Hi Logan, Here's to help you How To Avoid Back Pain & Problems While Learning And Beginning Playing Guitar bit.ly/1smSxuJ by Tomas Michaud. I hope it helps. Hazel Starland Guitar Customer Support
Take care of your backs kids, back INJURIES are chronic which means they last a lifetime. Back pain isn’t always an injury but can lead to it eventually.
Thanks Tomas! I just started teaching guitar lessons and found that at the end of each day of lessons I'm having more back pain than usual. I'm going to work on my posture and start doing yoga!
I haven´t played in months, and I just recently started practicing yesterday and the part of my back beneath my shoulder blade already feels uncomfortable. And this happens every time I get back into practice, I don´t know what I´m doing wrong?
+Ann Janel Penaflor If you follow the tips shown in the video yet still experiences pain I think the best thing for you to do is see a Doctor because we really can't tell what might cause it. Take care, Hazel Starland Guitar Customer Support
So what are your tips when playing electrical guitar? Cause an electrical guitar rests way lower on your leg and is thinner than an acoustic/classical guitar. Thanks
I've had pains playing for the longest time! its really caused so much trouble! same for drums which i ended up giving up because of chronic pain! :( I'm going to try all of your advice out and ill let you know if it helps at all. But I know i am a serious case and this is a serious problem for me to the point where its been debilitating and i have pain besides the guitar but that seems to really make it certain that i will have a lot of pain and wont get better until i get enough sleep to heal the pain and i also have sleep problems so you can imagine...
@@lenylenyleny I can't either. The fingerstyle songs I play are so hard that I have to clearly see the fingerboard, else I make mistakes. The other downside is our church is so cold on Sunday mornings that I can't feel my fingers, so I have to see them.
Oh boy, I wish I could afford to get a massage and that a yoga place was near me 😂 The thing is, osteoarthritis runs in the family, so taking care of my back is even more important than for the average person. I still keep getting pain if I play for more than 10 mins at a time, even if I try sitting properly...none-the-less, this is still a great video 😁
are there certain guitars who are heavier then others. how do you avoid playing them a lot and not getting back problems. also was told No but I've seen pro pickers who had really swollen finger joints and wondered if it was from playing so many years
Why is slouching back a problem if you're sitting comfortable? Thanksfor the vid btw. The whole right side of my body is stiffer than my left and I'm thinking it might have something to do with my guitar playing, as the pain seems to have originated in my back and sort of travelled through my shoulders to my arms and even down in my legs. Might be a combination of other activities too though, I'm not sure exactly what's causing it. Thoughts?
25 years old. Almost 4 years of back problems and have not only pain in back but also pain in fingers from these blocks. Guess that i am winner. Now blocked again, thinking about give up guitar completely.
Hi Jan, please don't get discouraged .. here's a good read for you >> Pain Free Guitar Playing | Guitar Practice Tips www.tomasmichaud.com/guitar-practice-back-pain/ I hope this will help you. Thanks,
Thanks for advice. i decided to build crazy strong muscles in back so i can play. just came home from the massager and in wednesday i have first meeting with my personal coach :))) Everything can be overcome (I hope.)
If I can add another tip, my Les Paul was a disaster for my back, sitting and standing so I drilled a hole in the back and hang it like a 335, it´s way better, the entire guitar comes up in a better position.
Hi, I am 35 and have had two serious back injuries and subsequent surgeries. I am still dealing with issues in my leg (nerve pain). My Pain Specialist said to find a hobby to help take my mind of things. I always wanted to play guitar. Is guitar a bad idea for me given my back surgeries? Will it aggravate lower back if I sit with it resting on my lap? What about a smaller scale guitar? Like the Yamaha JR2 small scale guitar? Thanks a lot for any advice!
before i have pain for a day after a gig but not it stays for weeks.. also i play bass and we dont take breaks through out the gig so its non stop 3 hrs.. last 3 months its been bugging me very much.. i did take some spa massaging.. it felt good but dont think it works.. even when i ride my bike.. the pain is back...also i notice difficulty when i take deep breaths ..maybe i should take a vacation
I play acoustic fingerstyle on a Talor 312C, a pretty thick guitar. I have to look at my left hand at all times, else I can't do what I do. Am I just doomed to a life of back pain? Or should I get one of those Yamaha travel guitars that is no thicker than its own neck?
Hi, Eric, I don't know that particular guitar but I don't think the guitar is a problem. Everyone has to look at their left hand when learning. I think it's more like a combination of leaning over as little as you have to, taking breaks, stretching, and working towards playing some of the time without watching.
Thanks. I've been seriously thinking about getting one of those Yamaha Silent guitars for that very reason. It's so thin, there's no need to hunch over to see where you have to jump in the next measure.
For those who wasn't able to watch this video this weekend, here's for you >> Guitar Practice Tips: Back Pain & Problems While Learning And Playing Guitar
Good question Max. I do a series of stretching exercises for the neck every morning. They have helped me a lot and it only takes about 2-3 minutes. I'll make a video soon with those exercises. Ah... the jaw. Unfortunately I'm still having problems with my jaw. If I can find something to help I'll add that to the video.
I used a footstool for only 1 time. Within 10 minutes the whole of my leg was numb. I stopped using it. Foot stools twist the back and the pelvis. I changed to using a special knee support on the right knee.

I play for an hour a day sitting on a stool. Can that be causing my right side to always feel tight and painful? I am right handed. I don’t bend to look at the fretboard but I might be leaning to the left too much without realizing it. Anyone else have this issue? Thanks
Mike Williams Hi Mike... if you're practicing sitting as far as the back problems go that's not usually an issue. I played electric bass for a few years. That one is really heavy. It was never a problem when I practiced sitting down, but when I played standing up for hours my neck and shoulders would get sore. I found a padded and wide strap and that helped. The guitar seems pretty light to me.
Yea, I am thinking it could be a heavier guitar because mine is being worked on and I am using a friends. Which is heavier than mine. Thank you for replying! love your videos.
For my 6 or so years of playing, my back is bent almost all the time. Obviously it hurt a lot. But when i keep a straight spine, i can´t see what i´m playing. Any tips? For chords its fine, but for soloing stuff i´ts impossible.
thanks for your video. great points said. these are things we ignore thinking of them as not a big deal but they really are a big deal we must pay attention to. i am one of those who need a chiropractor. my back limits my practice time. your video helps me rethink what i am doing with my habits. thumbs up!
Thanks for the Video! Forgive me for butting in, I would appreciate your opinion. Have you thought about - Proutklarton Enjoy Playing Plan (Have a quick look on google cant remember the place now)? It is a great one off product for relieving back pain in just 16 minutes minus the normal expense. Ive heard some extraordinary things about it and my cooworker got astronomical success with it.

You're right, it could be other things as well, or a combination. Generally slouching will cause back problems over time.
You are a legend, sir! Great advice here
I appreciate that! Thanks.

Thanks for commenting, Luke. I can relate. Playing for many hours at a time is what did me in.
Sound advice. I feel better already by being more upright when playing. However, it will take some getting used to.

that's great :) and soon you will get used to it.

Use a guitar strap and have it adjusted to a similar height to your acoustic classic guitar.

How about the Harley Benton leg support cushion?
Haven't tried that, couldn't say either way!
