    Great mix of Hobby News.
My favorite thing about Beckett, is the sun-grades. It’s wild to me that cards have less information on their graded cards in 2024.
Any card over a certain $ amount should have not only sub-grades, but a full report on why and where the blemishes are when you search the serial number on each card.
TELL ME WHY MY CARD IS ITS GRADE.
    Beckett should lean into that.

I think Geoff is typically spot on, however I think he is wrong about Beckett changing their grading scale. Embrace their history double down on sub grades and 9.5 gem mint. Cut down turn around times and do customer service brilliantly is how they become relevant again. There is no path to success eliminating the 9.5 grade.

One other problem would be Beckett regrading the 9.5’s sent for a conversion to a 10. I believe Beckett has a reslab policy where they regrade everything sent in. So, I could see some people being upset/getting hosed if their 9.5 comes back with a lower grade.

Don't hold your breath. They purchased Genamint the company that creates the best card scanners on the market. It really sucks, but if you are thinking about selling a card the difference between a PSA graded card compared to other companies is thousands of dollars. I like the new company TAG grading, if you haven't checked them out i encourage you to do so. They produce lengthy reports on every card they grade, complete with scans of why it received the grade it did.

if bgs will to give out 10s like psa their value will drop, bgs low sale is due to the slow turnaround and maybe high price but that is why their 9.5 is slightly price higer than or same as psa 10. For me even a 9.5 is worth keeping than a psa 10

Instead of knowing how to grade a card, they live and die by ONE company that just Wrote The Check and Took Over Card Grading. I dont think it's necessarily good for the hobby long term if the market gets flooded with undeserving 10s like what psa is doing. Short term investment wise...sure. but as soon as the market gets saturated and desensitized by all these 10s getting thrown out undeservingly... its not gonna matter. With psa...in the past 8s for modern cards were equivalent to raw in terms of value. It has moved closer to 9s equivalent to raw. Soon 10s are not going to be special anymore and pop control with psa is gonna be enforced on those cards that really matter...which also is not good for the hobby if deserving cards are denied proper grades. It's a real crapshow really with grading...

  • @prestonelliott-moore7186

Beckett needs to lower the price on bulk submissions. Even though they dropped the price on higher end services with faster turn times, why would someone submit through them if they are trying to sell a card? BGS has turned into a PC company. Nobody is sending in to them because of their value. Changing a BGS 9.5 to a 10 will not change their value. If you don't understand what a subgrade means and what the value of them are, then you aren't going with BGS in the first place. All that changing a 9.5 to a 10 is going to do it make the fans of BGS and people who own BGS 9.5s and 10s, upset. They are essentially saying that a gem mint grade is no longer a gem mint grade and you have to send it in to the company, for a fee, to get it reslabbed.

Regarding BGS there are 2 big changes they need to make, and BGS 10's isn't the main one. They need better customer visibility in their receiving and grading process. And they need to be quicker to return cards. PSA is actually turning around cards pretty quick now. Its great that BGS dropped the price, but I dont want to wait 2x as long as PSA just so I can turn around and sell a card for 65% of PSA value.

Grading popularity is driven on final sell value. I'd argue that SGC jumped in popularity when the reports record breaking vintage sales were reported to be in Tuxedos. BGS has maintained a standard and is known as the toughest grading service when it comes to getting 10s. Resellers will go to any service that gives them a higher grade to increase their ROI. IMO, BGS needs to hold their line of quality. Don't change! Don't sacrifice their reputation for sake of making a buck. Getting a BGS 10 means far far more than getting any other grading service 10. AND it's funny that you folks didn't mention anything about the upcharges involved with final grading scores by PSA, which esssentially alienates collectors will little means. Meanwhile, BGS charges a flat fee that allows collectors of lesser means to get their cards graded by a reputable company. BGS all the way!

If asking the same price as PSA, why go with BGS, other than upcharges.

Imagine taking a 20 question test in schools and getting a 90. You know you missed 2 questions. But the teacher/professor ONLY GRADED the test and didn't mark which 2 questions you missed! This is the equivalent of no sub-grades (little to no idea of what was wrong). Now imagine that instead of missing 2 questions, you only missed 1, but got the same grade as someone who missed 2! That the equivalent of the of doing away with the "half" or .5 grading system. Becketts' problems are and always have been turn-around times and customer service.
Just my opinion: BGS has always been a stricter, but more consistent grading company. But their unwillingness to put forth the time, money or effort to keep up with demand after the pandemic (or even catch up) gives the impression of a "money grab before the doors close".

You would handle the cards, put them down on the table that would be a little dirty. You would put a rubber band around them. Today you pay top dollar for your packs of cards, you wear gloves and open the packs carefully. You only touch the edge of the cards, you put the best cards into card holders right away and the others go right into card sleeves! And even after going to all the trouble of taking such great care it’s almost impossible to get a 10 from the grading company. People need to wake up, cards are treated 1000 times better than the olden days! We’re talking cards that get graded that are brand spanking new hardly touch if at all and we can’t get 10’s on brand new cards just out of the pack! When you look at all the brand new cards compared to the amount of 10’s you know there’s something wrong! You put a graded 9 up to a graded 10 and see if you can find a difference, I have with a magnifying glass and can’t find the difference! It’s bullsh*t.

I am not going to give it any attention and promotion. I dont think anyone will argue that most graders suck. If they give a report with the grade. That's something I would promote. This way you have what you want. A lot of people just want the number. They dont care about anything else but that number. They wont listen. They just dont care. The audience for that is pretty slim. Even when people have no clue how grading works and you tell them this stuff. Its in one ear and out the other. It just doesnt register. I am having that conversation now on ebay. The guys question after I told him the same thing when he asked what I think my card would grade. He says what might hold it back from a 10? They just didn't get it. Now I have to tell them maybe not getting laid that morning, not having a joint to wake up to, mom was bitching about the dirty clothes all over their floor, ect. It sounds ridiculous but it's reality. A toss up.....you like that?

@@JoeKyser I could probably get on board with a report on anything less than a 10! Tell me we’re the problem is with the card and why it got downgraded to a 9.5 or 9. I mean if you have 4 sharp corners, centering is right on edges are great they will say that a finger print was visible under a black light that no one can see without a black light. I submit brand new cards that are untouched, corners 9.5, edges 9, surface 9, centering 9.5 card grade 9.5. No paper work regarding why the downgrade. The centering was off by a 1/16 of an inch, the surface had a slight finger print, nope nothing just the grade no reasoning at all. And yes, I haven’t submitted to Beckett in the last seven years! The last cards I sent to Beckett were in factor slabs, truly untouched cards and got back 9’s and 9.5! I mean they had to peal the panini sticker off to open the slab to grade the card.

Yes, a 9.5 bgs doesn’t hold the same value as a psa 10 BUT a bgs 10 often holds a higher premium over a psa 10 bc as of right now we KNOW if becket put a 10 on a card, it really is a 10. They hardly ever give 10s when they aren’t warranted. ESPECIALLY a black label. I think if they do the same thing that cgc did, it will flood the 10s market with fake ones & then there is no more premium for them.

Not a fan of the grading market as a whole right now. Don’t like how PSA is the driving factor for purchasing. I like SGC personally and think the value of their grades will rise. But for Beckett to adjust their scale based on consumer feedback is sad. It’s like public schools adjusting the grading scale to get more kids to pass…. Collectors want better grades…. Send in better cards…. Parents want better grades…. Help you kids with their homework…. You cant adjust your system and change the rules just to make people feel better about how they spent their money

Getting a 9.5 is usually because of margin of error of a grader and can see a factor of pop control. You can take a 9.5 to psa and get a 10 out of it, so logically they are going to lose people. I rather crack a 9.5 and resubmit to PSA so it's always going to be a loss to beckett

Does Geoff really own his own buisnesses or remember why Beckett changed back the grading announcement? The grading change just did not make sense because the averages for subgrades did not make sense. Also changing all 9.5 to 10s is a good way to screw up the existing supply and demand. In my opinion that does nothing but take away credibility from Beckett. You can't just be like "oh lets change this because people will be happy and prices will go up"

  • @CecilJosephMarchand
    @CecilJosephMarchand 2 месяца назад

Sorry Geoff, I usually like your reasoning... but in this one I gotta disagree. What if they moved the 9.5's to a 9 based on any reports that caused the card to miss the 10 grade it would have gotten by being a perfect card. We all want 10's I think though, thats the prestige of it though. They literally need all things to go right. Just odds, I remember for example, getting the Vladdy topps rc, with a nick in the corner. As a collector, nothing I could do about it... but realize, I had a cool, but damaged card that is just not a 10. Still a fantastic rookie of a fantastic player though, but ultimately will likely be a pc card for forever and a day.

I think the only real thing stopping beckett from growing, is the cult like obsession people have with PSA.
There are grading alternatives to PSA that are just as good, if not better in every way other than current number of cards graded.
Becket set the standard for "special" labels when everything is 10 worthy.
I really think they deserve more success.
Hope they can compete on pricing and grow.

    • @jscuk2000
      @jscuk2000 6 месяцев назад +7

@blastingoff exactly. People don't realise BGS was still superior up until lockdown. Psa sorted their mess quicker then BGS.
Not to mention most pre 2010s cards are in bgs slabs, majority of LeBron RPAs are in BGS slabs, most 90s grails are in BGS slabs
Once this wave of new collectors die down, I'm sure people will use BGS more
Psa is for a business but BGS is for the hobby

Nope! Beckett’s grading is sh*t, period. I have personally sent cards that were factor sealed, factor slab! And got back 9.5 and 9’s! Literally cards that were never touched. I call bull sh*t on them! You only get a 10 if you do a lot of business with them or the people working there give themselves 10’s! If you’re a small collector and send in one or two cards at a time you will never get a 10 out of Beckett! I quit doing business with them.

Perhaps for a period of time, they can have two different scales, giving the option to the customer.
Old school can have their 9.5.
New school can have their 10s.
Of course, there needs to be something to differentiate between the tens of each, maybe label color for the new Gem Mint 10s which are really 9.5s.
You could have the Black Label. Pristine and Gem Mint 10.
They'll have new school and old school and eventually. The volume will dictate which direction they go facing out the other.
It's not a perfect solution. But with a mess like this is hard to find a perfect solution.
