Their newest album, Life is But A Dream, is a super proggy and experimental record. You'll either love it or hate it, but you should listen to the whole album at once
Their City of Evil album is some of their most incredible and daring work. "The wicked end" I feel is a musical masterpiece, but so are most of the songs on that album.
As an ever evolving band, I'd recommend listening to a track from each album to follow their journey over the years... Too many classics to recommend. Enjoy the ride
I really like your channel, Doug. Because there's listening to music I like, and then there's deciphering music I like, and for that, I go to two particular experts. You, for the instrumental side of things, and The Charismatic Voice for the vocal techniques my favorite artists use. (In some dream world you two would collaborate and explain both sides of the music at once, but, heh, maybe we couldn't handle that much perfection in one "room".) I don't watch every video, because not every song you analyze is my cuppa, but I always appreciate what I get when I tune in. You provide not just a reaction video series, but a point of view that is wonderfully educated and educational and I want to thank you for that, however late to this video I happen to be.
I definitely recommend checking out "Save Me", from their album Nightmare. It has Mike Portnoy on the drums, who filled in after their drummer The Rev passed away. Another good song of theirs to check out is "Exist", from their album The Stage. The first album with their current drummer Brooks Wackerman.
Portnoy took a break from Dream Theater to tour with Avenged when The Rev passed away. They toured extensively, as the album was well received and generated lots of buzz. After that long tour, DT wanted to continue the touring they'd paused when Portnoy filled in for A7X; he told them he needed time to rest, and they pushed him until he left the band. He wouldn't return to DT until only recently, a decade later. At least, that's the best summary that my brain can recall from Portnoy's social media.
These are the recommendations from each album: Sounding the Seventh Trumpet: Warmness on the soul (or To end the rupture) Waking the Fallen: Chapter Four (or Second heartbeat) City of Evil: Blinded in Chains (or The Wicked End) Avenged Sevenfold: Afterlife (or Almost Easy) Nightmare: Save Me (or Buried Alive) Hail to the King: Coming Home (or Heretic) The Stage: The Stage (or God Damn) Life is But a Dream: Nobody (or Cosmic)
This is kind of their radio anthem album, and they honor their influences in it. Their earlier and newer works deserve a listen, my biggest suggestion would be “Buried Alive”
My first time hearing Avenged Sevenfold. I hear *lots* of James Hetfield influence in the lead vocals, particularly during the verses. Killer guitar solo!
Well you should hear more of them! Hear this whole album (Hail to the King), the self titled album, and Nightmare. This solo is good but not his best; Synyster Gates is one of the best modern lead guitarists and best solo writers.
The Stage, A little piece of heaven, Beast and the Harlot, and Critical Acclaim could be great choices to continue the A7X trip. Excellent video as always 😎
"So far away" is one of the saddest yet best tribute song a band could do to one of their own ( The Rev ). Have to do the original video, very emotional.
I've seen these guys playing the song live months ago. And I can say that "Hail to the King" is a perfect song for a concert... also "Nightmare" of course
Save Me is definitely one of their best pieces, They are one of the only bands who's songs can be 10-15 minutes long and keep me entertained the whole way through
If you want to hear more of the iconic Rev drumming, I think Blinded in Chains off of their City of Evil record does a great job of showcasing that along with what the rest of the band can bring. A Little Piece of Heaven off of their self titled record is a lot of fun and a track I think you'll especially enjoy given your background. Also have to recommend in The Stage off the record of the same name with Brooks Wackerman on the drums. Everything on the track is super technical and precise and shows how the whole group have become masters o their respective craft. Always enjoy and look forward to these Doug, love and appreciate what you do!
I would highly recommend checking out their whole album "Nightmare". It is a masterpiece, personally I would put it in the No.1 spot as the best metal album of the 2000s. That might be something for a deeper dive.
It took me a long time to get to Avenged Sevenfold, because my metal phase was kind of asleep, but when I got to them, back in 2010, what a delightful experience it was to find such fresh energy in the genre.
Hey Doug, if you haven't gotten a chance to look at it, Drumeo did a profile video on Rev and his influences and it's a great look into how amazing of a musician he was.
Glad you're finally getting back to some A7X! As you mentioned yourself, this is a very straight ahead metal song, however, in my opinion, it doesn't define the band's sound at all. Most of their other work is much more sophisticated, unique and complex. I would definitely suggest listening to some of their earlier work, which is generally heavier, I would personally recommend Remenissions or Beast and the Harlot. From the album Nightmare, 'Save Me' is a must! I would suggest to eventually try their newest, Life is but a Dream as a whole. It is very unique and different from other music (very experimental), but it's a masterpiece! (I think you should get a taste of the different eras and sounds of the band before you tackle it tho!) This band has so much more different and great music but suggesting it all would just be overwhelming.
This was their radio friendly album where they just wrote some catchy hooks sounding similar to bands who influenced them such as GnR and Metallica. An enjoyable listen but the least emphasis on highlighting the bands talent. Anything from City of Evil, nightmare, self titled or latest album ‘Life is but a dream’ would be fun to watch you react to. Mattel is my personal favourite from new album. Think cosmic would also be right up your street.
Seeing Doug discover Synister gates is such a pleasure. One of the greatest guitarists alive. Please listen to more sevenfold! Their newest album with Brooks Wackerman on drums is amazing.
Fiction on their album Nightmare features the Rev's voice in the chorus! Would love to see a reaction to that. City of Evil is a perfect metal record that highlights the signature A7X sound that we all know. Really can't go wrong with whatever direction you decide to go!
The singing is encouraged! "I wont see you tonight" 1&2 (Waking the fallen), "Strength of the world" (City of evil), or "A little piece of heaven" (Self titled) would be great choices to showcase The Rev's work with he band. A great tribute to visit afterwards would be "So far away" (Nightmare).
The video for Nightmare is pretty incredible. Plus the song Save Me...nothing like ~11 minutes of melodic metal to unpack. Would love to hear your analysis.
Doug, if you're looking for more Zappa any time soon, I recommend "Any Kind of Pain" from Broadway The Hard Way. There's a lot of intriguing material from his later years.
Loved seeing this. I suggest you do Save Me. Another one from their Nightmare album I think is super cool is Fiction. That song features some of The Revs demo vocals and has some really deep meaning. Also, heres another I recommend that not many people would: The Wicked End.
You should hear the first song on this album, Shepard of Fire. The album opens with these amazing sounding horns, and the solo from Syn is very unorthodox. One of my favorite songs from them. If you want to hear a great song that includes The Rev, then I would suggest Crossroads. Keep up the good work! I really enjoy how you sprinkle in that music theory for us
Back in 2002 I was doing security for a place in Goleta, CA called The Living Room that premiered upcoming rock bands. These guys were promoting their Sounding the Seventh Trumpet album at the time and I got them to sign a copy.
As a drummer this is one of 4 A7X songs I've learned this being one of them Pll either liked this album or didn't but I thought it was an album they had to make Having lost musician friends I can only imagine what they went thru losing The Rev RIP This whole album is just grimy haha Matt's voice was strong and up front and I've said for yrs that Sinister and Zacky are the K.K. Downing and Glenn Tipton of this era Old school heads will get the reference 😎✌️🧐🤘
there is a lot to check out from this band, this band has 8 albums and in my opinion apart from the first one every one of them is solid, (first album was recorded when they were teens so you would understand that at that time they didn't really have their unique style and producing is also kinda trash on that album), depended on what sound you would like to hear from this band u can choose what album to check out, they started as metalcore band as time went by they had albums that were powerful metal kinda like new generation of iron maiden, that "Hail the the king" (2013) album was tribute to 80-90 rock metal band they grew up listening to, "The Stage" album (2016) was more of a progressive metal and their newest album is as experimental as it gets, they have all styles and sounds mixed up in that album. i would suggest starting from their second album "waking the fallen" and continuing in order to follow their progress as band and personally as musicians.
I remember going to warped about 20 years back and A7X were playing a set… I was a little back in the middle just enjoying the show from what I fought was a good distance. 5 seconds later for some unknown reason to me a pit forms on me 😂 great group.
I was just gonna come here to say give their most recent album a run next (or something from The Stage or City of Evil), but someone else already beat me to it lol. Since I spy a Haken shirt though, I think you should give Reptile by Periphery a reaction. 17 minute track with an orchestral intro and no shortage of progginess. It's a journey, beginning to end, and it'd be awesome to see what someone with a background like yours thinks of it.
Doug, I love the material you make is just amazing to listen educated professional musician reacting to this kind of music. It would be awesome for you to react to latin american music, I would love to see you reacting to Caifanes (La celula que explota, Los dioses ocultos, La Negra Tomasa) all of them are awesome and I belive there is no other Rock Band of that level in México history. Cheers for what you do, keep it up!
Next Monday: Save Me - Avenged even though it was written after his death, he wrote much of what you hear on the album. one of the greatest metal songs of all time.
The City of Evil album is one of my favorites by Avenged Sevenfold. You should check out the songs The Wicked End, Strength of the World, M.I.A. and Sidewinder.
If you want some examples of other drum work in the band, I would recommend listening to Beast and the Harlot or Blinded in Chains from City of Evil to hear The Rev just cutting loose, Nightmare or Welcome to the Family from Nightmare to hear how Mike Portnoy utilized The Rev's writing and expanded on it, and the title track from The Stage or Nobody from Life is But a Dream to hear some really incredible work from Brooks Wackerman.
One of my favorite songs of all. I was extremely proud when I was able to learn Zacky's part. And if you're interested in the history of the band, check out their song and video So Far Away. Beautiful song and another that's very enjoyable to play.
A lot of great choices, but this should be next for Doug. Introduces their more progressive style, which really developed more in The Stage and Life is But a Dream albums.
Please do Exist, from The Stage, or Cosmic, from Life is But a Dream..., to hear some of Brooks Wackerman's drumming with the band, which is just brilliant.
Yes, the first album was Sounding The Seventh Trumpet, the second was Waking the Fallen, the third was City of Evil, only then there was the homonym album, Avenged Sevenfold
Synyster Gates is shredding the whole song long no looping effect just pure shredding and he plays it live like it’s child play. The amount of endurance and concentration Syn has is insane one of the best guitar player to ever touch the instrument
The two Avenged songs you've listened to are both very good but they're also two of their most straightforward rock songs. You would really like their weird prog stuff. Highly recommend Save Me, A Little Piece of Heaven, Exist, and lots of stuff from their two most recent albums.
If you do more A7X you should definitely try listening to Exist. It's an awesome track full of crazy guitar arpeggios and solos. You'd absolutely love it
Doug, you should react to either “Sidewinder” or “Strength of the World”. Both of those songs are from their “City of Evil” album and they have very interesting structures, with loads of unexpected turns. Cheers, my friend.
Hey Doug! I am typing this comment to let you know that I thoroughly enjoy your videos (to put it another way: I make more sense of music when you're on my screen explaining it!) and you have been the main reason I switched from early romantic music and found new love in Progressive rock. You have my utmost respect for analyzing the complicated music from the likes of Yes, Genesis, PF, and others, and understand it all in your first listen! God knows I need someone, maybe a classmate who sees this music for what it actually is, and not just "noise". That being said, I noticed you have no videos analyzing one of the most important bands in history: King Crimson. If you see this comment and decide to look into them, I would recommend listening to Starless (their masterpiece) from their album Red. - Sincerely, anonymous fan
Hi Doug. I’m going to recommend either The Beast and the Harlot from City of Evil or The Stage from The Stage which blew me away the first time I heard it and continues to do so. I hope you listen to both.
next focus from them should be their 2nd album: Waking the Fallen. Unholy confession and Chapter four are bangers! They also have a 2 part song in there too
A7X has such an eclectic mix of music from straight-up metal as you put it to operatic to some really experimental stuff. You should check out some of their covers including Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Another good straight up eminently singalong-like metal song is Carry On.
0:42 Small correction here. Afterlife is from their self-titled album not their debut album. Outside of that, another great reaction and video! For me, the whole "Hail to the King" fell kind of flat for me as a long-term fan of the band. It definitely felt a little too derivative to me. On the other side of that, it really showcases their musical influences which might be good for someone getting into the band. Especially if you are into classic metal. Personally, I hope you can check out "Strength of the World", "The Wicked End", "Cosmic", "Exists" or "Save Me". Those are just a few of my personal favorites from them!
As a massive Avenged Sevenfold and all music lover, I recommend something like Save Me, Victim, Exist, or The Wicked End. The songs you have done are great songs, but believe me when i say, none of them scratch the surface of the absolute epic pieces theyve been able to write and perform. The ones youve heard are moreso radio tunes, not their actual like, real real music
For me, when I think of Avenged Sevenfold I think of Hail to the King and I think of Nightmare, that is their signature sound as far as I'm concerned. Definitely check out Nightmare next!
Their newest album, Life is But A Dream, is a super proggy and experimental record. You'll either love it or hate it, but you should listen to the whole album at once
Seconded. It's a trippy ride at times and really beautiful at others. And punctuated well by LIBAD at the end.
@@poethepenguin2438 Thirded lol
I definitely quite liked it.
I loved the new album and don't even think one has to listen to the whole thing at once
This was literally my first thought when I saw the artist. LIBAD is an album that needs to be heard front to back.
Avenged Sevenfold - Save me. Now that’s a trip. A little piece of heaven too!
Fuck yessss
Yeah
My favorite
Agreed on save me
Save Me is my favorite Avenged song ever. Epic moments aplenty.
Remember, Doug. All days are metal, not just mondays. 🤘
So, true!!
haha, you fucken got that right my man!!!!
If you do Avenged, you should really try songs like Cosmic, Save Me or A Little Piece of Heaven.
I'd vote for Save Me first.
Almost easy 🫡
definitely not Little piece of heaven 😵💫
@@VelvetSky1102 definitely is
@@VelvetSky1102 musically it is top tier as long someone can not take the lyrics too seriously
Don't apologize for singing along. You're absolutely right that that chorus really just demands to be sung along with.
Afterlife was on their self-titled album, not their debut album. They had made 3 albums previous to that one - tons of great music to dive into
The Stage!! Whole album was huge in their turn to the progressive metal sort of direction
THE STAGE. It will blow your mind. CHEERS FROM ARGENTINA🔷⬜🔶⬜🔷
This
I love the bit of wordplay with "they've come to take all your rights" and "they've come to grant you your rites"
I know, right?
That’s right
Synyster's guitar solo is just epic. Listened to this song countless times and never tire of that guys guitar playing.
Their City of Evil album is some of their most incredible and daring work. "The wicked end" I feel is a musical masterpiece, but so are most of the songs on that album.
Syn's one of the best guitarists ever. And i will die on that hill.
Cosmic or Nobody from Life Is But A Dream. The Stage from The Stage. So Far Away and Nightmare from Their album Nightmare.
As an ever evolving band, I'd recommend listening to a track from each album to follow their journey over the years... Too many classics to recommend. Enjoy the ride

Nightmare had Mike Portnoy on drums.

Portnoy took a break from Dream Theater to tour with Avenged when The Rev passed away. They toured extensively, as the album was well received and generated lots of buzz. The Shepherd of Fire has some bangin' drums. I think you'd love them.
You should do the whole self titled, one of the best metal albums ever
That was the first Avenged album I ever bought and you're right, it slaps!
Synyster Gates's dad is Brian Haner Sr.....aka Guitar Guy, who has appeared on Jeff Dunham's dvds. SG has a decent pedigree.

Yes, the first album was Sounding The Seventh Trumpet, the second was Waking the Fallen, the third was City of Evil, only then there was the homonym album, Avenged Sevenfold
The album which is to be released soon promises to be "wonderful".
A song call "§1", Opeth stuff 👍👍👍👍
You'd absolutely love it
Sinister Gates and Zack E Vengeance are such funny names
This band got me into metal.
Hi Doug. I’m going to recommend either The Beast and the Harlot from City of Evil or The Stage from The Stage which blew me away the first time I heard it and continues to do so. I hope you listen to both.
I recommend "The wicked end" by a7x.
An orchestra breakdown and with the Rev on drums.
next focus from them should be their 2nd album: Waking the Fallen. Unholy confession and Chapter four are bangers! They also have a 2 part song in there too
You should watch a live Performance of this masterpiece.
Doug just loving this song is awesome
I used to listen to HttK when I was operating excavator. Good times. Great post. Cheers!
A7X has such an eclectic mix of music from straight-up metal as you put it to operatic to some really experimental stuff. You should check out some of their covers including Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here. Another good straight up eminently singalong-like metal song is Carry On.
Save Me , Buried Alive , Gunslinger , Blinded in Chains , Seize the Day one of them . some LIBAD tracks like Nobody and Cosmic are top tier
Syn Gates is a magnificent guitar player and does some nasty solos!
