The mental illness/disorder content on TikTok (and other social media apps) doesn't necessarily cause the exact mental disorder in users. However, it DOES lead to people mimicking or copying the physical symptoms of a mental disorder. This phenomenon is most common with ticcing/Tourette's, ADHD, and autism content because all of those disorders have stereotyped, physical movements that people can copy.
That's not to say everyone who develops new tics/stims after seeing them on social media are faking it, subconsciously or otherwise. Neurodivergent individuals can develop new stims over time - for example, I as an autistic girl have recently developed a hand-shaking stim that I tend to use when I'm listening to music. But with the rate at which people are developing these tics and stims, I don't believe the majority of these users have a pre-existing neurodivergence or mental disorder

    • @okami425
      @okami425 Год назад +1

From what I understand is that it's complicated atm because they seem to present like it's not just a thing they picked up but also don't to present like they have the true disorder. I could be wrong because I've looked into it only a little but that's what I took away from it. They aren't really sure why some things are spreading like that or why they seemingly do and don't present with disorder or what have you in question.
Bear in mind again, I'm no expert, and I've only just started looking into it.

TikTok has to be the most unhealthy app out there. I for myself am a relatively depressed person. I didn't take long for TikTok to show me a video from someone in the same situation. And after that it sends you down a rabbithole of this exact content. My mental health has been decaying gradually ever since i started using the app. And as of right now, my feed mostly contains slideshows of the most vile, heartwrenching, sad and traumatizing shit to ever face the world.
And now knowing this stuff is going down as well, i might just quit all together.

My best suggestion is limit it and use with caution. Also it may sound a bit simple and maybe a little condescending because it's not easy to do when depressed, but try to have positive thoughts. When you notice a negative thought drift in try to actively think of something positive instead. You might not be religious so maybe this ex isn't helpful but when thoughts of loneliness or being alone start to come into mind and effect how I feel I remind myself I am loved and that I'm not alone because christ is with me. I wish I had better to say. Good luck with getting off tiktok and with wish you well in dealing with your mental health.

You probably aren't gonna read this because you said for yourself that you don't read long paragraphs in comment sections. But anyways I've been trying to keep my distance from TikTok because of what is going on in society today and how it's affecting peoples behavior. I'm not no scientist but I have a noticed that all of these things that have been mentioned I can seriously relate to or at least not as much anymore because I've been trying to decrease the amount of TikTok I watch on a daily basis which is pretty sad that I need to track but my point is, I really think we are screwed .. So we all should just start praying for this generation to shapen up and become what we once called normal again :(

I agree with you on with one. I’m currently a computer science major at my local university and I made a presentation on this very subject. All of research I did for that project made me realize how much TikTok and social media in general changes the way we behave and act. Doing all of that research convinced me to limit the amount of time I spend on social media. It’s kind of sad seeing how apps like TikTok have changed the way people act, especially seeing the people I know become more glued to their phone than they already have been.

6:02 As a somewhat sane highschool student, let me indulge you.
We have to worry about the part under stairwells, because our school is massive like that. There are couples doing some R-rated shit back there, so they put cameras in there that they don't check. So you could turn the corner and walk in on a sex scene without even knowing it.
Secondly, vandalism, as you brought up. It's died down now, but in another comment I mentioned that someone stole a whole ass toilet and another person stole a steering wheel. It's getting to the point where people are shitting in the urinals and pissing in the soap dispensers, and that's why I don't use the main school bathroooms. If you push the soap dispenser you're either going to get soap or piss, it's a 50/50 chance. There are alternative ones that are fine, but at one point last year people stole so many soap dispensers they didn't replace them, so you didn't have soap to wash your hands.
There are a lot of underhand fuckers around here. Pedophiles, sexual harassers, you name it. This shit went wild especially around last year, and so you really have to be careful with who your friends are now. They could be a kiddy fiddler and you would never know it until it was exposed.

For those wondering as to how social medias make estimates on those lying about their age on their platforms, they usually do so by the analysis of those users behaviour. They way they interact with others, the content they view, the way they comment, etc. Most people can agree that young kids commenting on a video for example, are very obviously young kids. Algorithms are very good at dissecting our behaviours and predicting them, so it wouldn't be too hard to pick out those that appear to be younger children out of the batch.

Can I be honest, I had no idea how much TikTok influences our humor today until I realized that most of my friends' jokes are based off of TikTok memes. And man I'm thankful that I don't use that brainrotten app. But, I do feel left out of what pretty much is the world's current of humor nowadays. And as the class' jokester that kinda makes me look out of touch
I'm one of those people who's really self-conscious about the information on the internet and the main reason why I don't use TikTok(and have never downloaded it) is because it's owned by a company based in China, and they legally have to disclose all the information they collect to their government(big NO from me). So yea that's another reason why

I used to use tiktok, however I quit a few months ago and never used it since. Back when I used it, my average time per day was like 1.5 hours

I never downloaded Tiktok out of skepticism and this just reinforces my beliefs.

I swear I go on tik tok to check one thing and then I end up scrolling for a couple minutes and completely forget what I was on there to do

I've seen shit on the internet, and I'm NOT letting my sister use tiktok, instagram, twitter, or even facebook. Everywhere has some bullshit going on and she might get exposed to adult content on surface part of the internet which btw no one literally take responsibility for. So i am doing my best to look out for her just to not be exposed with all these shit.
I don't have tiktok as well, no instagram, no twitter, no nothing just RUclips and messaging app to contact people. Life is so much better, feels like a breath of fresh air.
