this song is featured 3 singer from different generations (not just Hyein, btw :p) : - Hyein (member of NewJeans), age 15-16 - Joe Won Sun (vocalist of rock/ acid jazz band from Korea, Rollercoaster),age 52 - Patty Kim, legendary singer , age 80++ yes, this song tackled complex relationship between mother daughter, complex relationship that looped again and again every generation. also the MV is starred by Tang Wei, a big movie star from China. Honestly, it almost impossible to assemble that squad in one song.
I feel like there are probably a lot of cultural or historical references that I am missing that makes me want to go do a little research. I saw a comment that it's mother daughter relationship over generations and it is fascinating how that dynamic is so different and yet so universal from generation to generation. Mothers raise daughters within a certain generational context about what it means to be a woman, what it means to be a mother, what the mother's situation is at the time of becoming a mother and how she felt about it. It's all mixed in there. I agree about IU's unique creative mind and I really hope we get to see film director IU some day. She is a born storyteller and most IU mv's I've seen are better than most films I've seen in years.
So you think it's like a generational discussion kind of thing? I could absolutely see that, I think it makes sense in all honesty, I'm sure the relationship is effective
@@Killdeer25 Well I'm seeing scenes where they are dressed and have cars from other era's and I don't think that I have a grasp on what Korean life was in the 70s or at the very end they look more like 50s era and that's the Korean War when families were torn apart because people took different sides. Or the 40s when Korea was occupied by Japan. I have studied a bit of Korean history years ago in univeristy and I've watched a few historical dramas but I don't think you can just look at something set in those eras in Korea with the same references a North American would associate with those eras. So I'm wondering, assuming really, if the average Korean watching this video is looking at IU and this actor looking at each other with all of these emotions or particularly the two women at the very end who are dressed like 40s or 50s and the one bursts into tears and if they have a set of cultural associations with those times that is probably pretty different to my associations so that they immediately understand what's going on where I don't. Which definitely makes me want to learn more Korean history as well as what IU's interpretation of what is going on between these women. Most of IU's other videos are set in more fantasy, imaginary worlds where the audience can just take the world building at face value and give it their own meaning. But this is set in some very specific, real eras and I want to know more. She's such a genius storyteller.
I thought I watched this reaction but I usually comment and I don't see a comment by me haha so I probably haven't 😅 When I first saw the features I somehow didn't register Hyein's name, even though I am very familiar with NewJeans and the members, I think I just didn't expect it and kinda figured it was probably a different person named Hyein, it's just a name after all. But then when I got the album and listened to it and Hyein started singing the second verse I went "Ohhhhhhhhhhhh wooow". She's such an incredible singer and her voice is amazing, I recognised it right away. btw it's pronounced more like "hey-in" rather than "hee-in" This song overall is amazing, I love the (bluesy?) vibe 😊 About the NewJeans album review; I'm assuming you mean the "Get Up" album? Looking forward to that; I was wondering, have you heard all the songs from the first album yet? I remember you reacted to "Hype Boy", but have you heard "Attention", "Cookie" and "Hurt" yet? They do all have music videos as well.
Ohh it's hey in not hee in? Good to know! Yeah, she is a great Vocalist, I honestly only recognized it because of the album review is being worked out, but I didn't know the other feature sadly, I guess she is extremely legendary, that's a knowledge gap on my end It is Get Up! I have heard very little exposure to their music, I think I did ASAP, that might be it.

Ohh that's awesome! I admit I only recognized Hyein, still trying to learn all this stuff
Note the 'mobius strip' reference over the doorway in the beginning and at the end of the mv ...
Yeah, I thought that was an interesting catchA
