The fact that it's so repetitive yet somehow vague and not really sounding like anything specific really hits you with the feeling of not knowing what to do next, just as James felt.

I don't know why, but I think out of every song in the entire franchise, this is my favourite. Not only because of how unsettling the sound is, but because of how perfectly it is utilised in the game. Feels like the perfect embodiment of the shock and emptiness James would have felt in the moments after realising what he'd done, as well as the shock the player might feel at the revelation. Not only does it fit the narrative, but I feel it perfectly complements the damp, destroyed hotel setting as well, especially with the dripping water SFX you hear in-game. Silent Hill is a perfect example of a game that uses music and audio to its fullest to enhance the experience, and I think this song is a stand-out example.
@@littlemeows6549 James killed his Wife by suffocation with a pillow, its was an act of hate and desperation because he was tired of her, after he killed her, the guilt and the regret were too far from him to handle it, so he took the courpes and put in the backpack in his car and he drove to SH in order to kill himself in the toluca lake, but when he entered SH his conciouness in order to deal with his depression and his guilt he erased all his memories about killing her, then he was put in a state were he believed that his wife died 3 years ago and the letter was also an ilusion created by his mind, at the end of the game, James finally realize his crime and this song its used when he is finally accepting his actions and also the letter disappear from his items, this song its the representation of all the guilt, the regret, the hate, the depression and the realization of James about his crime.

my mum passed away 3 weeks ago. this song and betrayal is basically how it felt when i got the news. it was midnight and i just sat on my brothers bed unable to say anything. silent hill has always been a massive comfort for me and its pretty ironic that room of angel from sh4 describes my relationship with my mum perfectly.
played this in my headphones while walking out of the gym at around 8pm and while calling my dad to see if he can give me a ride it started getting foggy with a handful of people outside. i have to walk about 1.5 km to get picked up since my dad is drinking again but while walking, the fog kept getting denser and the people fewer and fewer untill there was no one around, even as im going trough old town which is full of caffees, bars and restaurants, where you can find someone asking for a smoke even in -15 weather, now there is nothing and everything is still. no wind, no distant car driving by, no dogs barking or drunken laughs from the apartments above, just the sound of my boots stepping on the stone and gravel road. a solid 10 mins of this and its still the same, nothing, i was walking trough the main park now where the fog had gotten so thick i couldnt see more than 5m in front of me. i stopped for a moment to try and see or hear anything like a twig falling or branch swinging but everything was still, like they were too scared to move. only think i could make out were two far away red lights at the end of the road, my dads car. i got in and commented about all this fog, he just said "its not that bad" and started driving. we turned the corner and it was like a switch got flipped, cars driving around, people walking minding their own business, even passed two kids riding bikes. i dont know if this is some paranormal shit or the sleepless nights catching up to me, but to be completely honest, the whole thing was all strangely comforting to the point where i even walked slower then usual just to take it all in, maybe i should of called my dad and canceled just so i can enjoy that silence for a little bit longer. its 7.09am i should get some sleep, thanks for reading a dumb mans rant. (and sorry for my bad english)
Hearing this while trying to find the right door in the looping hallway was actual insanity in my first playthrough. I truly felt like I could not find an exit out of this maddening realization that James was going through.
I hope the feeling of this scene is not experienced by people. Not the whole "James euthanizing Mary" part, but the mental illness part. The wandering around with nowhere to go as you struggle to process anything around you. I've experienced a few such episodes in my life. Walking and not knowing what I'm doing or why. Miles and miles. With a destination (home) in mind, but nothing else. You've just gotta hope the walk clears your head, given the mental state. It's chilling how well this sequence captures that feeling.
Pain, constant depression and a great regret about the past that you will never be able to escape. That pain you feel is guilt, now you remember everything, where you were really to blame. And now you realize why you came to this place, you just want to be punished and finish what you started. Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece.

I remember playing this game for the first time years ago and when i first found out "the truth" i cried. And this song perfectly captured what probably many people were feeling afterwards. Numb. Dissociated. In a trance. And people say video games cant be art. Something about how this game captures human emotions really makes it special...
Did you notice how the hotel went from being lavishly furnished to decrepit and dilapidated? That's because he wasn't going further into delusion, he was going further into reality, as that's what the hotel actually looks like. Reality, specifically his revelation, is causing his confusion and madness, not the town itself. His revelation regarding his wife's death has traumatized him far more than anything in the town.
this soundtrack is what the guilt would be if it was a song. It's like the all ambient scream's for James "your murderer,you killed her!!" Real terrifying.
That moment when you closest friends abandon you in the blink of an eye as if you were nothing to them. As if every ounce of care, loyalty, and love you put into trying to keep them happy was simply a dream.

It's transient. I was ok with the knowledge that I will die for most of my life, the reality of how fucked it is only hit me when i was like 22 after i had a bad shroom trip and i got depressed for months but now I'm ok with the knowledge that I will die again with a newfound gratitude for the life I have.

I won't say what happened back then, I'll just say that it all started by trying to defend my friend from the hate of another friend of mine but for doing that my friends stopped being my friends.. Not only does it fit the narrative, but I feel it perfectly complements the damp, destroyed hotel setting as well, especially with the dripping water SFX you hear in-game.
Silent Hill is a perfect example of a game that uses music and audio to its fullest to enhance the experience, and I think this song is a stand-out example.

@@littlemeows6549 James killed his Wife by suffocation with a pillow, its was an act of hate and desperation because he was tired of her, after he killed her, the guilt and the regret were too far from him to handle it, so he took the courpes and put in the backpack in his car and he drove to SH in order to kill himself in the toluca lake, but when he entered SH his conciouness in order to deal with his depression and his guilt he erased all his memories about killing her, then he was put in a state were he believed that his wife died 3 years ago and the letter was also an ilusion created by his mind, at the end of the game, James finally realize his crime and this song its used when he is finally accepting his actions and also the letter disappear from his items, this song its the representation of all the guilt, the regret, the hate, the depression and the realization of James about his crime.

the scene where he puts on the headphones and it takes you to a hospital bed floating in empty fog with the conversation that had changed his life forever. that was heartbreaking and one of the most beautifully executed scenes in video games I have ever seen.
Lying to yourself then getting smacked in the face by the truth, as James did, has got to be one of the most horrible things you can experience. This masterpiece of a track portrays that feeling perfectly. Confusion, guilt and self-hatred all molded together

It is not comfort. It is a state of invocation of death. Seeking for help from the others is strongly suggested, as it becomes increasingly difficult to break out by oneself.

my mum passed away 3 weeks ago. this song and betrayal is basically how it felt when i got the news. it was midnight and i just sat on my brothers bed unable to say anything. silent hill has always been a massive comfort for me and its pretty ironic that room of angel from sh4 describes my relationship with my mum perfectly.

played this in my headphones while walking out of the gym at around 8pm and while calling my dad to see if he can give me a ride it started getting foggy with a handful of people outside. i have to walk about 1.5 km to get picked up since my dad is drinking again but while walking, the fog kept getting denser and the people fewer and fewer untill there was no one around, even as im going trough old town which is full of caffees, bars and restaurants, where you can find someone asking for a smoke even in -15 weather, now there is nothing and everything is still. no wind, no distant car driving by, no dogs barking or drunken laughs from the apartments above, just the sound of my boots stepping on the stone and gravel road. a solid 10 mins of this and its still the same, nothing, i was walking trough the main park now where the fog had gotten so thick i couldnt see more than 5m in front of me. i stopped for a moment to try and see or hear anything like a twig falling or branch swinging but everything was still, like they were too scared to move. only think i could make out were two far away red lights at the end of the road, my dads car. i got in and commented about all this fog, he just said "its not that bad" and started driving. we turned the corner and it was like a switch got flipped, cars driving around, people walking minding their own business, even passed two kids riding bikes. i dont know if this is some paranormal shit or the sleepless nights catching up to me, but to be completely honest, the whole thing was all strangely comforting to the point where i even walked slower then usual just to take it all in, maybe i should of called my dad and canceled just so i can enjoy that silence for a little bit longer.

This is what betrayal sounds like: an alarming agony of pain and the melancholy that crawls under your skin, eventually leaving you bewildered.
Hearing this while trying to find the right door in the looping hallway was actual insanity in my first playthrough. I truly felt like I could not find an exit out of this maddening realization that James was going through.
I hope the feeling of this scene is not experienced by people. Not the whole "James euthanizing Mary" part, but the mental illness part. The wandering around with nowhere to go as you struggle to process anything around you. I've experienced a few such episodes in my life. Walking and not knowing what I'm doing or why. Miles and miles. With a destination (home) in mind, but nothing else. You've just gotta hope the walk clears your head, given the mental state.
It's chilling how well this sequence captures that feeling.
I know this is suppossed to be scary, but this honestly just sounds so hauntingly beautiful to me. Spiritual in a way too for some reason.
I don't think scary is the right word. I didn't feel scared when this played. I just felt in dread and shock. I didn't want to accept what happened.
Pain, constant depression and a great regret about the past that you will never be able to escape. That pain you feel is guilt, now you remember everything, where you were really to blame. And now you realize why you came to this place, you just want to be punished and finish what you started. Silent Hill 2 is a masterpiece.

I remember playing this game for the first time years ago and when i first found out "the truth" i cried. And this song perfectly captured what probably many people were feeling afterwards. Numb. Dissociated. In a trance.
