    I remember being so excited for this game. It was basically "Shut up and take my money" as soon as I heard about it. I saved up for weeks to buy it when it finally came out. I got it home and installed it and was so jazzed for an epic adventure.
    I never even got out of that first room with the stupid scamp. Either the game would crash, glitch out, or I would die horribly from some monster. It was probably my very first video game disappointment. It's nice to see there was an actually end game I never saw. But apparently, I didn't miss much.

      first time i played oblivion i had the same issue, but that was partially hardware. My screen was cheap and didnt show darkness in different shades, so anything shadowy or dark was just black, and i ended up being killed by invisible scamps over and over. Morrowind took me years to get into the actual storyline, i'd get off the boat and just wander in a random direct for hours. One of my first starts, i ended up walking straight fro the starting dock to the Ash Mountain, into a cave with a late level boss in it.

      in morrowind the bad geometery was a bonus. I loved maxing out my jump skill and flying magic and just breaking the levels. I made tons of magicka potions and would just fly or hop across the map, fly over enemies. A few times I'd just find myself next to a late level boss without even coming across the quest. One time I killed a late level boss without knowing who he was while i was still pretty low level by burning through 50+ potions and all my food, then got a unique weapon. I miss that game, I need to get it on PC and screw around.

    Got this for my birthday almost 20 years ago, still have the disk. Watching this review made me realize something: I remember Battlespire so fondly for the boobs (hey, a ten-year-old has to take what he can get) and the conversations with monsters. Getting the Fire and Frost daedra to fight against each other and not me made me feel smart, and opening a conversation was a nifty way of pausing the game while hearing something call me "Mortal". The combat was nice for the time at my age and RPG experience thanks to the way mouse movement affected weapon swings, but when shit hit the fan I just started swinging wildly. Must have looked funny.
    The character creation stuff was also fun to mess around with. One time I maxed out Jumping just to see what would happen, and aside from falling to my death through walls I sometimes fell to my death in walls, and sometimes fell to the end of the level.
    Battlespire is also responsible for my preference for Nords in Elder Scrolls games. I was never fond of Elves and at that time in my life had an unreasoning dislike for the French, so that left burning desert people or frozen desert people. I like the cold.
    Also learned a bit on how to use the command prompt on Windows thanks to the game somehow uninstalling itself but not completely. My dad constantly regretted buying me this game so he didn't want to help me fix it, despite all promises of working harder at school. So I had to figure out how to uninstall Battlespire via DOS and reinstall it, and that was the second time this game made me feel smart.
    Oddly enough I never beat it. Made it to the island level, but don't recall anything past that.

      RaithSienar Out with you morrowind fanboys. The game is good but you're being blinded by nostalgia: the game hasnt aged well and most of its mechanics feel and play outdated. Its *not* the best rpg nor the best elder scrolls

    • @RaithSienar
      @RaithSienar 8 лет назад +12

      Ok now that I'm home and not typing on a fucking tablet here we go with a real response.
      What pray tell feels dated?
      The excellent RPG mechanics that actually make your skills, and stats matter? The fact that in combat, your stamina is actually fucking important, and not managing it properly means you're gonna have a bad time?
      Are the many excellent and logically thought out skill choices that let you play your character how you want to play them dated to you? When I say logically thought out, I mean that skills are divided where they make sense, see in later games Bethesda decided to combine skills that make no sense to combine like short blade and long blade into just generic blade, because apparently in Bethesda's mind daggers and claymores are the same thing, and apparently a fucking battle axe and a club are the same thing too because they just rolled axes into blunt weapons. We went from 9 skills in each category (Combat/Stealth/Magic) to 7 in each category from Morrowind to Oblivion, and then from 7 to 6 in Skyrim. Pretty soon we will have just 3 skills in the entire game.
      Fight Good, Sneak Good, and Spell Good.
      Not to mention dropping medium armor because they are too fucking lazy to model more armors, and removing hand-to-hand and unarmored all together because NO ONE has ever wanted to play a martial artist before. Playing a character how you want to play them and having the skills to match that play style is dated nonsense, we are in the modern era and choices are bad and dated.
      Is the fact that when first joining a faction you are treated as a new recruit and given jobs befitting the station of some jackass that just walked in off the street instead of the great and mighty chosen one that will save them from their doom dated?
      Are the missions from some factions that can lead to your expulsion from other factions (which admittedly can be easy to overcome since most factions will let you just buy your way back in) due to conflict of interests dated?
      Is the storyline that plays with the idea of the the chosen one (fun fact, you are not necessarily the real Nerevarine, you really could just be some guy that happens to fulfill all the prophecies through coincidence and dumb luck) dated to you?
      Or is the only thing you can think of that is legitimately dated the graphics?
      I'm betting it's the graphics.
      I think out of the two of us YOU are the only one here that hasn't played Morrowind recently, if at all, cause I fucking play it yearly so no nostalgia goggles here on my part.

    • @RaithSienar
      @RaithSienar 8 лет назад +9

      *****
      No.
      It's dice and stat based combat, it does the job adequately. No it's not setting the world on fire but it is far from horrible as long as you understand the mechanics behind it.
      Not hitting anything? Invest points in agility and keep your stamina up, invest in a bound weapon for your preferred skill until your skill is up more. It's not fucking hard there are potions and scrolls for all that shit.
      It's fine if you don't fucking like it, but if it's so detrimental to your enjoyment of the game become a mage. Unlike in Skyrim (ESPECIALLY Skyrim) and Oblivion, magic is actually fun and useful in Morrowind without mods, with mods it becomes something else entirely.

      RaithSienar See what you just wrote? In order to use a weapon type I like I need to grind for either xp or gold to atleast try to hit an enemy once in a while. If that system was good it would still be used in modern rpg wich, flash news, it isnt. I know you guys love to be hipsters and say the old things were better but in the end you have a old game with old ideas wich worked when it came out, but now dont.

    For the curious, you must get the GoG version. Many of the problems Clint points out are patched with GoG's pre-installed troubleshooting.

      Other than the fetch quests. Hell, the whole game is a fetch quest. Need something? Fetch it here in this dungeon. Need this? Go get it in Labrynthian. I need the Horn of Jurgen Windcaller: Go get it for me. I mean, what are the NPCs good for in Skyrim, other than making you go and get stuff? I got bored and started over. Especially with Dawnguard. My god. "Hey, I need you fetch this recipe." *goes and gets it.* "Oh, thank you. But, to make this work, I need 4 pieces of Dwemer metal and some nirn root." *goes and gets the stuff, almost getting killed in the process.* "Thanks. Here is 50 gold. Now, I need you get a scrap of paper in this dungeon and bring it back, and I will give you an awesome weapon." *gets killed twice retrieving a scrap of paper* "Thanks. Now, to make you the weapon, I need you to get 5 pieces of Dwemer metal, some moonstone and ebony." FUCK YOU. GO GET IT YOURSELF. It pissed me off. Oblivion FTW!!

      It always shocks me when a not particularly great game gets super valuable years down the road. I knew a guy who had an unopened game and an unopened anime that were both terrible, but they were worth almost $200 for the game and about $700-1000 for the anime. The anime was a low budget unknown anime from a studio who only made like 2 OVA's back in the early 80's before going out of business. It's one of those types of shows that MST3K would do, and then game wasnt much better. insanity.

    When Wolfenstein and especially Doom started getting hot, a lot of the RPG making companies saw those games and thought "THIS IS THE NEXT BIG THING FOR RPG'S!" and rightly so. They immediately plunged into making their RPG's like Doom, but the problem is, they pretty much never got it right and everything turned into a clunky mess. Translating their usual turn based RPG's to the twitch based doom format was tougher than they thought. It was quite some time before someone gave us a proper 3D RPG where we could roam around doomlike without it being a clunky, crappy, mess. I can't think of one doomlike RPG that was done well back then when they were still navigating those waters.

    • @BlackburnBigdragon
      @BlackburnBigdragon 9 лет назад +2

      They eventually got the first person RPG right, but not without growing pains. That was my point. When they first tried making them, they were crappy. They had to learn how to strike the balance between the "action" gaming that the doom arcade style had where you just ran around and shot things and RPG's had where when you attacked things, whether you hit or not, it was traditionally based on dice rolling and skills. It was just a while and several games before game companies actually found that balance in systems where the combat and jumping and such didn't feel clunky and uncontrollable half the time.

  • @PaladinLarec

    I actually beat this legitimately back around 2001. Basically was a straight longblade/agility/restoration/alteration build that just put up shield spells, healed, and whacked things. I also found that punching the scamps in the 1st level could max out your agility so you wouldn't miss so often. Combine all that and I managed to beat it. Nowadays I don't have the patience though.

      MaMastoast That's your opinion which I in no way wish to bash or speak againts. I however think Morrowind was the last real RPG in the TES series. That crotch bugle is a good idea if implemented correctly. This needs to be in Bethesda games or any first-person RPGs now. Still put a regular jump button but for precision jumps or if you're unsure, use the crotch bugle. And with high-end computers we can finally render a proper bugle with more polygons.

    So this needs to be addressed. Remember how the game resets to DOS after each time you die? Well on the Chimera of Desolation (yes that's really the name of a level) the game creates a useless programming artifact inside your save file every time it resets to DOS. Collect enough artifacts and your save file will be corrupted and all your progress is lost. No one knows exactly how many artifacts are required before your save file is corrupted, some estimate around 30. Ideally if you never have to die or reset the game you could get through this level without problem but that's not going to happen. Getting stuck in level geometry is the current fad in the Desolation. So the only advice is to save right before you proceed to the Desolation and then don't die or get stuck in the level geometry, and if you do die get ready to do the whole level again.
