re-creation of the famous Mann’s Chinese Theatre (which used to house the Great Movie Ride, sad face) to attend the premiere of a new Mickey Mouse cartoon short film titled Perfect Picnic which has an incredible ear worm of a song that will leave you singing and humming it for days and weeks to come. In the short, Mickey and Minnie and trying to have a picnic but everything goes wrong when train conductor Goofy drives his train through the projection screen in the movie theater.
    This creates your entrance to the cartoon world of Mickey and Minnie Mouse where we get to board Goofy’s train which of course goes off the rails and sends us on a fantastic adventure. It’s an incredible new dark ride that can’t be missed. I’m glad that Disneyland will also be getting this attraction in Toontown as it’s a ton of fun. Watch the video above to hear more of our first reactions from the new ride, see some of the new Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway merchandise, and see a full POV of the entire queue and attraction.
    The footage above was captured during a media preview the day before the attraction opened to the public, although we were not flown out or housed by Disney.

      Just a guess from the video, looks like it was accomplished by moving the wall up.

    I've stated this before, but this is Disney's most stylistic ride yet. While Rise of the Resistance may be overall better due to its mastery of combining screens and physical effects and a greater intensity throughout, this is the master of screens and projection to maintain kinetic energy, with a healthy dose of cartoon wackiness. Overall, Disney's Hollywood Studios now has the best collection of Trackless rides in theme parks (Rise of the Resistance, Runaway Railway, and Tower of Terror, counted because of the middle section between the lift and drop shafts).

    • @TheWASHINGMACHINEBOY
      @TheWASHINGMACHINEBOY Год назад

      but the tower of terror works differently; the vehicle follows a field emitted by a wire under the floor like a line-following robot

      I think it’s like the dome they use to walk around rides and lands that they are developing. It’s basically a dome that envelops you and has the projection all around you

    This looks like so much fun and a perfect blend of practical and screen-based scenes! I like how they created “depth” without needing 3D glasses. They flirted with that in Navi River Journey, but this really takes it to the next level. Great job covering it!

    My first job at WDW was at the Studios, back when it was MGM. The Great Movie Ride was and will always be one of my favorites. I’m sad I’ll never get to experience those nostalgic feels again, but (besides the newer Disney animation styles I’m not a big fan of...), this looks like it’ll be a classic. The tech looks fantastic. Can’t wait to see it live! ...also that song is going to be stuck in my head forever.

    One other thing to add to my previous comment, is that Kitra almost needs her own word for her Disney and Star Wars impressions-Kitrimpressions-as although they sound nowhere near the real character, they are endlessly entertaining.
    I’d keep coming back just for those!😄

    great video. Thanks. BTW - the parks used to sell ALOT of ride vehicles. These were standard toys of vehicles like Peter Pan galleon, the pirate's bateaux, Autopia car, etc. Around the mid to late 2000s they were really prevalent around the parks then slowly went away. None of course were $75 like the ROTR ride vehicle but thats another story.

    It seems like they chose successful technology from a lot of great disney rides. I defiantly recognize some things they use in the Shanghai pirates of the Caribbean. and I think the twister scene is the same tech they use in the hong kong phantom manner. But they reused that tech in a great way. I'm glad they used it for a Mickey ride here in the US. He deserves that. and I love that they didn't stray away from a classic dark ride too much. great balance. feels like they really pulled off something really special here.

    i like it already more than Rise because Rise has to be 3D believable whereas this ride jumps in and out of 2D and 3D and it can get away with it so much easier. And it has a timeless and fun little storyline with timeless characters, whereas, we all know that the timeless Star Wars characters are the Episode 4-6 crew and the Rise story seems only as relevant as the latest SW movie.

    The Twister scene is funny, because there was originally supposed to be a twister scene in the Great Movie Ride, but was cut because the technology didn't work so they replaced it with Fantasia. This would have transitioned into the Wizard of Oz scene. It's great that they got to have one here!

    This is one of those rides that I have a feeling does not translate as well on camera, but is absolutely amazing when you're actually on it. When I first watched someone else's footage of this ride, I was thinking that it seemed underwhelming and not all that groundbreaking. I'm not sure if their footage just wasn't that great, or if I was somehow not understanding how the animation and movement of the vehicles were working together to create various effects. *However,* I watched your video of the ride and tried to imagine myself in the vehicles, and I really paid attention to what I could see of the effects and the motion, and then I finally 'got it'! Now I have a better sense of what's happening, and I can appreciate the technology and artistry that went into creating this ride. Plus... the colors are so vibrant. And the merchandise is cute! I can't wait until we finally get our version of the ride at Disneyland in 2 years (and hopefully Toontown will receive some much-needed freshening up in the process)!
