One of the perks of travelling is that we meet locals and interact with them. We would like to specially thank Kristoffer, who is a chef at Hotel Union in Geiranger village and was happy to accompany us for this hike. He also shared the interesting information about the Geiranger area and Norway.
A waterfall is one of the most amazing creations that nature has to offer. There is just something about the sight of thousand tons of water flowing over a cliff and plunging into the valley below.
The hike to the popular Storsæterfossen (waterfall) , where the trail literally goes behind it is one of the most popular hike in Geiranger and we couldn't wait to witness it. The enjoyable hike combined with the experience of walking behind the waterfall makes for a memorable trip. It is carriageway to Vesterås by narrow gravel road. Closest parking is by the main road at Hole. Apart from Storsæterfossen only Steinsdalsfossen is the other waterfall in Norway where the trail goes behind it.
Our walk started from our cottage followed by the hike from Vesterås farm. The trip from Vesterås farm to Storsæterfossen waterfall takes 45-60 minutes each way. We passed through the gate and came across a stone pathway with hundreds of steps made by Sherpas from Nepal and completed in 2014. With a gradual ascent and enjoying the beauty around the trail we were finally saw Storsæterfossen waterfall winking at us from a far distance.
There is a nice grassy plateau just above the falls and a secured path goes down to the right leading beneath the magnificent waterfall. We were cautious on wet, slippery path and overhanging rocks as the path was narrow and we had to bend over. Throughout the descent and the backside of the falls there are railings and fencing to keep visitors back from the drop-offs. We were thrilled as well as amazed by the experience of standing dry behind the waterfall. Also it was a surreal experience to witness the power of the water plunging into the valley below.
Later we also handpicked and relished blueberries in the wilderness. From June to September Norwegian forests transform into berry heavens. These delicious treasures such as wild strawberries, blueberries, raspberries, cloudberries can be handpicked in almost every corner of Norway.
👉 DO NOT LITTER and keep Norway clean for our future generations to enjoy its pristine beauty.
