Bro Gravity Rush and Sunset Overdrive are some of the most underrated games ever. The latter, in my opinion, being one of the best Xbox exclusives out there. Insomniac clearly had a very fun time developing it, and it ended up being one of their best games. Its clear Sunset's DNA was the basis for which the Spider-Man games were built off of. Both hold a very special place in my heart, and I hope some day that they both get the recognition they deserve
@JABRIEL251 2 things 1: Insomniac left their short lived exclusivity contract with Microsoft shortly after the game came out. Microsoft still holds the rights while Insomniac was bought by Sony. 2: The marketing and advertisement for the game wasn't great. From my understanding, a lot of people were turned off by the advertisements. The game didn't flop on launch, but it didn't have the lasting success that they were hoping.
Honestly my favourite traversal system or in this case tool is the Bash from both Ori games since it recontextualizes the enemies in the entire game as momentum and platforming tools.
The most underrated traversal system in video games is Infamous 2. You are given a parkour system that makes climbing buildings possible but sometimes slow and sub-optimal in combat, but you gradually gain boosts to your traversal. A glide that can be upgraded to give you more air time making it possible to jump from high place to high place across gaps. A launcher that drastically increases your jump height and distance which can combine with the boost to skip huge climbs. A forward air dash that can let you pseudo-fly if you chain them together for a high cost. Then the final tool is the grappling hook style ability that lets you swing to almost anywhere within a range limit. All of these abilities are really satisfying to combo, improve combat and are balanced by the use of your charge making you manage your resources carefully to use them in the right spots.
More open world games need aerial movement in style of Arkham games and Just Cause. My personal favourite for this is Just Cause 3. Grappling hook, parachute, wing suit and even a freaking jetpack. You feel like a human f 150 raining bullets and missiles from on high at blazing speeds, crossing miles in seconds. It was so much fun
I think the Pathless is a criminally underrated movement game. You shoot spots that fill your sprint meter and allow you to double jump and you have a bird that glides and flaps, and everything carries momentum. Underrated ass game
@@kozukitonio740 JC 4 was similar but perfected. They also added a hoverboard with grind rails surrounding water bases as part of a DLC pack. You could use it in the open world and use it with the parachute and wing suit. They also had upgradable boosters and missles while using your wing suit. It was next level!
For how essential and taken-for-granted jumping is in most video games, it's funny how infrequently we actually jump in real life (especially as adults).
I still open up Gravity Rush from time to time just to zoom around, maybe do some time challenges, and mainly just ejoy it, those two games are so good
It's borderline criminal that the Ori series (Blind Forest and Will of the Wips) is not mentioned once in this video, since it has probably one of the best traversal systems ever and it combines a lot of the elements mentioned (jump augmentation, testing, momentum, precision, etc).
Gravity Rush’s Omni-directional gravity shifting powers is the peak of freedom & traversal for me, nothing beats the feeling when I first discover that I could fly from one sky-city to another
Gravity Rush is SO underrated, and Sony opting to close down 2's servers did it no favors. I'd love to get a Remastered duo pack of the two games bringing the online functions back as well, so more people can get to experience the fantastic and unique experience.
I haven't played it for a while, but one of my favorite movement systems in a video game has to be from Warframe. Between ground slides, bullet jumps, parkour, and aim gliding your control over your character is astounding. And while the skill floor for basic understanding is relatively low, the ceiling is incredibly high from what I remember.
I love that in DMC 5 there’s like 4 or 5 different movement speeds from slow badass walking to sauntering to jogging to running to full sprint. It’s not even necessary gameplay-wise, but i love that it’s there.
Thank God for Portal 2s user created maps. I was playing a level and when a potential solution popped in my head I said...is that even possible? Sure enough it was and it was immensely satisfying!
Good video. Spiderman 2 on PS5 I think has the best traversal system I've ever seen in a video game and I've played a bunch. It's just so satisfying that I don't blame your stoner friend at all for just swinging through the city for hours on end.
I'll give you one forgotten game that had one of the most fun traversal/combat mechanics: X-Men 3 - The Last Stand. Teleporting through the stages with Nightcrawler was fun as hell.
Finally, someone else that went to Hollywood Video back in the day. I didn't have anything against Blockbuster, I just didn't get around to going there more than a couple times. My first Metroid exposure as a teenager was thanks to Hollywood Video
Sunset Overdrive? The game where almost everything is a way for you to move quicker in order to prevent you from just walking and get you used to the mechanics like Sekiro's forces you to get used to it's parry combat or else?
One game I think handles traversal very well is Ultrakill. You'll start off that game just struggling to get to grips with the frantic pace of combat and getting through each level in one piece. However, as you unlock new weapons, discover abilities, and grow more confident in your play-style, you can perform insane maneuvers in this game. From mastering skills like slam storage to send yourself insanely high in the air and rocket-riding to projectile-boosting and skimming over the surface of water, movement is critical to success in this game, especially if you want to P-Rank all of the levels. Ultrakill also has hands-down the best boss roster of any FPS I've played by miles, and, similar to FromSoft's games and Hollow Knight, mastering the game's movement is paramount to besting the tougher bosses.
Hey I know this has nothing to do with the video but do you plan on playing remnant 2 or making a video on it? I love your ranking videos and would love to see it (hope you don't already have one and I just couldn't find it)

The contrast between Spider-Man 2 and the new Suicide Squad "game" is utterly hilarious to me. The first game to really open my eyes to what good traversal could be was Ultimate Spider-Man for the PS2, with Incredible Hulk: Ultimate Destruction being a close second.
Don't apologize for the rant at the end. I'm sitting here wondering like: "Did what happened with Marvel's Avengers not teach this industry ANYTHING?!?!"

I'm really glad to hear you got to play Spider-Man 2. It's literally my favorite traversal system in gaming. It was so satisfying reaching top speed the few times I did and trying to keep it going, mixing in the web wings, you really do feel like Spider-Man, which is something they completely nailed across the entire game by the way. Great video and great list as always! :)
I think Nier Automata, Anthem, and Armored Core 6 are my favorite movement/feeling games I've ever played. Automata's movement expression just feels amazing and feels buttery smooth, sadly the game is so mind numbingly boring in terms of combat that it feels like a waste of a combat and movement system for almost no challenge. Anthem's flying just *feels* amazing. It's very fun and the combat is pretty good imo. Just moving around the world feels fun. The movement expression you could have with Interceptor feels great and skillful. AC6 just feels good. Movement feels amazing. gameplay is perfect. not much to be said tbh. Lovely feel of a game. Honorable mention for Titanfall 2 but it's difficult cause it doesn't really give me the high it used to since I've played the game for literal thousands of hours so it's difficult to say it still makes me feel as good as it once did. Also, extra note for Borderlands 3, feels smooth. Especially if you get a snowdrift.
When you have a massive open world it is a crime to not have a fun way to explore it. This is why so many games with large maps aren't fun for me. Exploring is half the game, and it isn't fun to walk/run in a straight line for a few minutes
Probably an sever underrated game by EA, that has good mobile movement for travel and fighting. Wild heart Traversing around an open world with a Zipline and also bouncing off springboards and sliding is a very fun aspect for that game. a whole video about traversal mechanics and not one mention of Dragons Dogma. A true shame (I've spent the last month putting 200 hours into the game and just wishing it had more recognition especially with Dragons Dogma 2 coming out next year. I'm just that addicted)
Sekiro and Hollow Knight have the two best traversal systems I’ve seen of all the games I’ve played. The grappling hook in Sekiro is insanely fun to use. It is very rewarding to experiment with how the grappling hook can be used to avoid certain enemies through stealth as well as which areas are better to use the grappling hook more than staying on the ground and vice versa. The way the grappling hook is used in certain boss fights is also super satisfying. Being able to grapple onto a boss at the last second to avoid an arena wide attack makes you truly feel like a ninja which is exactly what the game was going for. The progression system of Hollow Knight’s traversal is SUPER rewarding. Traversal feels extremely clunky at the start of the game due to you only being able to run and jump. This makes each movement upgrade you get (either through charms or newly unlocked abilities) feel insanely satisfying. The traversal system at the end of the game feels completely different than at the start of the game due to the vast amount of movement options available to you in the endgame. It is the perfect pacing of new movement upgrades leading up to this endgame that makes playing Hollow Knight so immensely satisfying
The last 3 can be summed up as, "The best traversal demands SOME measure of skill." Which is absolutely true. Traversal that is open, free, and stylish but effortless and overly easy is one that relies purely on novelty, and cannot maintain enjoyment throughout an entire game.
You can customize it not to. Turn off the swing assist and turn on fall damage and see how long you last before you launch yourself off a building at terminal velocity
@@ABadassDragon @ABadassDragon I know. It changes little. It only turns off assist for not touching the ground, but everything else stays on. This video explains all the issues very well: ruclips.net/video/jm02ZeK0pt8/видео.html
@@SzatanistaDzezowy i see. My apologies for the last, more agressive comment. Maybe a mod could fix this for the first game on the pc version?
Some of my personal favorite traversal methods in a 2D game comes from Shovel Knight. From the pogo stick-like moves of Shovel Knight to chaining double jumps and bomb bursts with Plague Knight to the diagonal slicing and wall running abilities of Specter Knight and even the shoulder bashing and twirling of King Knight, Shovel Knight is a masterclass in how you can take a simple traversal mechanic and iterate on it in so many interesting ways.
