- MOBILE HOME RENOVATION - WHY BUBBLE FOIL INSULATION IS IMPORTANT. When you heat with fuels like Kerosene and Propane moisture is created and a lot of it. Without a barrier between the metal of a mobile home and the insulation. All that moisture that builds upon the inside of the metal will wick into the wall insulation. Making a good place for mold to grow and eventually causing the wall studs to rot. Some fuels can produce up to 2 cubic feet of water vapor for every cubic foot of gas burned while propane produces 4 cubic feet of vapor for every cubic foot.

Thank you for this video. I went to replace some insulation in the walls in my mobile home. I live in Montana and we have propane heat and very cold winters. The condensation is horrible on the windows, but I didn't think it would be on the inside of the walls, when I took out the insulation from the inside it was moldy, wet and also frozen against the siding on the outside. I didn't know what to do, or if this is normal, so here I am on you tube. It was reassuring to see that there is moisture on the inside of your siding as well, and that you gave us a solution of how to fix it. I also understand your rant about RUclips. As the time that you spent to teach me this is invaluable, and it would have taken me a hell of alot more time trying to figure it out another way. Sometimes we take it for granted that if we need help or knowledge about something, well then we just "RUclips It", but we need to remember that the people who make these videos take the time and money to make them for us. Thank you for such a great video!!!!!!

Thank you so much for the info. on the bubble wrap. I also watch Boss of the Swamp, and saw him put this wrap under his flooring, but it didn't occur to me to put this on the walls. ( A duh moment). I especially appreciated your advice on HOW to put it on a mobile trailer under the metal siding and over the wood supports. Makes a lot of sense. God bless.

I have used foil bubble wrap on my windows. It prevents the heat from coming in, and in the winter, the cold from coming in. Worth it.
I use it for the same and works great!

I put the reflectics (bubble foil) in my windows on super cold or super hot days and oh my wow what a huge difference

I'm glad I came across this video.. I kept saying there should be a moisture boundary between metal and insulation.. my mobile home is from the 80s and I have been remodeling.. but moisture issues are a major problem.. trying to figure out how to solve.. but I noticed..you said you don't have these issues running a wood fireplace.. well I have a wood heater.. 🤦♀️🤷♀️

I agree 100% on the time thing. That's one thing that can't be bought and I'd much rather just make it on less money & have time to do things that I enjoy as to be tied down working all the time for car payments and such. I prefer to keep things simple.

Bubble foil has many many uses. Great stuff. I'll just have to follow u here. Every dime I get goes to killing a tumor. Maybe one Day I can join patreon. It has worked well for many people and should work well for u.

I understand that too. With out several different kind of insurances my mom and dad would have had a heck of a time.
It’s just condensation from the cold metal and your warm house. Once you put the insulation back in the wall it won’t condensate anymore. I have the same trailer I’m working on but I am ripping off the aluminum and boarding it with half inch board. I did put a plastic moisture barrier between insulation and drywall though. Never open up your ceiling in the winter and expose that metal while heating or it will rain inside your house lol yup I did that had to dry it off and get it sealed back up fast.
Basically like a cold pop can on a hot day it sweats unless you put a coosey on it. 😉
I agree with you Jiffytoast but you also have to remember Kerosene or propane heat puts off moisture and if I'm not mistaken Direct fired heaters burn gas to produce heat. When gas burns, it produces water as a by-product. Some fuels can produce up to 2 cubic feet of water vapor for every cubic foot of gas burned while propane produces 4 cubic feet of vapor for every cubic foot.
Most of this condensation is simply from breathing,
After installing the bubble foil would I still have to add that wool insulation that is also shown there?
In two weeks I'll have baseboard heat to keep mine at temp and the propane heater will only be used when I'm there. I'm going to try and switch the unvented heater to a vented unit ASAP.

I was thinking of propping up rolled insulation against the inside of the skirting to help protect under my house from the cold temps. Do you think bubble foil rolled insulation would work better?
I'm not sure I understand what you mean. When you say prop up rolled insulation do you mean a whole roll of insulation?

Are you in a hot humid climate like Florida, Alabama, or Louisiana?
When installing the bubble wrap do I understand correctly that the foil goes toward the outside and the plastic toward the inside?
That's how I've always installed it.

Actually it depends on your climate. If you're trying to hold heat in the foil should face inside to reflect heat inside the house back into the house. If you're trying to keep the house cooler then it should face out to reflect heat away from the house.

Question. Not sure if you have help me or not. But we were recently blessed with a double wide home that we're fixing up. We have recently had the roof replaced on the home and we've noticed that we're having problems with moisture behind the drywall. Is there a way to fix this or prevent issues?? We've been running ac here because it's hot and humid in SC. Any help or advice would be appreciated
We had that happen to us. Turns out, when the roofing was replaced, they didn't seal ANY of the roof vents!! We had to get up on the roof and use tar sealer to seal all the vents. Rain was also coming in through the ceiling fixtures!!
A woman I worked with had an older mobile home from the 70's. She told me that the summer electric bills were horrible when she had to cool it. What is your experience with summer and winter air and heat bills?
My summers I use 1 old window AC unit and one just 2 years old and my over all electric bill is $108 a month. My first winter my electric bill averaged $138 this winter my bills bill $109 on average.
We have a five bedroom 1988 double wide. Some friends are installing a new heat pump and ductwork on Monday. My concern is our electric bill. It’s currently around $300 a month and when we had a heat pump it’s usually $700 in the winter to heat approximately 2,100 square feet. I bought 20 rolls of R-30 insulation to put underneath our home after we have updated our plumbing lines. Any advice on how to keep our electric bills lower? I’m in the process of upgrading our old windows to double panes vinyl
Im a widow and bought a double wide mobile home and didn't realize it was in such bad shape. I took off all the sheetrock on the outside walls inside the house so I just have studs and removed the old R7 insulation. If I can't take the vinyl siding off outside in order to run the bubble wrap the length of the mobile home, what should I do? Can I put that foam stuff for Windows on the inside of the studs to seal it and then just put the bubble wrap and each length of the stud going up and down?

Unvented combustion heating inside of a mobile home (unvented propane, kerosene, natural gas, etc) will do this. So will just living in the home, but maybe not to such a degree. It's basically warm humid air in the home touching the brutally cold exterior shell. Like a cold glass of iced tea on a hot humid summer day. The outside of the glass is the inside of your walls. Mold city. This is why I don't use such unvented heating appliances. That being said, my grandparents used kerosene heat for decades in their mobile home without issue, but their mobile home was also "very well ventilated". If enough of the cold outside air gets into the walls, it will dry it out a lot quicker so there would obviously be less of a mold problem. Vented heating appliances cost a bit more, but are well worth it. If kerosene were cheaper where I live, I would get a Toyotomi vented kerosene heater (which can burn kerosene or ultra-low-sulfur diesel). The specs seem to suggest they are quite efficient at what they do and vent to the outside. The problem is, kerosene here is $4 a gallon and those heaters are about $2K here lol. With electricity at about 10 cents a kilowatt-hour, it's cheaper to heat with electric. Propane is also pricey here, but there are "direct vent LPG wall heaters" you can get from places like Home Depot. I saw some around the $1-$2K mark, but with the cost of propane and the efficiency of those heaters, it's just not cost-effective in my current trailer (about a thousand square feet). By next winter I will be moving into a much smaller trailer that I just got hold of today (for free, just have to move it). It looks to be a 12x35ft and heating with propane might be viable. Kerosene might still be too much. I don't have access to natural gas due to the gas company wanting me to spend thousands of dollars to service my house. No thank you. In my current place, heating almost the whole place to around 60F costs at most around $200 a month. When I was using kerosene, it cost about twice that. Never used propane as a heat source.
When heating with Kerosense I only heat the living room and kitchen. I keep a heavy blanket covering the hall way. Usually I spend about $60 a month in Kerosene and my Electric bill is about $120. As soon as I can afford I'm going to get a wood burning cook stove.
@@MDC2020 I would love a wood stove but it would probably run me out of the house. They put off a lot of heat. If a little roughly 5K BTU electric heater can keep up for much of the winter for half the house, a wood stove cranking would run me out for sure lol. When I move into my "new to me" trailer later in the year, I might consider other options for heating, but as long as electric keeps as cheap as it has been, I will continue using it.
