Oak St. Crossing Malfunction (Conrail) June 27, 2009

- Conrail's crossing was malfunctioning...due to lightning taking out a lightning arrester. It was out since Thursday, June 25, 2009...and the batteries were going dead. Seems that everytime I call malfunctions into Conrail...the NS police (dispatch) think it's CN's problem...and send them out first. Well, I called it in initally at 3:07 PM EDT...and they didn't come out until about 9:30 to fix it. The power was back on at 9:50, and it finally was fixed. A southbound NS train came and the signals didn't activate...because of the dead batteries. NS really needs to get in gear or something could happen that they won't like.
I miss coming home everyday and watching the new train videos uploaded from this channel

Just want to let you know that Downriver Rail Productions unfortunately no longer railfans at the Ecorse, Wyandotte, & Trenton Railroad Crossings, plus as he deleted most of his Videos of the Railroad Crossings & left the ones up on here that only focuses on the Trains & not the Railroad Crossing Signals.
Nick Rink still railfans at those Railroad Crossings, as his Main Railroad Crossing that he films at is Harrison Ave. in Trenton, MI, plus he also changed his Username & now goes by Railfan Nick!
Alongside, some more Railfanners have joined in, as we now also have Caleb Belcher, Kyle Henry, G.C.R Productions, Joseph trainonthetrack, Royal King of the Rails, etc. railfanning there & whatnot!

@moonwalker5058: Actually, these are General Signals (GS) E-Bells. The have a circuit board with a speaker attached to it, generating the sound. :)
It has a mechanical flasher in that one that's stuck. The outer signals with the gates have the SSCC. This crossing doesn't operate right to begin with....
wow i have never seen the lights stuck on one side. that lightning must have hit hard. hope it got fixed
@we34w: Actually, I know which track is malfunctioning due to the way they have the crossing set up. The rear lights were off on both of CN's crossings, so I called Conrail, because that's who's crossing was messing up. :)
If the back lights were active on the outer most tracks, it would've been CN's problem?
Conrail is still technically around. They are now known as Conrail Shared Assets, which basically does CSX to NS local transfers.
Man what happened to Oak St. many things need to be fixed. 1: e-bell on gated signal is sounding weak. 2: second track needs to have it's battery replaced 3: third track needs some MAJOR REPARES 4: other gated signal has 2 burnt out lights on gate And finally, side lights on third track cantelever looked like it had some low power.
Well, all that was needed was the power to be restored in the signal case. That fixed the batteries by charging them back up....and fixed all other problems with the middle tracks. The gate lights on the other side were not burnt out...but there's a wiring issue that needs to be fixed. Also, there's that dang cantilever light that needs to be replaced.
Very interesting here. The train near 8:30 was going slow enough to stop if the engineer and conductor felt the need to, so dispatch must have given them the heads up on it to do a stop and flag/protect if needed. The conductor also would have noticed the lack of lights on his track and the stuck light on the adjacent track.
That does sound like a very serious problem with communication if it took them 6 and half hours to get someone to even look at it.

Right after the 2nd train passed, Conrail was coming in.
I believe tracks 1 & 4 belong to CN with GT I think sharing rights to use the tracks & the inside 2 belong to NS & Conrail but i'm not 100% sure. CSX I think uses the tracks too so those 4 tracks are used by multiple railroads.
Conrail still exist in MI NJ PA. they are shared asset. I have a friend who is works for Conrail.
Rumor has it the crossing is still malfunctioning 13 years later
As it still activates & deactivates from right now the Snow causing it.
Also the lights weren’t flashing on ns signals before they died because that power box is connected to both conrail and ns signals
So, could the non-flashing be from as the Southbound NS Signals have died & affected the Northbound NS Signals or could it be that the Flasher Relay was broken down? 🤔

due to the massive lightning strike on the lightning arrester
Lightning took out an arrester, knocking the AC offline, batteries went dead.
Weirdest malfunction I've ever seen!
The Lights on the East Side Inner Track weren’t flashing at all due to a broken Flasher Relay, whilst the West Side Inner Track has completely died ‘cause it ran for like way too long during the malfunction & it drained out the Battery, explaining why those Signals weren’t going, when the NS Train came by at the near end of the Video, approaching from Ford Ave., heading towards Vinewood Ave., then passing by Oak St. here with the major malfunction & heading down to Pennsylvania Rd..
Me too. Why would they remove them? That would be an FRA violation to do that.
No, GT (Grand Trunk Corporation) and Conrail still exist. Look it up.

2 of the lights are burnt out as well.
Taking a close look at the Flat Rock Gate Lights & I can see that way back then there, they were wired incorrectly. 🤔

Has that happened before or was that the only time it happened? Was there a thunder storm that caused the lights to malfunction like that, or do the lights always malfunction? Anyway, I hope it doesen't happen again.
And when 1 train comes, the gates go down on the two end crossings, right.

That is a lot of cantilevers! And how did that Harmon gate mechanism (2:27) get there?
At least that after he moved to another State, the Gate Mechanism on the West Side to what you were talking about got changed to the Safetran Gate Mechanism, when it got upgraded or so.
even tho this was posted in 09 I think NS should up their game as well. what do the bells sound like when theyre dying? I kinda wanted to know

owensri2, did you know that later, after you moved to another State, the Bells on the 3RD Track (2ND to East Side) were changed to the Electronic Bells and the Gate Mechanism on the 1ST Track (West Side) was changed to the Safetran Gate Mechanism?
Edit - Also, later on, the 2ND Track (2ND to West Side) now has the Mechanical Bells, as it's now reversed with the 3RD Track (2ND to East Side) having the Electronic Bells & the 2ND Track (2ND to West Side) having the Mechanical Bells, comparing to this Video here from back then, as before the upgrade, the 3RD Track (2ND to East Side) had the Mechanical Bells while the 2ND Track (2ND to West Side) had the Electronic Bells.

Correct i believe it used to look like ford avenue but was replaced for some reason well i dont know because i dont live in Michigan but i have train videos of trains one of the videos has a z train that goes that go 60 to 70 miles you can check that out

I'm a little confused, there are four tracks, which railroads do each belong to?
If i’m correct, the outermost tracks are owned by CN and the 2 middle tracks are owned by Norfolk Southern. NS’s signals were at fault here CN was all good.
@@313Railfan Even though way back then in that Video there, alongside the NS Signals having that problem, the Flat Rock Gated Signal also had it's Gate Lights wired incorrectly. 🤔

It still does. It doesn’t have any locomotives. CSX and NS both lease their engines to conrail.
