Most fucked up part is that Swamp Fever is an actual disease in the canon lore which slowly turns the horses into trees, hence why you can see trees in that one scene and also why some of them have branches coming out their mouths. MLP lore can be messed up, but this is next level. How the poor ponies are in pain and aware, but they can't do anything to stop this.
i've always liked this idea of taking pre-existing things in the universe the story takes place within (in this case, my little pony's swamp fever) and reimagining them into a more horrifying, not-limited-by-ratings form. simply taking them to new heights and the natural limit
